" I can appreciate that the older Harleys were actually rather good bikes," Actually, they weren't all that, for their era at that time, they weren't that bad, but it's a bit like saying a 61 BSA A10 was rather a good bike. If you want 100,000 trouble free miles what you gonna buy, a new Honda or a fully restored to factory new beezer? The packs you discuss holding up 2CV's aren't bikers or even HD owners, they would be HOG members, they often passed their tests on a D1 bantam and haven't ridden since, and can't ride even before they go out in a pack on an epic 30 mile road trip to the next michelin starred eatery. Shrugs, it's a free world, and the roads are public, they are less hassle than the mum's doing the school run, fucking deliveroo cyclcists, any cunt with a caravan, urban 4x4 users, and so on.

"Hey don't dis the urban off-roaders I had many an adventure driving my old truck up and down stairwells and up car park walls and so forth, it beat green laning" Dis them, far from it, a few years ago a mate of mine had a GMC crew cab pickup, he did a deal with some dude from wales where they were going to swap wheels and tires and some cash either way, he wanted bigger wheels, the other guy wanted smaller wheels. Except, the two vehicles weren't *quite* identical, so they ended up meeting up in a multi story somewhere, parked next to each other did the deed, and the other guy drives off. At that point my mate realises that his vehicle is now 3" too high to clear the beams on the exit ramps, so they had to let all 4 tires down flat, crawl down and out at 1 mph to avoid popping them off the rims, and then wait 45 minutes outside on double yellows for the ATS guy to come and pump him up. He said when he told the story the traffic warden was laughing so hard he clear forgot to give him a ticket...

"It's the ethos innit. speaking as someone who has done hard miles on HD since the AMF/shovel days, there are three kinds of HD owner. 1/ The people who buy into the brand itself and all the associated bullshit, with themselves and the bike draped in enough branded HD paraphenalia to buy a perfectly good motorcycle. 2/ The people who own one because "anything else is less" and they genuinely believe it. 3/ The people who know that *technically* almost all of the jap yamaharley clones are superior in every way, but for whom all the drawbacks and quirks and retro engineering just suits them better The one practical advantage to HD ownership is generally speaking you can sell one for damn near what you paid for it, unless you bought it new. Having said all that, you couldn't give me an EFI HD, let alone the new 4 valve motor, looks like the twinkie is the end of the line. And I go out to ride, I'll stop for gas, not to meet people or be seen or ride in company, like wanking, it's best as a solo experience...lol The "biker" label is irellevant to make / model / size, there is a local lad who has ridden a C90 to the arctic circle and back, to iran and back, and all over europe, he's no less of a biker because of what he rides."

"Hardley Ableson - like a two-wheeled tractor, but slower.... Honestly - what it is about them??? I can appreciate that the older Harleys were actually rather good bikes, but the utter waffle that surrounds them today and the associated culture just makes me want to weep.... I see "clubs" of them shuffling around our Welsh main roads, looking mean and going so slowly that little old ladies in 2CVs are desperate to get past them. Fortunately I am the owner of a very well-used and far-travelled Dual-Sport Adventure bike with ground-away footrests, some fabulous memories and a very big smile.... " Annie, your roads are built for Blades!! x

"Isn't that a contradiction in terms, biker & Harley rider??? " It really isn't. I get the prejudice and a fair few Harley riders do us Harley owners any favours. But they are a laug, a bit like driving a classic car; they're engaging, not super-slick and need work to really hustle along. But they sound awesome, and throb rather than vibrate. I love mine, and I also ride other, sportier stuff.

"I'll stick to my trusty go anywhere transalp " I rode a Hayabusa up to a viewing point in the Pyrenees once, all loose gravel & rocks, kicking dust up. Took some pics and when I got back down two cops waiting gave me a round of applause as they were sure I was going to drop it. S

"Only two Harleys I've ever considered owning, those being a WL model or an XLCR1000. Hate to say it but generally I find there's only two bikes you usually don't get a nod back from, Harley & Goldwing riders. Due to this they are also the only two bikes I won't stop for if they are by the side of the road. I have a mate with a heritage softtail when he got it we swapped for a little ride & he took my TL1000. His parting words were "See that thing in your right hand? On Harleys its not the throttle its the volume control". I ride a Harley and I nod at everyone. I find in general whatever make of bike people are riding, the old 'biker nod' doesn't seem to get returned these days. I would stop for anyone at the side of the road if they looked like they needed help. I think you get good and bad whatever you ride.... S"

S" True I guess, but I'm really friendly & nod at everything & will continue to do so. Must admit though I have never come across either make broken down. I could lie & say its because they are reliable, but I'll be more truthful & say one is, the other rarely goes very far I did take a shine to an all black knucklehead custom once, more bobber than easyrider though. That was till I test rode it anyway, something didn't feel right, so I left it. S

"Isn't that a contradiction in terms, biker & Harley rider???" AGREED! I had a 72 sportster, furthest I ever went without something falling off was 9 miles, most notably brake pedal... Mind you it sounded like the devil himself farting in a biscuit tin...

Honda C series are the biggest selling bike in the world, or until the Chinese copied them but worse... Imho to be a real biker you have to at least have ridden one--- kudos to the arctic tho mans got balls of steel ;-)

"Can sort of understand the appeal of a Harley, but I would never go for one myself. What I really can't understand, though, is how people fall for the vastly inflated prices for such very dated and unsophisticated tech." I was exactly the same until I rode one. As for unsophisticated tech. My harley has more 'toys' than my R6 had. I used to be anti Harley but then I realised I was anti middle class banker types riding the top of the range ones. I have a, relatively, cheap sportster. I love it

"I've a question now reading this thread, I've been into bikes for many years, dt125, rxs100 gpz600 and then the original blade which I owned for 17 years till I got rid last year, I've looked at HD but the modern era and they look nice, however reading this thread it seems I'd be better going back a few years and go from there. It won't be a daily runner but more a just head off for a ride on days off. Thoughts? Mr " my boss and one of the managers where I work both bought early hd bikes and decided that they were better of with newer ones which they then purchased for more day to day riding and though no. Biker I must admit the modern machines look as stunning as the older ones especially if they got lots of chrome and a good paint job

But like 2T's they are not afraid to waggle their head but that's part of the fun Although giving my latest one 140ish at the rear tyre as opposed to the 110ish as standard may not be the smartest move I've ever had S
