Not a mass get out of jail free card but certainly light at the end of a dark tunnel " Govt have prioritised approx 15 million people over 50 for 2x doses in the first vaccination wave. I doubt us under 50s will get anything in less than a year due to the shortages of raw ingredients etc for mass vaccination production worldwide, hence Pfizer saying it'll take a year to produce 1.3 billion doses by the end of 2021.

Indeed. As I said on another thread, there's a worldwide shortage of glass for vials and a shortage of other raw materials required as a carrier for the vaccine. There are many things to be factored in

"Great news from the preliminary results. Hopefully it can continue its effectiveness!" Sadly it could be years later they realise there is a problem with the vaccine. I read that it takes 15 years to produce a vaccine. Most of them 15 years are taken up by safety trials. Anyone who takes a vaccine produced in a few months wants their head examined.

"All the talk of 'returning to normal' is premature, given the massive bill run up, so far. Plus, going back to normal would mean we'd learned fuck all - almost humanity's default setting. That said, great news - and a certain politician won't be around to fuck it all up." Sure. But we can rebuild rather than being in a holding pattern.

They have tested 44,000 people in 6 countries, no vaccine is 100 % safe but this is amazing news " It is true that testing has been accelerated. But my understanding (not qualified, have been listening a bit obsessively to virologists and immunologists discuss it since March) is that most of the acceleration has been in administration and sourcing funding, not in cutting corners. I very much hope that the appropriate regulatory bodies are appropriately stringent with approval, as they would be with any other vaccine (although bearing in mind that vaccines have a much better safety profile than most other medications). I think a certain election result means that it's less likely to be politicised there - here, potentially another question. I very much hope not and will be watching closely. I trust the process in normal times, and at the moment I trust the process as I've heard it discussed, to date. And I strongly suspect that for me, the vaccine will be worth taking pretty much no matter what.

" I would trust the scientific process rather than unsubstantiated assumptions that fly about in the anti-vaccine movement. These vaccines will be tested rigorously. The process being used for developing them is state of the art and the speed is facilitated by the investment and global collaboration that is being drawn on to make these advances. Read the research papers, they are readily available. Think critically about what you read and beware conspiratorial fabrications. Research them too and look for evidence that disconfirms them. Ask yourself who would you rather trust, eminent scientists following the scientific method rigorously or rumourmongers and conspiracy theorists?

You are right about the length of protection against the virus, they didn't discuss this at all, only that it would need 2 shots to give protection. The 2nd shot 1 month after the 1st, and then they said it would be approximately 14 days after the 2nd shot that the body would have produced enough antibodies and resistance to the disease to feel confident that you would be protected against covid!

It's an issue I've been hearing about, and you're right, we don't know yet. I think the hope is on the reliance of the virus on the spike protein, and its general level of low antigenic drift. Plus immunity may be protective from serious disease rather than preventing disease, like some flu shots are, I've heard. But 90% is better than hoped for.

I read that it takes 15 years to produce a vaccine. Most of them 15 years are taken up by safety trials. Anyone who takes a vaccine produced in a few months wants their head examined. They have tested 44,000 people in 6 countries, no vaccine is 100 % safe but this is amazing news Yes, but we don't know what the side effects may be after five years for example. No, but it's not like they pulled all this stuff out of thin air, like a kid with a science kit. Same as Gates and his vaccines in India? scientific link or its just pure shite the only problem with this point of view is it also works for the vaccine ... show us scientific evidence it wont have harmed people 5 years down the line or its crap ... see realistically i will probably take my chances and take it to get back to normal but i wont down play other peoples legitimate concerns " You can't prove the future. Anything is a calculated risk. Proving the impossible is not the same as proving serious allegations about a philanthropist who's been tied up in conspiracy theories since forever. I can't prove anything, I'm not a scientist, but I know enough about the scientific method to be able to trust the process, even with caveats in this emergency situation.

"The Bill Gates stuff actually baffles me" I know right ,my opinion is like so what if he makes a fuck load of money out of it? If lives are being saved and people not getting seriously ill what's the problem. I think there's some people who really need to remove their foil hats. Next they will be telling us that we are all really inside the matrix and this virus is actually a computer virus!!!

The whole world gripped by a pandemic, multiple researchers in all corners of the world and a pharmaceutical company is the first to come up with it? And I’m just saying before people have a go at me, it wouldn’t surprise me if the virus was manufactured in a lab as well as the cure at the same time. It’s just a license to print money. All you have to do is have shares in a ppe company before release, then when you have “found a vaccine” charge through the roof for that as well. " There never was this mystical past where doctors stopped you in the street and gave you an instant diagnosis! There was diptheria and polio, 1 in 5 children never making it to adulthood, breaking your leg being a death sentence, people coughing up chunks of lung with tuberculosis. Getting a "tincture" for cancer treatment, which was probably just a mixture of vinegar and liquorice, maybe with a pinch of arsenic for good measure. I'm not harking back to the middle ages, or victorian London. This was the reality of my fathers childhood. I was only born because my dad was an early trial patient for streptomycin when he was dying of TB. Without that he would have died before i was conceived. "Great news from the preliminary results. Hopefully it can continue its effectiveness! Sadly it could be years later they realise there is a problem with the vaccine. I read that it takes 15 years to produce a vaccine. Most of them 15 years are taken up by safety trials. Anyone who takes a vaccine produced in a few months wants their head examined. " This is a mrna vaccine, which is designed to be quickly built, once they have the genetic instructions ready then its very quick to engineer. Have a read of the pfizer blog and they explain how it works in your body its nothing like a normal vaccine which contains a live or killed virus which can take up to 15 years to complete as they are growing and manipulating genetic parts of viruses, this will give us a break until a different vaccine can be found. And yes I would take it.

Yeah it's really strange that a pharma company comes up with a vaccine when all those other researchers employed by B&Q and Ikea and Birdseye Frozen Foods and Dulux paint fail to find one... We need to get Carlsburg on the case... If they did a vaccine! Oooh or M&S" Nah! Cillit Bang and the virus is gone!

"We see Pfizer are saying to the uk regulators if they are slow in approving the new vaccine then the uk 10 million pre booked doses will go to other countries. Strong arm tactic from pfizer, approve all lose. " Or go that extra step to ensure it's safe to protect UK people

All you have to do is have shares in a ppe company before release, then when you have “found a vaccine” charge through the roof for that as well. There's no evidence that the virus was produced in a lab. That's a conspiracy theory. And... Did you expect Love Honey to develop a vaccine? Developing pharmaceuticals is... kinda what pharma companies do... I never said it wasn’t a conspiracy theory, hence the tin foil hat comment. But you very definitely say there is no evidence it was produced in a lab. Care to explain why? And yes, I know they do. But there are independent researchers all over the world at any one time working on other drugs/ research nothing to do with big pharma companies. Universities for instance. Etc etc. All pharmaceutical companies do is push drugs that do not cure anything they just basically put a chemical bandage on a problem, knowing full well it’s not a cure. But there is no money to made in a cure. Studies have been done on bats in the area which show similarity to other bat viruses, and (can I quote this in a citable way? Sadly not) the virologists I listen to (This Week in Virology) say that the markers of human genetic engineering would be obvious and not look like that. Trump made it up to make China look bad, China turned the accusation right around. Politics. Universities often work with pharma companies for this sort of thing, see Oxford and AstroZenica. ... And we're back to conspiracy theories. Yup. Pharma just makes us sick. Right. (have been alive since 1999 due to medication ) When you get off your high horse, research about anthrax. It has been knowingly used as a weapon, does exist in nature and is easily produced in a lab. Basically all the things that Covid 19 is. As for medications, yes they prolong life. But the method of diagnosis is now all down to the pharmaceutical companies policies and guidelines. Long gone are the days when a doctor stops you in the street and says you are not well and can tell you exactly what’s up with you. You have to tell them and all they do, is prescribe one of the recommendations provided by the drug companies. Except one is a virus and the other isn’t.. When did doctors stop people in the street?. "How cold is that... ? Surely large refrigerated containers will go to testing sites and the injection could be given there... will take time... but a massive step Fantastic news I'll need a bit of working out as I think commercial refrigeration units are generally geared up to work at around -20C. -80 C are common place in hospitals or anywhere where scientific research is carried out. They plug into normal mains electricity And transportation in dry ice. No big problem there" Do you know how cold dry ice is solid CO2
