"I HATE going to the dentist. So much so, I went for the first time today in 30 years because a tooth broke. My options are a root canal & crown or an extraction & (if I want) an implant. The cost for both options is similar. They say the root canal might not fix the issue. Considering my fear/hatred of going for dental work, does anyone have an opinion on which is the better choice?" extraction and later an implant

Similar to you I have only been 3 times in 15 years to have tooth extraction each time. Not sure what option you should take but my fear of the dentist is so bad that I gag very easily when they are doing a check up that now they take X-rays tell me what needs to be done then refer me to another dental practice who put me to sleep and extract the tooth.

"Thanks for the suggestions. That helps me to decide what to do. My fear of the dentist comes from all the work I had done as a teenager. The worst part was having teeth removed and countless injections to numb my mouth. I seem to be resilient to anesthetic & needing it to fix this tooth is stressing me out" Speak to your dentists before you go in as they can adapt their pain relief. I've had 5 injections in one sitting and nothing worked to numb me. A decade later the pain relief ws much, much better. Lidocaine is wonderful and so is whole cloves for instant toothache relief.

I guess things are better than they were 30 years ago! I have to do it so I'll find out soon

About 10% of people are the same. I found a dental surgeon who gave me a 'nerve block' injection into the nerve bundle at the back of the jaw. Dont geel a thing now!

"I had to get an emergency dentist appointment last year to have a broken tooth removed. It was my first visit to the dentist in about 20 years. Mainly because I couldn't afford regular checkups and there's no NHS dentists available. Things seem to have come on so much since my last visit. I honestly didn't feel a thing throughout the whole time. From the anesthetic going in to the tooth coming out was probably ten mins tops. The extraction itself took less than a minute and I didn't even notice it was out 😅 I was told an implant would be about a grand. I don't have that kind of money to spare so I'm rocking the pirate look for now " Without traveling overseas, you will be lucky to get an implant for a grand...unless it's the postcode lottery job..

"A big no to root canal mind if I ask why?" I may have just had an unfortunate experience or a dentist who didn't care but I had one and had three weeks of torture with the infection that came after it. The tooth always gave me problems after that so on changing dentists they sorted it and afterwards said they wouldn't have done a root canal and just given a crown straight away. You just trust them don't you so I went with it, but I would never have another, I would rather have the tooth removed, and that is coming from a woman in her sixties who when younger had butchers for dentists !

"I think I'm going to opt for the extraction and an implant. The initial estimate for that was 3 grand, which is bonkers! Sadly, I don't have much in the way of options. The root canal was still way over 2k I guess there will be no nice treats for me or a holiday for a while" It's expensive isn't it. Does the dentist do payment plans?

"The big shock with the dentist is the cost, had to succumb to my first lot of private treatment few weeks ago, one minor extraction, two fillings, visit the hygienist, just over £700.00 if I was not still working and only on a pension not sure I could have afforded it. Not a cost I ever considered building into any retirement plans, can't remember any government advising us to do so." This is the reason why American predatory profiteers should never get their hands on the NHS. How many Tories enjoy this sort of double extraction? 'Land of the free, where poor health leads to bankruptcy', no thanks

(flights + hotel for a week + root canal + crown) is going to cost you much less in Turkey than just doing the root canal in the UK.

"It's an absolute scandal the price of dental work. The law should be changed so every dentist must carry out 75 percent of NHS treatment instead of working for pure profit." That would just result in dentist practices closing down

I have heard if you have dental work done in Turkey if there are any problems further down the line a UK dentist won’t deal with it or it can be very expensive to put it right.

"Had root canal work done a couple of years ago. Not fully successful so options now are try again privately at staggering cost or extraction. Wish I had gone for extraction and been pain free 2 years ago. " Ditto, ended up with an extraction and infection cos it wasn't all removed.

" Thanks for that I thought I had an unfortunate experience as well, but I’m still unsure. I had a minor issue with my wisdom tooth pressing against another tooth, which led to the removal of two teeth a wisdom tooth and a molar on the same side. Later, another hygienist mentioned that the molar might not have needed to be removed. I recall the dentist being unclear about whether I should remove both the wisdom tooth and the molar or just the wisdom tooth with a root canal for the molar. However, knowing I was on a tight budget, the dentist simply suggested removing both.

"I work with a large dental clinic with over 70 dentists in England and overseas. What I say here I can debate with anyone who is suitably qualified and I guarantee that my advice is correct , however arogant I may sound . My aim is to help OP and anyone in similar predicament. 1. Extraction is always the last resort. Do NOT extract until you've consulted with knowledgeable dentists/surgeons. One in a hundred perhaps , but you'll find the right medical professional. Even when the tooth is broken at the root (molars with 2 or 3 roots), depending on specifics, partial extraction is possible, leaving the rest in situ. A tooth preserves bone density. 2. Root canal treatment RCT is done when the nerves are inflamed and cannot be saved. Prior to RCT , pulpotomy can be considered. Prior to pulpotomy and RCT, healing the tooth with antibiotics may be possible. RCT is better than extraction. It can be done under NHS , Band 2. Privately £300-450. 4. If the tooth cannot be saved and has to be extracted , implant is way better than a bridge . Bridge is, in my view, crime against humanity. Do not do it. Implants have high success rate. Bone augmentation and sinus lift may be required and can be done at the time of extraction. It depends on many factors. 5. Do not go to Turkey. I can connect you with dentists who are also maxillofacial surgeons. The best of both worlds. If implant is required, the clinic in London can do for circa £1500, including crown . I have no fee sharing arangents with these professionals , have no intention to advertise any services, it's all about helping you with no other motive. PM me if interested . Wish you well!" Yes this !! Well done you wise words

"I'm not going to Turkey or anywhere else to get any work done. My biggest problem is that I HATE the dentist. As I have not been there for so long, I just wondered if one option was better than the other. The cost is high but that's not my issue. I just want to do this once & do it right & minimise visits. From what I've been told, the decay has gone very low & that's why a root canal might not work/last. I am probably going to go for the extraction & implant to eliminate issues and stop the teeth on either side shifting. I also don't want gaps in my teeth. " I think you're very wise choosing not to go abroad for treatment. I also think you've made the right decision re treatment but I'm no expert. Most of us have had a lifetime of dental treatment that was the best that could be done within NHS criteria. We're now faced in many cases, with choosing the option we can most afford. Good luck with your treatment, may it be pain free and long lasting

If you are likely to have multiple injections and get panic attacks, it’s often the adrenaline in the injections not you. I didn’t know this until a consultant told me. Since explicitly asking for non-adrenaline it’s a much calmer and better experience. Yes the discomfort of multiple injections is still there, but it’s a far better experience. Re implant; it’s worth noting it’s a pretty brutal experience and is multiple visits (setting the base into the jaw bone. Waiting for it to set. Then returning for the tooth.) this will need multiple injections. Yes it is a more “permanent” outcome. A crown is likely to be just one booking.

I was similar to you, shit scared of dentists due to having gas all those years ago, but had to go due to teeth starting to fall out and constant gum pain. Went private, so more costly, but the dentist fixed me up a selection of plans, I chose to go the implant route and had the whole top teeth replaced by porcelain. Best thing I ever did, no more pain, no more dentist fear as I only now go for a six months scrape and clean. Cost me 17K though

They can last 15-20years, even longer.
