Northampton Somewhere

Hi ya Having a day out in London soon with my 17 tear old daughter.

We've a few things planned. Lunch at the Shard, a wander round Borough Market, she wants to go to a charity shop in Camden, see the Christmas lights at Oxford Street.

Anything else that might be good?

Oooh can't offer any insight but I will be following with interest.

My son moves to London in January and will be working in Covent Garden, he tells me it's beautiful so I can't wait to explore London x

Nice. I like Covent Garden. There used to be an opera singer who sang at the bottom of a stairwell in the middle bit. She was amazing

What does she like doing, OP?

If it's just a day, you're already packing quite a lot in.

But if you're on Oxford Street, wander over to Carnaby Street as its Christmas lights are normally great too, and Liberty is a really special shop for a mooch.

North Bucks

Pimlico and Knightsbridge for the charity shops. Couple of people from my office go down all the time on a charity shop safari.

I love wandering around London.

There was an opera singer a few weeks ago when I was there. I think it’s a regular thing. He was incredible x

NW London

If you've only got one day, your current itinerary should be enough. People underestimate just how big London is and how spread apart places are.

__

I would definitely recommend to visitors taking a boat trip down the Thames, it's cheapest to do this on the Uberboat as it's part of the public transport network (and they have a bar on board).

I'd also recommend a walk down the Southbank between Southwark Cathedral and Tower Bridge.

__

For observation decks, I think the Skygarden at the Walkie Talkie building is free of charge (you need to book ahead though) and you get almost as impressive view as you would from Shard.

___

Food wise, carnivores would like Blacklock or Flat Iron for reasonably priced steak and chops and roasts. Bodeans or Red Dog Saloon are good for American style BBQ

That’s already a lot to pack into one one day. South bank to Camden & city is a bit of travel

You could go to a code y club at Covent Garden or Leicester Square in the evening

Grantham

Take the Clipper down to Greenwich, and a brisk walk upto the Observatory. Great views from up there.

Then the Clipper back to London Bridge for the Shard and Borough Market.

I think it'll take you all day just to do the things you have planned.

But if you want something fun to do and make someone's day. Listen out for American tourists, if you can, make an excuse to say "Excuse me love" or "Sorry love". Their reactions are priceless.

You've probably got enough there, shard/Borough Market, Camden and Oxford Street aren't particularly close to each other, so you've potentially already filled a day, its easy to spend a few hours in Camden alone

120 fenchurch steet is worth going to. Not quite as high up as the sky garden but it's free and you don't need tickets.

Ride a proper Routemaster, Jago Hazard has done a YT video on the new service. Not on the Oystercard sytem.

Regent's canal might be worth looking at, if that floats your boats. Google Earth is great for this.

Ugly Dumpling for …umm dumplings, in Carnaby is well worth it , might need to book.

Similarly, if you can get into Cahoots (off Carnaby at) that’s a great little place for an evening too

If you're going to Oxford Street then St Christopher's Place, a little thoroughfare between Oxford Street and Wigmore Street, always has really pretty lights at Christmas. Bond Street has nice lights too, probably nicer than Oxford Street tbh. Stella McCartney's shop in Old Bond Street usually has brilliant lights.

It's a bit out of your way, but the Churchill Arms pub in Old Church Street, just off Kensington High Street, is always really beautifully decorated at Christmas.

Remember the streets could get packed. Keep an eye on your bags. Roma gyppos abound in the West End. They are beggars, pickpockets and con artists. Any of them give you a rose don't take it, they'll want money for it.

You've already got a great day out planned by the sound of it. Have fun.

There are no charity shops in Camden market, there are some in Camden High Street but there are not that great. There are second hand shops in the market but they are really expensive.

Covent Garden is beautiful at Christmas time and closer to Oxford street than Camden is, no charity shops either though (these tend to be in less central locations)

Kensington and Chelsea are supposed to be good for charity shops as they are pretty affluent areas!

There's a fair few vintage shops around Camden/West End/Shoreditch etc that would be worth a look.

If you want to wet your whistle after Borough Market The George pub in a court yard almost opposite is worth a visit, it dates back to the 17th century. Google will obviously give you it's precise location.
