If I got the warning, I would climb up on the roof, face the direction of the blast, shut my eyes, spread my arms wide and wait for the sweet relief of death. I’d probably get my cock out too..... have a quick last wank.

Better not be a false alarm. That would be awkward

23rd April (I think) a test emergency alert is being sent to all mobile phones. It's an early warning for floods, forest fires, nuclear attack and lost kittens. I might have fibbed about some of it

"People seem to think they are being edgey by turning of the notifications "

The way I look at this is that the govt must have access to our phones via our networks to send the notification in the first place. Therefore turning the notification off means nothing except you won't hear the test. If there's a sinister agenda it's already in place.

It's a symptom of social programming. It's a new convention that allows people who might otherwise feel powerless, disconnected and disenfranchised by their mundane existence to feel they have some kind of special knowledge, source or insight that 'others' lack. The more disenfranchised they are by their place in society the more they need that sort of crutch to lean upon to re-elevate their self esteem.

It's similar in some ways to how the early spike of the Dunning Kruger effect manifests. By labelling those others with pejorative catch phrases like 'sheeple' (or other such prescribed labels) they suddenly feel empowered as though they have the kind of insight they in fact lack.

It's actually become quite a reliable conspiracy theorist signpost in this respect in the absence of an actual tinfoil hat.

Yeah, it's not like Britain is lagging behind the rest of Europe with a system like this, we have weather warnings often that this could be ideal for and it could also be implemented in the case of any natural disasters but let's not let the truth get in the way of your conspiracy theory or feelings of superiority

Switching off the notification will do just that, it won't prevent access to your phone, you'll simply receive no notification *shrugs*

From what I've read, this notification is no more than the sound of the low battery warning, or your generic message tone, and so I don't see anyone panicking over that.

Eloquently and accurately put.

An emergency signal, inthis case a test, gets sent to your phone to warn of an impending emergency event.

And the problem with that is...........what exactly?

The tests happen regularly near where I live. It's old news.

Just a thought for those who think it is used to track and spy on the public, if they have it on your phone to track you would they tell you? As they have do you think that they could be checking who disables it and use that information to target who to track. By turning it off you could be play into their hands. Just to keep you safe I have designed a tin foil hat that will fit on any mobile phone and can sell you one for just £200 to keep you safe.

It's interesting reading different people's reaction to the prospect of an alert. It's those with secret phones that ought to be concerned, in particular those subjected to domestic violence who have an emergency phone. Having an alert going off could put them in danger.

I just hope they know to turn their phone off for that time period.

Not necessarily… each network has a record of numbers on its system. All the government has to do it supply them with the appropriate code/message and allow them to broadcast or alternatively they have access and transmit direct, doesn’t mean the government have your details, phone numbers etc…

No they can't. They can only make educated guesses.

"

Even that they can't really do reliably.

To say California will have an earthquake in 2023, that will happen just because of its location. But they can't guess when or the magnitude. Especially in places less likely to have an earthquake.

What the warning system can do is give a warning to areas outside the epicentre that more may be coming, or in the case of the UK if we get a large enough earthquake (regardless of how unlikely) that a reasonable tsunami would be incoming.

Regardless of the likelihood of needing it, every country should have a warning system in place. Be it invasion, natural disaster, terrorist etc. The more people able to be warned sooner, the better.

I live how people believe they are so important that the government gives a shit about what you do during your day to day life.

- Who analyses this big data

- what super computer are they using

- What are they looking for

- Who are they trying to correlate you with

The first thing the police/MI5/FBI/any global intelligence network do when you commit a crime is take your phone and laptop to look for data. A process which takes hours or days. They do this because they can't access 8billion devices remotely, let alone interpret any fit even if they could

Yes they can ping and intercept, but this is very, very specific

Just think outside the box a little bit. No one gives a shit about what you do day to day

Manchester (she/her)

"I live how people believe they are so important that the government gives a shit about what you do during your day to day life.

No one gives a shit about what you do day to day "

I think the creep of big data/ big tech is insidious and dangerous - but the focus on stuff like this is bloody silly. Worry more about your phone and places like Googtwaterbook

Warks / Northants Border

Just double checked on the Government website. Two of the example reasons for receiving these emergency alerts are;

Extreme Weather

Severe Flooding

Out of interest, has anyone affected by either these this week, received the notification?

It actually monitors everything you do. Your device was always able to do this when you've given permission and each time you are without knowing

Right down to your movements by each and every mast also whether it's internet or signal for calls

You were never alone

Well if this is true:

Hello powerful government monitoring me,can you please arrange for me to win the lottery this week and make my back better so I can get out of the house before I go totally insane.

Thanks

I'm not important or interesting enough for the government to spend time monitoring.

Though,I am curious about whether anyone received the alarm notification?

It's very true

It's how in the past have caught criminals as pin pointing precisely where each was when they were communicating with each other when they were arrested and device checked via its data which provided solid evidence to convict them was like a confession

I didn't on either of my devices so I must be one of those chosen ones or less important
