Anyone else feeling side effects of taking PREP

light headed, and feeling sick after taking event Prep. On my 4th tablet today.

Does it get better once the body is accustomed to it?

Both are well documented side effects with PREP. Lightheadedness is normally expected to settle down after a few weeks but when using event based dosing it is possible that your body won't adapt so well. Generally taking it after a meal helps with gasto-disruptive issues.

Why are you taking 4 tablets in one day though?

Normal dose is two before sex

I've taken it for many years and not had any side effects. We're all going to respond uniquely to any medication. I'd recommend discussing your side effects with your prescriber, so that they can investigate, if appropriate.

Certainly it's essential that you stick to exact dosing, so that you maintain safety and don't inflict potential harm in any ways.

Haven’t taken 4 tablets in one day, took 2 late afternoon before evening meet, then took 1 tablet each day for the following 2 days. Hope that clarifies.

I used to take if but I wanted to talk about the likelihood of long term kidney damage, especially as being a type 1 diabetic can lead to kidney damage anyway. No one could have that conversation with me and acted like I was asking a ridiculous question (is it ridiculous? I really didn’t think it was) so I stopped taking it

Those are common initial side effects, I felt hot/flushed and a bit sick for the first week although I did an initial 7 day build up/lead in dose.

Better taking it than not!!

Can I just add 2 tablets taken from 2 hrs to 24 hours before sex ,then 1 tablet 24 hours after the first 2 then another 1 taken another 24 hours later. No more than 7 Tablets per week.

That's poor that you didn't get someone to be able to discuss it with you. I discuss this at length with the clinic Doctors who prescribe it and monitor me

It's not incorrect to use the word that way and it is widely accepted and understood.

Technically,nauseated is more the correct way.

No need to be petty really as it is not wrong.

No it's not. B4 the first time taking it they said after a kidney checkup that I can take it every day and a year later after another kidney checkup bc I asked for it, they said that would be better if I only take it occasional wich means take 2 tablets 2-24 hours before sex and then take 1 tablets every 24 hours until 48 hours after last sex.

And yes I felt shit for about a month....nausea mostly

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is used to reduce the risk of getting HIV (human immunodeficiency virus).

PrEP works by stopping HIV from getting into your body and making copies of itself (replicating). You'll only be protected from HIV infection if there are high enough levels of PrEP in your body, so it's important to take it correctly.

PrEP can be used by anyone from a community or group that is most at risk of HIV, or people who have sex with people from those networks.

You may benefit from taking PrEP if:

you're an HIV-negative man having condomless sex with men, and other people who have sex within these networks

you have a partner (or ex-partner) with HIV

your partner (or ex-partner) comes from a country with high rates of HIV

you have condomless sex with a partner(s) and do not know their HIV status

you're a trans or non-binary person and are regularly having condomless sex

you exchange sex for money, drugs, shelter or another reason

you are injecting drugs

I asked this question at the Sexual Health Unit.

As I understand it, you need a healthy kidney system to process the PreP.

If your kidney function is poor, you will not gain the protection against HIV that PreP gives.

This is why you are required to have a regular kidney function test to access PreP.

Tenofovir *can* affect the kidneys in rare cases, which is another reason for the kidney function tests.

This is reversible upon ceasing PreP.

I went for a regular full set of tests a few days ago and the very helpful young woman adviser who interviewed me discussed my sexual activity and offered it to me, and explained about the possibility of problems if my kidneys weren’t right, and took a blood test to assess the risk or otherwise for me.

I think I've had the kidney function test every time I've picked up some more, only doing event based so it's not that often though.

We all are unique in our responses to medication, including side effects. At least we get checked frequently with prep, to ensure our kidneys are performing within normal, healthy limits.

Modern usage widely accepts nauseous to mean "feeling sick," so saying "I feel nauseous" is very common and understood
