"I tried various OTC treatments which didn’t work so I saw my GP who after asking me to provide a nail clipping for testing, prescribed Terbinafine tablets. I took them for 7 months and the infection cleared up. See your GP but you will need to be patient, it takes a while for the drugs to work. I also had a blood test to check my liver and kidney function." That's the gold standard treatment, albeit with the need for regular blood tests, to monitor impact on kidney function etc

"Anyone had any successful treatment for nail infections please? getting quite fed up with wasting money on products that don't work " There’s some strong tablets you can get from the doctors that work a treat . All those ones from the pharmacy don’t work . They will want a blood test though as it’s liver toxic to some people. I was fine when I did a course of them a few years ago

"Whiy is this fungus so expensive to get rid of?" it's typically because our nails are pretty effective barriers, developed over many years. The infection is typically below the nail, which stops the fungus being accessed by the treatment. The cure rate is incredibly low, for most of the treatments. Our feet are also usually contained within perfect breeding grounds of these fungi, warm, dark, humid and a very high proportion of people have skin infections on their feet, without realising it. Due to the ever present fungi, reinfection is amazingly easy. Overall, the nails are very tough barriers, for liquids to penetrate and most treatments are water or oil based. Just realised you asked about the cost - I think it's the difficulties and the very long treatment time, for clearance of the fungus.

"Odd...Um that's not working OP. So I had a pesky verruca and it took daily applications and aggressive filings and keeping it covered in bandages while in shoes and no shoes or slippers or socks at home. If I had a fungal infection, it would be socks and sandals until it cleared up even in bloody winter. Also put your socks on a hot wash with that Dettol wash thing... or bleach if your socks are white. I know not everyone wears clean socks every day but I need to because I'm a sweaty mess all over..every day! multiple times a day. Gym socks straight in the wash. Do not keep them on after the gym."

Worthy of consideration also as a sterilisation action before hand washing them.

From the Dr But can be heavy on the liver So expect a liver function test and then a course of of tablets for about 6 months " I live in work boot and as my job dictates it, terbenifin tablets are the only thing that works for me but like above, blood test, moth and a half of daily tablets then another blood test to check liver then more tablets, iv tried all over the counter stuff and non fully cure it so tablets work out the best option as most remedies takes age as the nail grows out, some are rather expensive so it's better and cheaper to pay the prescription

"Anyone had any successful treatment for nail infections please? getting quite fed up with wasting money on products that don't work I read somewhere that vicks vapour rub works" It seems tob effective for getting rid of fungus under nails but in my case leaves the nails unsightly and brittle. However it appears to enhance circulation in the toes during winter. In summer there is no substitute for sandals and sunshine. My nails come back to normal easy to clip life, then.

"Anyone had any successful treatment for nail infections please? getting quite fed up with wasting money on products that don't work " There is a cream you can ask for if you go private, I can't remember it's name but It's a combination product - antifungal antibacterial and steroid - deals with all those kinds of skin and nail issues within 48 hours. Dermatologist I went to said if it's not shifting with over-the-counter medicines it's totally pointless keep trying different ones as it's built resistance . You should be able to get it in the uk with an online dermatologist consultation.

"Terbinafine is the most sure fire Way Oral tablets for 3 to 6 months Anti fungals can be heavy on the liver Prescription only Seconding this over all else" Before this is considered, all topical treatments need to be exhausted first. You will also need to provide your GP with nail cuttings to confirm infection, then have bloods done to check your liver function before, during and after treatment. Therefore it isn’t something they will issue without having tried everything else first. Tea tree oil was recommended by my podiatrist when I picked her brains about it during one of my appts. (Just FYI, I do know what I’m talking about - registered HCP that spent 2 years working in primary care seeing fungal nail infections on the regular before anyone comes at me!)
