"Im doing dry january for fisrt time need encouragement "

The good thing and bad thing about giving up alcohol is you have time on your hands.

Make some plans on how you're going to fill that time. If you sit in the same place at the same time without a drink in your hand, you're gonna feel like you're missing out.

Do something good with your sober time. Read a book, go for a walk, chat to a mate, cook a meal...

Good luck.

Well done everyone, I started last year and I’m still going. Dont expect to feel much different after 1 month. I struggled early doors because I thought giving up for month would reverse years of abusing my body, also you will have more time to think about your emotional past and believe me you will

Keep going g everyone

Yes massively so much so that I’ve been bulking for 4 months. I used to gym a lot but never saw any gains and I was going for years. After about 6 months I’d lost loads. It’s the face that you notice it more. I’ve done 1st sober wedding, 40th birthday, all inclusive holiday and it does get easier to say no…just my experience but I feel a million times better

Don't see the point.

If you want to cut down booze, cut it down over the year or years.

Why struggle for a full month to rip back into it the next month.

If its for some kind of charity fundraiser, go for it.

Because it can be a way for people to gently try sobriety.

It's how I started and I've been sober for years now.

Not every way is for everyone, but don't knock it just cos it's not for you.

Well done.

But I wouldn't say a dry January is a gentle way to sort out drinking problems but if it works, it works.

I see it a bit like these crash diets.

But, I don't have a drink problem so its difficult to make a decision what road would be best for me.

But well done for being sober for so long.

I never saw the point until I read this thread. Personally I don't drink too often, and probably only have more than a couple 3-4 times a year.

However for those who have made it a regular social, or mental crutch. I can see how a month of clarity can lead to some positive self reflection and physical benefits.

You can do it 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻

The thing is as well the more you drink the more yiu can drink with out feeling d*unk. So it is a good way to rest that and then try to drink less.

Big hi five to anyone trying it. Government guidelines are 14 units per week for a healthy amount of alcohol and many people dont realise how much harm it does your body. 20 years of sobriety here and loving it - apart from always being the dedicated driver 😂

People. Be strong, other drinkers will try to bring you back into it. Notice we don’t have a cocaine thread, or a thread. It’s the most socially acceptable drug and the one that causes the most widespread damage. I’m a huge drinker, and a fucking ledge in a three pint buzz, but I am trying to kick the habit for good by doing this Jan and seeing if I make it through Feb and so on.

"How do you sleep if not drinking alcohol.

Your body needs to learn how to sleep naturally.

Drinking knocks the brain out, in a similar way to anaesthesia.

Good sleep hygiene and good bedtime habits will help.

Sober sleep is peaceful and restorative, so I hope you get to experience it.

Where did i say it should be increased. I am saying NOT to lower it. I know loads of people who have 2 or 3 drinks and then drive home. The ones who have 3 are big blokes.

Yes its cheaper in supermarkets but people go for the draught beers as they mostly taste better than out of a can.

They and i won't bother if one drink now puts you over. May as well drink at home.

I realise that some people can be over on 2 drinks depending what theyve drank. Shame there aren't machines in pubs to test whether you're over the limit or not.

it’s good to make the dry Jan work but if you fall off it keep trying you can do a week a month and increase to two weeks and so on , Government units in the 70s ! The royal college of psychiatrists uk said in 1979 that the upper limits was about 56 units a week? Always take in to consideration that all our bodies are different and we all have different capacities , my father could drink a litre of whiskey a night and didn’t take a flinch out of him and I could drink two glasses and a massive headache lol , So find out what suits your body and that could be orange juice

Likewise - eight days in now and probably saved an amount running into three figures; that's partly because the bus trip in and out of town would add almost the cost of a pint to every pub visit; the local a few yards down the road is not attractive so calls to support it are in vain, while tourists will keep those in town going.

Eight days now and staying strong. Another poster mentioned cheese which is definitely something else that needs cutting out/down.

Primarily embarked on Dry January as I looked down the other day and couldn't see my nob, only my tummy. A wake up call. Alcohol has also been a go to crutch with my bipolar for years, and not a healthy one.

As for supporting local pubs....they all know me by name and I don't even need to say what I'm having. I'll be popping in for a and some grub to test my willpower.

Yikes Bipolar and alcohol as a crutch. I have BPD and drink but I avoid using it as a crutch. My dad was an alcoholic growing up...it wasn't great. I'm ok with Dry January, I've never been a heavy drinker because of mostly childhood flashbacks and a few adult high-risk behaviour flashbacks too while d*unk.

Yeah, it's not a great mix, but I've developed a high tolerance for it, which in itself is a sign of over indulgence. My dad was also an alcoholic, and also had bipolar. Thankfully, unlike him I've avoided being sectioned!

Amusingly my mother is now encouraging me to have a few drinks this weekend as apparently it's good for me...some folks have very odd views.

Popped into the pub yesterday to avoid the rain and to warm up and had a jolly nice lemonade and orange juice

"While I applaud anyone trying to complete Dry January, can I please ask you to still visit and support your local, even buying soft drinks will help them through a particularly challenging month

This is true. This govt is doing its best to close as many pubs as possible. Reducing the dd limit will only hurt the pub trade.

So are you saying it should be increased to try and save the pub industry.

I don't have a pub within walking distance. But it's supermarkets giving cheep alternative that is part of the problem.

For me the limit is OK but the message should be don't drink and drive not, you can have a bit but not to much.

"

You dint, but if a drink is a pint at over 2 units. Witch at 3.6% Apb it is then 2 pints is over twice the limit and this is the problem.

As for 3 pints well don't drive easy.

If there was a machine in a pub you might blow clear but as it gets in to your system you could the me over the limit later on.

Easy just don't consume alcohol and drive.

I'm currently unhappy with my body because I drink too much.

It's very rare I bother to meet anyone anyway.

Same here, I was getting home and relaxing with 1/2 beers then onto the whiskey, a litre bottle would last maybe two days maybe 3, I haven’t had a drop since the start off January, at first it was so hard to get to sleep, but after a few days I seem to be ok, think I’m knocking the whiskey on the head altogether, and yes I’ve lost a little weight thank god , good luck to you all trying

I’m doing dry January, did it last year too 👍🏻 it’s so hard on a Friday and Saturday night, especially when friends try to tempt you 😒 but the next morning when you’ve resisted and wake up fresh and ready to seize the day make it worth it ☺️

Staying off the booze for a while, not sure how long.

We don't drink if we're working in the morning, so it was only fri/sat nights but as my partner was injured last spring we couldn't do too much so just drank.

I want to do more this year, want to ride my bikes more, so that means staying sober.

Plan is to get used to not drinking so that when the weather turns warmer it'll be a habit.

Very well done for giving sober a go. I hope you love the clear, fresh feeling it gives you.

I don't plan on complete sobriety, rather not drinking for the sake of drinking.

I'll have a beer or wine when I go out but I'm stopping the home drinking.

It is, creeps up on you very easily.

I've never d*unk on a work night, but found I'd become the classic weekend binge drinker whilst my tolerance for alcohol was dropping.

Don't want to spend my weekends hungover & not be able to ride the bikes I've spent an indecent amount of money on.

Plus, I've a few outfits I've my eye on & want to fit in them!

Personally an easy one for me.

I don't drink at home, especially not if I'm in my own, and I don't go out anywhere.

I went through the COVID lockdowns without touching a drop lol

I know it's not always as easy as that for some people though

Two-thirds of the month down and still 'dry', despite there being alcohol in the house and being out for a meal during the week where others' dry January came to a halt. And I haven't touched the 'zero alcohol' either, as I feel that would be a cheat.

After this the plan will be to stay dry for half the week, which will have the added benefit of continued moneysaving.

I pretty much stopped drinking just by not having alcohol in the house. When I separated I didn’t want to be that guy who d*unk alone. No alcohol, no temptation.

My tolerance has fallen through the floor and even a pint gives me a headache in the morning. Just the thought of the headache now stops me from really wanting a drink. I don’t miss it anymore.

Being painfully hungover on New Year's Day definitely influenced my decision.

So far it's been ok. I've had the occasional 0.05% alcohol free beer so I guess I'm technically cheating. 👀

Although is it cheating when I substitute wine with an alcohol free equivalent? The placebo effect. 😋

This what I've done.

I drank on Jan 1st as I was staying with friends.

Jan 10th as it was my 30th birthday.

Friday night just gone, 3 cocktails in cans (this was a moment of weakness and I just wanted a drink)

And Saturday night just gone as I went out to a club, nailed a whole bottle of Cava though 😬

But I've stopped drinking 4+ cans of Stella/Guinness every night.

Yeah been for a couple of zero's with mates after tennis but.......... the local next to the club is nearly always closed so having to go to next nearest. Sad because I think it is on verge of closing. Another one is about to bite the dust I fear, even though for past 20 years I have frequented it many a time with friends.

Great contribution, thanks for that. The holier than thou attitude of some folks is very odd. What exactly do you think the point of dry January is? I've been diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder and a rare blood disorder called Hughes Syndrome in the last year or so as well as having Bipolar disorder and an as yet undiagnosed neurological condition. I've had a look at my life, perhaps you could tell me why me choosing to give up alcohol for a month is an issue, and why the arrogant/sneering attitude is required?

With ongoing health issues should an adult really need to be encouraged by some fad to give up alcohol?

Intimating that one shouldn’t need the crutch of alcohol to get through a month isn’t sneering it’s a grown up fact.

Alcohol is a wicked drug that ruins lives.

But defend it if you must.

Alcohol is like a way of life for lots of people if it was not then the UK "Pub" would not be at the center of so much publicity as so meny have closed and lots more will close.

Is it the same to meet friends in a pub for a cup of tea, as it is for a pint or 2.

Personally I don't think so if I'm meeting mates it's normally for a pint will more people become isolated the more pubs close.
