Depending on your levels you may need medication but if it is not too high you just need to change your diet. Eating just once a day is really not good for you and can increase the risk of diabetes. You would be better cutting down the cola and and eating regular healthy meals.

"If yiu honestly believe you are addicted to cola and only eat one meal a day you might need to tell yiur doctor that just suggesting dietary changes is not going to work and you need the support of a nutritionist/dietician or potentially even an eating disorder team. The reality is that diet has almost certainly caused your diabetes and unless you change it whatever medication they prescribe won't work effectively. The harsh reality is that poorly controlled diabetes (and with a diet like that it will be poorly controlled) could be fatal so however difficult the changes may seem you need to work on them" thank you i am going to try my best to change my diet thanks for the advice

"The best advice can give you as a diabetic for 25 years is do what the specialist say and do it to the best of your ability. This comes me as a twat that didn’t listen to specialists advice and is lucky to be alive. When I stopped being an arrogant twat and listened my levels went from being 30+ daily to being normal . My fault I’m in a bad way and no one else’s. Good luck op. T" thank you i will try wont be easy changes after all these years.but its a wake up call i probably needed

Sometimes I grab a sandwich at lunch but not often then a main meal on an evening when I'm finished work which normally consists of a take away as I live in hotels during the week and by the time I finish there's only takeaways open. I also drink a couple of litres of a day and far too much chocolate for my own good. A change of lifestyle is needed I think, especially as a family member passed away New year's eve due to his diabetes.

"Sometimes we all need that wake up call to force us to change something in our lives that isn't healthy. Sugar is evil, people demonise fat but I fully believe sugar is worse by far when consumed in excess. Original coca cola is by far the best tho so I feel your pain. Its one of my vices too ![]() My gran had a saying, sugar makes you fat, fat keeps you thin…. She lived well into her 90s

"I was diagnosed with diabetes a fortnight ago! I’d lost a stack of weight due no reason so doc did done blood tests - my hba1c was 118 , anything above 48 is a diabetic diagnosis. I have however found the experience so far very challenging- basically nurse said you have diabetes cut out the carbs and sugar and basically get on with it ! Also put me on metformin , which worrying the other nurse I saw today queried whether I should be on insulin … On the upside diabetes uk website is fab for information Reducing carbs is my biggest problem, I travel a lot with my work so spend a lot of time in travelodge etc so eating regularly and the right things I can see is going to be a challenge. I’ve also been much more active which I’m hoping will help - 3 swims so far this week at 20 lengths a time . I’d like to be going to the gym to but have arthritis For those out there with type 2 did the diabetes nurse recommend a blood sugar tester " Don't be put off doing resistance training because of the arthritis. It can help. I had it bad in my knees after a few knee ops. Strength training has reduced it to only feeling a little pain in extreme cold. Recent studies have also shown massive reductions in all cause mortality for those who regularly do some sort of weight training too

If you buy bottles of Cola, switch to cans, see how many you drink a day. Then give yourself a weaning off plan, if you drink it from the moment you wake up til you go to bed, tell yourself you can’t drink any til 12pm…. Each week add on 2 hours, so the second week will be from 2pm, also limit how many you can drink an hour. Do this over a couple of months. And find something to drink instead like a sugar free diluted juice. Both tea and coffee have caffeine in them too, it’s the caffeine you’re addicted too

Its not just sugar you have to avoid, this type of advice is a little lacking in depth. Dietary starches are best avoided too, or at least try to cut them down massively too, anything with processed flour (white flour) is a big no-no, and other simple carbs like potatoes, rice etc need to be cut back. Luckily, there are now loads of flour alternatives, the best known one is flour made from almonds, with which you can make dough for bread, pizzas, pasta etc, thereby being able to enjoy a fairly "normal" diet. If you find cutting out carbs (bread especially) difficult, try to make sure you use items with less refined flours (wholemeal etc), this has the advatages of breaking down in the gut more slowly, meaning the release of sugars is slower, it also has a higher fibre content, which is good for your gut health too.

Also ask to speak to the dietitian nurse at your gp surgery for advice on what type of foods to eat that are healthier for your diet. Some foods have saturated fats & things which aren’t good for you. You need to take this seriously because if you’re diagnosed with type 1 then you’ll have to start injecting yourself with insulin each day & there’s risks of complications with type 1 such as diabetic comas & heart trouble. I Don’t mean to worry you but the phonecall should be a wake up call for you to change your ways. Hope this helps. Good luck

"The problem with treating the underlying cause of type 2 is obesity, is that it is often seen as a "diet" problem. When in reality it is more like an addiction. We often hear people say they have a "sweet tooth" As with many addictions, they are simply a form of "self medicating" people will turn to food like an alcoholic turns to drink, or smoker to cigarette If anyone goes to see their GP, regarding their weight, it's also a good time to talk about mental health, depression. Tackling WHY people turn to food, is an important step. Maybe counselling, antidepressants, ending an abusive relationship, and having people that promote a positive attitude. The last thing someone is over weight needs to hear "is you're a big fat mate, you should go on a diet" that's not helpful, it's patrosning. To people here who have friends and relatives instead asking them "how is your diet going, try telling them they are lookng healthy, and how proud you are, because people were taking about people who are vulnerable, with low self esteem. Self confidence is good medicine Or they are chocolate. For me working in fitness, I see many people with problems similar to this and " I have an addiction to sugar but not because of any of the above ! But on the plus side my diabetic nurse told me few weeks ago I'm no longer obese just over Weight! Every cloud lol! X

"Hi not really kept up with the post but diet and exercise can really help with Diabetes. I would recommend both together, you can join your local gym or slimming world all the best!" Personally I'd avoid slimming world like the plague. Especially for a diabetic, any diet that has heavy carb foods as "free" foods that you can eat as much of as you like isn't a great idea. Most people I know who've done well on slimming world eventually regain every bit of weight because it is a terrible diet that sets up bad habits with food.

"It'll be type 2... Type 1 your born with it an type 2 ya get from an unhealthy lifestyle bro " Ref type 2 there is a an element of truth but not entirely true ! Also none of the experts on here have mention type 1.5 which is caused by an auto immune issue but even the medics assume your type 2 and shame you in the same way

"Start drinking as much water as you can before drinking any Cola. Avoid all non/low sugar drinks containing artificial sweetners including aspartame or sucralose. These have been identified with causing obesity and diabetes themselves. Watch Dr Eric Berg on Youtube. Reduce all Carbs as major culprits here. Please remember that medicines such as Metformin carry their own health risks. Most people think that oh well, I'll just take this medicine and that's the problem looked after for me not realising how the medicine itself will start generating new problems for them in a couple of years. I highly recommend the 'pH diet' for all my clients." Are you a nutritionist?

The PH deit is a load of rubbish you can not change the bodies alkalinity by the foods you eat. Secondly any recommending nutritional advice should be person specific not just recommending the same cookie cutter deit to everyone l.
