I got ID,d in asda the other day, the woman dead arse looked me up and down and asked how old I was. I laughed thinking she was joking but she tutted and asked again, I answered shocked that she was serious and she gasped and exclaimed "now way! You don't look that old!" I was both flattered and offended at the same time. Is 45 old? And how old do I actually look then?

I think I look my age but then again I bump into to old school friends of the same age regularly and am quite shocked at how old they look. I am lucky not to have lines around my eyes and a Smooth forehead (all naturally with no botox) but then again I stay out of the sun and never smoked so I guess that helps.

I think you're right and realistic which isnt to say you don't look great. I think the addition of 'for your age' to any compliment negates the compliment altogether

I have been surprised a couple of times when people have told ne how old they are but mostly I'm not. Clothes, hair and general attitude to life can give a more youthful or older impression but hands, chest and neck are dead giveaways.

Never growing out of the teenage goth phase means I've always avoided sunlight and smiling, so my skin has probably seen less damage over the years.

In my recent visits to the club - at least three people said I look younger than my age. I never expected such compliments. I guess the reason could be related to me not into heavy or frequent drinking, not smoking, except when I am in Europe, eat lots of veggies - two three times trekking in summer also helps.

He's 99 as I don't doubt many of you are tired if hearing lol but he honestly thinks he looks younger, he's been blessed with excellent genetics and looked at least 10 to 20 years younger most of his adult life after 30. I won't disillusion him but he looks very, very old and nobody is surprised when he tells them how old he is but he thinks he looks about 60

Why is looking your age seen as such a bad thing? People do look their age. It doesn't mean that someone is unattractive, it's not an insult. A person isn't attractive despite their age or beautiful because they don't look their age.

I'm probably the last person to ask how old I think someone is - I tend to go too close to their actual age, rather than the faux flattery.

Exactly! People so often equate beauty or attraction with youth and it's not surprising given that we're bombarded with media telling us to hide any signs of age or to turn the clock back.

Whilst I'm not a huge fan of her I think Vanessa Feltz is an example of someone who embraces the age she is without apology or concealment

I am often told that I look quite a lot younger but to be fair that is always when I have ‘put my face on’! Fortunately no one has to see me without makeup except me looking in the mirror in the morning and I have got used to the sight. Even without makeup I think that I look a little younger than my age, even if it’s not a very pretty sight.
