Clue is in the name....roundabout, it's round and you drive around it.

Island is for separating traffic and provides a safe place for pedestrians to stand. Traffic does not drive around it, and it's more oblong than a round shape so no. It's nowhere near to being a roundabout

The round mounds at intersections of roads are called roundabouts or mini roundabouts. Vehicles go around them to turn left, go straight, turn right, or on dual carriageways to go back the way you came from.

An Island is in a main road in them middle of traffic, allowing people to cross the road.

If the only access onto the encircling road is via a give way or stop sign.....It's a roundabout. If any part forms part of an ongoing carriageway.....it's an island.

If there are pirates burying treasure it's also an island.

Anything built up on a road, where that be crossing points, round abouts, dividers etc, are all classed as islands.

For example a pianted round about isnt, one with curbs is.

Thats what ive been told on a number of CPC Courses, because apparently im a professional driver.

I know that a roundabout is a circular construction placed where several roads meet which allows traffice to drive around it and locate the exit they need.

Ive always understood an ISLAND to be a place of refuge or a landing where pedestrians can stand when they are waiting to cross or they are where the traffic lights are ....... most times they have kerbstones around them and are paved or tarmaced... but the thing that cars drive around see that ? AROUND is a roundabout!

The Maldives is a chain of islands.

British roads - especially those in that shithole Milton Keynes have roundabouts.

The original name was gyratory circus or simply circular island.

In engineering terms the raised central area is an island. Traffic island is the broad term referring to any raised or painted area within a roadway used to guide traffic, provide pedestrian refuge, or separate lanes.

I would also add that many have been named either officially or locally target include the name island.

The Magic Roundabout in Swindon was originally called "County Islands"

And there are loads of famous named islands across the UK:

Spitfire Island, Birmingham

Haydock Island, Merseyside

Stonebridge Island, Warwickshire

Longbridge Island, Birmingham

And probably more...

Living in a city that is famed for its roundabouts having (according to Google) 130+ roundabouts

The reason is say the number is because most of them “roundabouts have islands separating the 2 carriage ways

Islands are put in place usually as traffic calming measures for junctions or crossings for instance

The roundabout was designed as a cheaper alternative to traffic lights that need electric feed and maintenance roundabouts are for vehicles to change direction easier where alternative roads meet

The Highway Code will clear up your dispute quite easily
