Yes I worked there for 8 yrs and finished 9 years ago.

Sadly I can't see the electric arc furnaces ever being built.

The Indians certainly done us over again.

I think you're bang on, they'll scarper with all that money and the government will just shrug their shoulders

My dad was a steel worker. I remember the kids Christmas parties! They were stopped a long time ago though

I really feel for those steel workers. I think TATA won’t ever build the electric furnace the time frame seems too long. By then it’ll be twice the price, not cost effective and will be shelved and we will be buying imported steel from overseas.

I really hope that doesn’t happen but TATA have been trying to dispose of Port Talbot steel works out the back door for years and this will be their opportunity to do so.

Meanwhile the environmentalists are seeing it as a win not thinking of the families who will be facing redundancy or the fact that the green alternative is 4-5 years from happening!

Had that been a banking group, it would have been saved!

A sad day for South Wales

I worked there for a few years, the Indians will close it in the next two years, its got nothing to do with being green it's all to do with the price of energy in Britain they hating paying top dollar for anything we used to roll 600 coil a shift on the hot mill where are they going to get that amount of coils from now? I feel sorry for the youngsters with young children and mortgages, not just a sad day for Port Talbot but for the whole of South Wales 😢

It’s absolutely devastating for the town the people that work there & also uncertain times for other business in the surrounding areas this will have a knock on effect for everyone

That’s the thing isn’t it ? How many pair of gloves, of bacon rolls, of nuts and bolts, of stationary , etc etc does the steelworks support the sale of ? The knock on effect is massive. And so predictably short sighted. It’s not called Ta-Ta for nothing .

W Midlands & N Wales

Devastating, but inevitable.

Overseas investment looks great initially, but the end journey will always be that it's cheaper/ easier elsewhere for multiple reasons - cheaper labour, less unionised workforce, less stringent environmental legislation etc.... The classic argument of quality can soon be learned/ transposed as working practices are reviewed...m

So in the short term, the government can be held to ransom for concessions, funding etc, but at some point that dries up and the whole facility will be shut and moved somewhere else.

Inevitable and tragic

Happened for decades all over the world in lots of first world countries.

Weston super mare

Tata took all the government ( taxpayer) handouts tax breaks etc etc gained the expertise then walked away laughing. As happened with much of the industry in the UK . America has gone the same route exporting jobs and giving away money and technology. The same pattern with mass unchecked immigration. To keep wages down for the benefit of the global power brokers , multinational companies that actually decide what happens to us . Tell me that our elected politicians are here to benefit us and I’ll call you a liar or completely deluded .

You are completely right and the politicians just say what can we do stop giving them money and nationalise the steel industry you could rebuild those two blast furnaces with the 500 million they gave Tata, who by the way have just built the biggest blast furnace in the world in India, green steel my arse
