What is your resting heart rate?

Jump to newest

By *ostInTheSupermarket OP   Man

Central

…just tested mine for the first time in ages, 56 bpm. Very happy with that.

I do cardio at least 3 times a week though because my dad died in his mid 40s of a heart attack after not exactly living healthily, so if you don’t learn from that…

‘A normal resting heart rate for adults ranges from 60 to 100 beats per minute. Generally, a lower heart rate at rest implies more efficient heart function and better cardiovascular fitness. For example, a well-trained athlete might have a normal resting heart rate closer to 40 beats per minute’.

Mine sits around 47-50. I keep an eye on it because a rise is a surefire sign I’m getting ill or overly stressed.

A low resting heart rate can also be a cause of underlying health issues with the heart .

I have an erratic heart rate naturally but my blood pressure meds keep it low most of the time... occasionally it will shoot up right over 100+ even if sitting down/resting.

60 to 100 is normal. Anything above that should be checked out by GP.

Atrial Fibrillation could be a factor.

And it can be hard to diagnose as your heart needs to be in that abnormal rhythm for an ECG to record it. Mine is paroxysmal and it took a couple of years to get diagnosed

Bradycardia... abnormally low heartrate. Like a few on here I was worried that my heart rate drops low.

As low as 42 when asleep. Awake it's around 50. I'm 70 and not exactly slim. Non smoker, very occasional drinker.and exercise most days.

It varies between 45 and 50. The result of going to the gym and running 5 days a week. So, on the plus side, my heart will keep going until I'm 120. Sadly, my knees and hips will be fucked before I'm much older!

Win some lose some I guess.

Although, I'd rather be that than be lardy!! Ha

Well done you.

Mine fluctuates between 63-71. But I have neurodivergent stress, mental health medication and perimenopausal fluctuating hormones messing with mine.

My uncles having strokes and heart attacks in 40s and 50s and dying before retirement was my wakeup call.

My mental health takes a nose dive if I don't do some activity.

I have a personal trainer twice a month and I cycle despite hip pain, I do 10k steps, sometimes around Richmond Park and I go to the local leisure centre for weights and swim.

I also have to make sure I relax because too much exercise is overstimulating and it messes with my sensory processing, and then I get anxiety-like symptoms...which increases my heart rate and gives me insomnia.

Sobering because I'm mid-40s now.

You are fine.

for some people it is low due to high activity levels.

for some people it's low to low stress.

for some people it's low due to a health condition or genetics.

It's just one health factor/ health marker.

I know people who are physically very fit and then cancer-wise, hormonally or psychologically or neurologically, things go wrong.

"Why are you all abnormally low? Does fab attract people who think they are being healthy by having a low heart rate? What is this??? . The average of posters here will not be representative of the average resting heart rate of Fab users, or those of the population more generally. A really low heart rate is not always a positive thing.

Nope, and medication can also be a factor in people who have low heart rates"

Agree with these comments - everything should be taken in context. Mine's 62 but it varies

As a rough guide .your max heart rate should be 220 minus your age.

I once had an 'incident' at work.

Tight chest, light-headedness, tingling fingers.

Ambulance called, tested on the machine & told I was having a heart attack.

Blue light run to Manchester Royal, rushed into the cardiac unit.

Tested again, ultrasound etc to be told that not only was I not having a heart attack I'd never had one.

Then taken to another hospital for a full set of tests.

4hrs later & I was told "there's absolutely nothing wrong with you, but you do have a low resting HR of 44bpm - do you exercise?"

I said, "yes, I cycle a fair bit"

She swore & told me to eff off!

Apparently my low HR for my age fooled the diagnostic machine.

"…just tested mine for the first time in ages, 56 bpm.

How interesting, i find hard exercise relaxing, i cant sit still if i havnt tried to make my heart explode or lifted till my muscles burn.."

Nah too much adrenaline or cortisol and my body and brain starts to shut down. I'm autistic.

Does that include horizontal dancing...? "

Rare. As most men I meet over 35 can't make my heart race like that sexually.

Men often stop the stimulation because they don't want to come so my heart rate goes down.

"Why are you all abnormally low? Does fab attract people who think they are being healthy by having a low heart rate? What is this???

Fab has more athletes than the Olympic games "

Sexual athletes.

I'd be lying if I said that I didn't think that some people have an unhealthy relationship with exercise and/or sex and/or body image.

I'm constantly trying to keep mine ( exercise and sex) balanced and grounded. I don't have much of a choice any more because overdoing it or underdoing it makes me unwell physically or psychologically.

I have less body image/body performance issues.

Even though I'm BMI obese, the GP is hardly chasing me with Ozempic and diet shakes because I don't have any obesity-related conditions. If anything, they are more concerned about my mental health. Lol!

One time I ended up in crisis at home, just mentally winding myself up with no exercise and the ambulance crew came out checked my heart rate while I was sitting down and became alarmed! I just shrugged my shoulders and said my heart does that when I'm upset and distressed. They said "well we are not leaving until it goes back down." It went down in an hour. All fun and games and relative.

I checked in because I'm curious about health. I definitely didn't think mine would be particularly low because I'm not out here ramping it up every day with high-intensity cardio. Also have friends with POTS with low heart rate and that sucks for sure!

I did the usual bloke thing and didn’t read the instructions. It does say left arm palm up. I went the doctors on Wednesday and the nurse said it shouldn’t matter and she took it and it read pretty normal so she wasn’t bothered.
