Seen the news?

Absolute chaos as drones have been spotted over the airport.

The airport is closed, well the runway is.

This been going on since 9pm and police can't locate the operater/s.

They won't shoot it or them down incase of a stray bullet.

Just shoot it ffs.

I saw one for sale yesterday for £75. The box was the same size as one of those huge tellies you can get.

£75 is a decent amount of money but at the same time it's small.

Probably someone sat in their house controlling it which makes it extremely difficult to locate.

Surely the raf have something they can use but perhaps that gives the game away regarding their technology.

Just shoot it. I'm top 5 of the UK (ps4) with two games so I think im fully qualified to take that shot.

I could do it in a tank in all honesty

Anyone in their right mind knows that flying a drone over an airport could cause a plane crash, I would do the driver of said drone for attempted murder with nothing less than a prison sentence. Zero tolerance and deterrent to others.

Fly above it - drop a net on it

Fly under it and shoot it

Get Crocodile Dundee to throw a tin of beans at it

Close Gatwick until after boxing day and everyone gets Christmas off.

Send a highly trained Eagle up in the sky to fuck it up.

Get a parachuter to do something to it as they parachute past it.

Crash into it with another drone. Or have a drone off and add graphics so it's like a Street Fighter 2 game. Ready. Fight!!

My understanding is that because drones are so small they only show up on radar if they reach a certain height... so if it is bobbing up and down the it is only showing up intermittently

Saying that... if nothing is now flying in the area surely they would have signal jamming equipment

I don't suppose they could either get up close in a chopper and use a shotgun or simply get hold of another drone and crash it into the first one?

So if some group of silly buggers really want to mess up the UK all they need to do is station themselves around some dozen UK major airports with a couple of drones and bingo air travel UK shutdown.

You just couldn't make it up that it takes this long to get rid of a radio-controlled drone.

Out in war zones important (usually VIP type people) convoys have mobile Jammers on board to disrupt signals to the mobile phone triggers on IEDs etc.

Jamming the frequency once this drone is airborne should be a piece of cake. Once the operator can't control it then taking it down should require minimal effort.

They are probably all still in a meeting trying to find the elf and safety sheet related to dealing with drones.

It was only a matter of time before a drone operator tried some stupid stunt like this, hopefully it becomes law that all drones must be registered at purchase.

There was a picture of a plane on linkedin recently that had a collision with a drone on landing, the radome (nosecone) was well and truly knackered.

All you need is a frequency generator transmitting at 2.4ghz and 5.8ghz frequency. As long as the power output is greater than the drone control transmitter it will block both the band and the sidebands and effectively 'Jam' the drones receiver. They are directional so can be aimed and have a range of 1 mile or greater.

Things like this will mean all drones will only be sold to license holders.

They will be strictly regulated and controlled only to be used at organised events or places where they cannot interfere with other forms of traffic.

Of course not everyone will abide by the law but this will now be introduced in parliament I feel as a matter of urgency and s new law passed.

Sadly those who use drones respectfully and carefully will suffer.

There are several people I know who use them properly and the photos they take and share of the surrounding area are amazing but they do need to be regulated in some way now.

Or as someone said a signal jammer, they used to do this to the model aircraft enthusiasts who used to fly around the old airport in Bristol with old AM cb’s

Guess 1: Some troublemaking kid used the drone to disrupt flights at the airport just for a laugh.

Guess 2: Some asshole adult who hates the service at the airport.

I’ve not looked in to it but these cicilian drones will have an absolute max battery life of 40mins or so. Either there are heaps of them going up one after the other or they’re landing somewhere, getting new batteries and launching again. Clearly it’s NOT this easy but I’m wondering why they’re not being followed?

I first thought that shooting it would be the best solution, but I agree with the fact that a high powered stray bullit would be a risk.

Taking out the drone also reduces the opportunity to trace whoever is operating it. There is a risk that they have other drones and could put that up as soon as flights are resumed.

I would have preferred a media blackout on the story as no doubt there will soon be copy cat nut cases doing the same at other airports

Over 100.000 people have been affected. Ain’t no blackout keeping that from making the rounds especially with social media.

You may be right about the copycats though. The Environmentalists will be watching closely if they don’t already have a part. There will be no need for them to get on the tarmac anymore.

According to reports, it's industrial drones, which possibly rules out some mischevious kid.

The problem with shooting them/firing a net over them, is where will they fall? A motorway/school/shopping arcade.

The armed forces have a number of things that could be used but they can't step in without parliament approving such a tasking. They could jam the signal which would stop the problem a better use of their skills would be to DF (direction finding) the drone operators position by triangulating the signals location. Why that hasn't been done already is beyond me though.

Why is she stuck in Lapland? All other planes have been diverted to other airports... Southend has been very busy today.

The drones are not the everyday ones that kids may use, they are specialist ones, the jamming of the frequency will only allow a return to base.... follow the damn thing and there’s your operator!

My op says I saw one yesterday in a massive box for just £75.

More of a toy but it's original price was £500 I think.

You don't need to spend the same amount on what a car costs to cause this much trouble for a lot of people

There are a lot of options out there and some big companies selling defensive systems to airports in the US. Options include trained brids of prey, net launchers and even emp devices designed to fry the onboard electronics. I guess a lot of UK airports are scrambling over themselves now to get something in place. Unless it's a drone the size of a small bomber any explosives on board are just going to make a loud bang in mid air.

A shotgun only has a maximum effective range of about 40 meters using buckshot. I'll bet that the drone operator knows that."

Use a 10 gauge shotgun with the right cartridge and the effective range is somewhere between 70 and 80 metres and powerful enough to bring down a fair sized goose at that range so should knock down a drone easily.

As a drone owner I feel very sorry for the poor people who have had their travel plans disrupted and very angry at the cunt(s) who have caused it.

A couple of Christmases ago I bought myself the DJI Mavic Pro.

Thousands of people in the UK bought them as they record high quality, stabilised 4K video and are amazing technology and safety features. They record their takeoff position with GPS and take a downward photo so that hitting the ‘return to home’ button makes them fly back land within a few inches of where they took off. Max speed 40pmh, max range of several miles, though any obstructions blocking the signal will significantly reduce that. Battery time about 20 minutes.

Takes seconds to land, swap the battery and take off again. They were about £1100 at the time.

I’ve used mine to supplement my home videos with some spectacular aerial shots (of my car, house, pond, wild flower patch).

I’ve been careful to fly legally. Operator error is the usual reason they crash. 2017 remembrance day I was in the crowd outside of Redditch church when I heard and then saw a Mavic flying high overhead. Definitely illegal. Was nothing anyone could have done at the time.

With regard to Gatwick, I’m surprised that this hasn’t happened before. It’s easy to do it and environmental campaigners would easily have the cash and coordination to fly multiple drones. Could take off in a hotel room, fly it through a patio window and control it from there. Though it would be loud enough for other guests to hear.

Could drive around and take off from any 2 metre clear patch of land. Or even the car roof.

Someone suggested blocking the wifi frequencies. The drones use a different frequency. If the make of drone is known, then they could potentially intercept the signal and interrupt it and even find the transmitter location, but that would require some some sophisticated equipment and know-how which would take significant effort, time and money to organise.

Shooting them down is problematic because they are relatively small, move fast and bullets landing in a city are potentially lethal.

Flying near with a helicopter would be dangerous because a drone could take out a tail rotor.

Firing nets from the ground feels like a ridiculous idea. Drone would be too high, small and fast.

Training eagles to take them out is a ridiculous idea because the propeller blades could kill the bird and this isn’t Lord of the Rings.

I honestly don’t know what the solution is but they need to do something to stop it happening again.

Speaking for myself and probably for other responsible drone owners, I hope they catch the scumbags responsible and give them serious jail time. They don’t represent the vast majority of the drone flying community. I hope there isn’t backlash against all drone flying or fliers and I hope they don’t tighten the already strict laws.

Absolute chaos as drones have been spotted over the airport.

The airport is closed, well the runway is.

This been going on since 9pm and police can't locate the operater/s.

They won't shoot it or them down incase of a stray bullet.

Just shoot it ffs.

I saw one for sale yesterday for £75. The box was the same size as one of those huge tellies you can get.

£75 is a decent amount of money but at the same time it's small.

Absolute chaos!

There are already training programmes in place in the UK and in a few global countries to train Eagles & other Birds of Prey to hunt drones and return them to authorities.

It’s a genuine risk. You can’t just shoot bullets willy billy into the sky, they come down again. There’s a story just today of a guy sitting at a family meal in Miami, outdoors and he was struck in his chest by a stray bullet fired from god knows where. Nobody heard a gun shot so it came from mikes away. Probably some idiot firing into the sky for no apparent reason.

Update this morning. Pice have arrested a man and woman. I just hope they were the operators and not copycat operators or whatever.

The police need to hold the power here and be in control, not the criminal (bit obvious I suppose) but if the operator decides to stop, they still hold the power.

I'm astounded nobody came up with using an emp gun (electro magnetic pulse).

No stray bullets to worry about and due to the weight issues involved in drone design even a relatively low power device would fry the drones electrics easily.

It does seem odd that the second busiest airport should just shut down over this . How do you think other countries manage to keep theirs open ?

I’m pretty sure a marksman would be capable of hitting it , or use another drone to catch the rogue drone ?

You can't really shoot them down, an airport is a huge place and these things move very fast and very unpredictably, so you're always going to be shooting from quite far with a powerful round.

That means it's going to come in horizontal into populated areas and still be lethal.

Also "'drone spotted, great let's jump in the van and hope it's still there when we've driven the 5 miniutes it takes to get there"

No one really has a good solution for these issues yet, the closest is other drones with nets hanging or crashing into them.

But if yours is just a bit slower then you can't do anything really.

And the jamming the signals is possible (see Iran stealing the USA drone that way) but while it's feasible to wipe out all GPS and radio in an unpopulated dessert , in Gatwick? Not really possible without making the situation 1000's of times worse.

Waiting and looking for the operator is pretty much the best of a bad bunch of options.

The typical toy drone isnt going to really bother a plane but if somones doing it deliberately then whos to say he hasn't based the frame around a solid metal bar that will shatter everything in an engine?

They keep thiers open the same way we have, untill now no one has been stupid enough to do this.

But remeber an airport is massive so once somone sights it its going to take miniutes for your marksman or other drone to get there. By which point its fucked off lol

it's a lightweight device requiring no special training. Pretty much any of the airport staff could be issued one and use it. And even if it only got a 10% chance of a hit per pop up, that's still 10% better than the 0% they currently have.

Well the massive conventional explosions that is used to generate the EMP by rapidly forcing the coil through a field will require some training to use....You know cause it's a massive bomb.

Emp guns aren't a thing emp devices are but they are weapons of war They're a big bomb that also produces a lot of em radiation.

But if they were a thing people firing them around an airport filled with critical very sensitive electronic equipment wouldn't be very good.
