For those on anti depressants how do you manage with the dulling of sex drive for those who have the side effects

Not an issue getting hard or anything

but it takes longer to cum or one doesn't end up finishing at all

I’ve been on a low dosage for over 10 years now and whilst I feel good in general terms, it’s a nightmare with the side effects with sex. I’ve tried various brands and spoken to the Doctor about it. It seems there’s little you can do about it?

I have no problem getting aroused and I still love the feeling of sex but it takes ages to cum. Condoms make it even longer to cum. And there’s so many times when I can’t cum. Not ideal, and you feel bad for not finishing or you feel bad that the other person might feel disappointed. It’s difficult not to think about all this during the act which obviously doesn’t help. In the brief moments I’ve come off the medication my libido is so much better. But from my experience I prefer taking the meds just to feel better in general life. Maybe finding a new kink will help?

The worst are the SSRI's. Sertraline is notoriously bad, it just dulls everything to the point of leaving you feeling numb. It effects guys very badly, no libido and no erections.

It's side effects are devastating and there is even a condition that people can suffer from that can last for ages, sometimes years after coming off it. It'd been called "chemical castration' by some users.

And it's not unknown to cause severe sexual dysfunction. There was a Panorama special on Sertraline and it's side effects on early this year.

If you need help speak to your doctor and get appropriate medication but I'd avoid this particular group if you fancy keeping your sexual health, healthy, and not lose all your desire and ability to have sex.

I'm on Venalafaxine 225mg. It's an SNRI, but similiar in how it works to an SSRI. I find my sex drive is normal and no erection problems, but can take me AGES to cum. Thankfully I find this community fairly knowledgeable and understanding so noone has seemed disappointed if it doesn't happen.

I've just been put back under the care of Community Mental Health for my Bipolar and they'll inevitably push me to go back onto Lithium which I previously found numbed everything. My ex was in antidepressants and completely lost her libido, but had perimenopause kick in at 30 so that may have been an exacerbating factor. Bloody pharmaceuticals.

They have a time and a place as part of a structured recovery programme. Unfortunately they tend to be handed out as an easy fix without an exit strategy in place. I'm a nob who reads exciting publications such as the British Pharmapsychological Society's Guidelines for the Treatment of Bipolar. I almost always know far, far more than the GPs and mental health teams about medication. Self education is critical when it comes to mental health and treatment.

So to give people more context on 150mg sertraline have been for a few years

Have no issues getting hard or even having any issues getting aroused in the right cases

It's mainly the delay with ejaculation

There's lasting longer and there's not finishing

Just lasted longer when on sertraline (50mg) and was fine with that as I used to be too quick haha. I wasn't on a high dose but I found coming off them very hard. Brain zaps for 2 months, flu type symptoms for 3 long weeks. I was a dick though and just went cold turkey so when you feel better and come off them speak to the doctor and follow their advice lol

I used to be on sertraline and it made my libido drop off totally, I’d get odd bouts of crazily being horny but 99% of the time I had no interest in sex at all

I’m now on venlafaxine which has brought my sex drive up a bit but it’s working better for my other issues so it’s not too bad

Same here mate, suicide ideation, depression, ptsd, anxiety. I have them all, been to every type of counselling nothings helped. I’m now on the highest dose of sertraline, this is my sixth different antidepressant I’ve tried. Still have more bad days than good.

May be worth trying different ones to see how you get on

My boyfriend is on 200mg of Sertraline per day plus 50mg of Trazodone on top of that. He's a completely different person to what he used to be. As has been said more bad days than good. He wants to come off them (correctly with appropriate medical assistance), but He's anxious about how it will effect him. Even if he were to change to a different medication he would have to clear the Sertraline out of his system first and it's that phase which worries both him and the doctor.

We do still get intimate but not as often as we used to. He was never fast to cum before the mess so I can't say it's had an impact on his duration.

Antidepressants can be a real help. But they can also be a curse.

Sertraline for me, been on it for 6 and dose increased, I can go forever and please the ladies with multiple orgasms, trying to explain why you can't cut is difficult, I've had women say I don't find them sexy or attractive but that's far from it.i don't wish to go into my medical issues with any women but sometimes you have to try and explain.

It's the ignorance displayed here that stops people opening up to others about this topic. Absolutely dismissive yet completely uneducated in the matter they're dismissing. A matter which is affecting a person's life to the extent medical intervention is needed.

As well as not understanding the fact you've pointed out (chemical imbalance) they're obviously unaware that there's a cause to this, often traumatic. Also the fact that not using this "quick fix" has led to countless people taking their own lives.

Sorry for the negativity. But ignorance has no place when it comes to a persons mental health. Depression and its treatment goes way beyond how it effects an individual libido and performance. Maybe they've been lucky and never encountered someone suffering (yes suffering) with depression. Or, more likely, due to their absolute dismissiveness no-one has felt comfortable opening up to them. That could be a very dangerous situation right there.

I understand that at the time I went to the doctor I really needed them, but they should be issued alongside coaching of coping methods, not just given out like candy.

I am not advocating for those who need them to stop taking them, just trust your own body and stop if you feel you can.

For people with low mood disorders/atypical unipolar depression, so chronic, like say, dysthymia, they just still whack out first line response of ssri's. Bad move. Didn't do anything for me, sertraline, citalopram, fluoxetine (prozac) just overheating. In fact, they were so pointless that coming off them straight also did nothing, yet due to all the black box warnings (warning, may cause increased suicidial ideation etc..)

The mental health treatment in this country alone is a discrace. Especially if you have adhd and are treated like a "stims" smartie eater. If the first line ssri fixed you, then good

I'm not sure what percentage is fixed by ssri first line (lazy doctor) treatment and not actually damaged by the brain zaps and such that may occur when you try to come off them, due to a negative response. (I'm not a doctor or any trained such, but had to do some reading for myself)

In fact I found that a good pizza or a kebab was indeed pretty boosting, so yes,chronic low mood, my classification, better than ssri. I never tried snri's/ssnri's or stims (for adhd type)

Talk to your GP. I have been on antidepressants for 20 years and had a lot of trouble with some. There are so many types...they just have to find the one for you

Sertraline I hated to the point it made me worse and had those “dark thoughts” constantly.

Started off with citalopram at uni and ended up on 100mg daily… I didn’t have an issue with them but I could last at least an hour being too, and surpringly made me have a bigger load

I'm on citalpram and like others have said, takes ages to cum and more often I can't cum at all.

Getting an erection is usually fine but does come and go during a session. Definitely not got the full sensation though. 70-80% at best

But weighing it up, I'd still prefer to be on AntiDs as I was all over the place beforehand with a very short fuse. Ruined a relationship, lost my job too.

Life is definitely better on them.

I’ve been on Sertraline since 2018. Literally helped save my life after a dark moment. It makes it harder to cum but not impossible. I wasn’t massively sensitive anyway & I don’t lose erection, I just last a long time! I am going to ask to switch to something else because it’s making my GERD worse, otherwise I am ok with it, I think… we’re all different, it’s really interesting to hear other peoples experiences

I've been on TRT testosterone replacement injections for 6 years Now and erections are a problem.

You can get one simply when standing in Tesco check out queue or in Gym or anywhere else that you don't really want one. Slightest thought of sex or looking at someone and having dirty thoughts.

Not all erections happen in the bedroom and can be very embarrassing

Apologies for the late response , Ive been taking it for a long time now and to be open and honest it has improved my mental health but still struggling in my mind , its like ive got 2 demonds ( 1 on each shoulder ) and they are both at logger heads , and it wont stop , its always over thinking constantly and saying things like why aren’t you with anyone , no one wants you , your 40 yr old and you aren’t even having regular sex , whats the point in sitting in bar , thats not going to work etc .

Your are right...Some people definitely do struggle. There are obviously different degrees/levels/types of depression. The question for the individual is to what degree/time period are they to be biochemically dependent, and can they influence any paradigm shifts?

I'd have been dead years ago without my Anti-depressant.

Beforehand I was self medicating through alcohol and other drugs (both are shit for depression and just made matters worse). Been in steady employment for over 25 years and been able to cope with the many vagaries that life throws at you (including things like familial bereavements).

Sexually there has been a difference, but I don't know if that's also partly a bit of a testosterone drop as I get a little older. My drive has been reduced but it was tremendous before and did lead me into some risky behaviours. I still have to masturbate at least twice a day if I'm not regularly having sex otherwise I find I get really aggressive with people generally. I find these days condoms kill it for me so my sex life is usually better in a long term relationship. Although I test regularly and there are some understanding people who are happy to have fun.

There's no magic pill but there is help out there. Anti-Depressants could involve trial and error with different types before you find one that works best and sometimes what has worked well for a while suddenly doesn't. It can be an absolute roller-coaster and unfortunately it does depend on the expertise of your GP or your mental health specialist. A good one can literally be a life saver as was fortunately the case for me.

Mental health services have generally been decimated thanks to the previous government and it's going to take along while before they're even back to what they once were. There are still some geniuses and brilliant people working very hard in that field. They will help you help yourself. It can get better, it does get better. I'm proof of that. Good Luck and if you're going through hell just keep going.

Two previous sexual partners were on antidepressants and found it difficult to cum. Once they explained to me why that helped me understand what was going on and it was never an issue if they didn't cum as we had lots of fun because sex is not solely about the climax.

Key for me is having the trust to be able to explain to your sexual partner what is going on for you so that they can be supportive.

I was on antidepressants for post natal depression many years ago and had zero sex drive .. but I would say it was partially the pills and mostly the lack of support from my then husband which turned me off sex.

I’ve been on 100mg sertraline for a little over a year now, although after a pretty rough year I’m looking to reduce that back to 50 with a view to coming off completely eventually. I find they just keep me on a level when it comes to anxiety. As regards side effects, my drive is still high and generally have no issues cumming the first time (although I’m not knocking the delaying effect) repeating can be more of an issue though, it’s not that I’m not enjoying myself

If you have been on sertraline for a long time, plan on coming off, please, I was on sertraline for 10 year plus and suffered 4 strokes the chemist at the hospital said it was probably sertraline, he refused to issue sertraline and insisted on a different antidepressant

I was on venlifaxin at 150mg doctor reduced it after I contacted him regarding no ejaculation

I don’t remember sertraline affecting my sex drive. But it did make me numb and more wreckless cos I couldn’t care less about anything. Coming off them was horrendous as I had night terrors which left me terrified and hysterical in the night for months and months. It’s been almost a year now and I am more or less back to normal but i wouldn’t go back on them again because I would never want to come off them again.

Do a forum search for Sertraline. I had created a thread and there were some good responses there.

I stopped them after a year because I was annoyed by the constant dullness. It did help delay my evacuation though, and arguably helped my concentration too. I could go without masturbating (or even thinking about it) for a week / until I decided I wanted to. Sadly it coincided with having a baby and I didn't get to enjoy much sex when I could actually last a decent time.

So glad I found this thread as I have just finished my first 4 week course of escitalopram and for the first 4/5 days of taking it I was having random erections and then they stopped Iv always had quite a high sex drive but the last 2 weeks I have noticed that I’m not feeling horny and when I do have a wank then it feels quite dulled down, I can ejaculate but it takes me a little longer than it used to but at least I can cum, I was warned about the side effects and have a follow up appointment next week as at the moment I’m on the lowest dosage so not sure what to do for the best at the moment.

Hello. I have had the same problem for 2 years and I found out what causes it just 3 weeks ago. How fucking annoying is it? I knew premature ejaculation was a problem for some but it takes being a laster a bit far. My right arm is twice as big as my left for some reason.
