Self isolation for operation

Hey guys,

Just putting a post on here if anyone knew where I’d stand in regards as my partner is due to have an operation and we have all been told to self isolate for a week before the op. Would anyone know if I’d have to take it off sick(paid), annual leave or unpaid leave???

Thanks.

Best check with your employer and all the best to your partner

Contact NHS 111 to self declare and download a form to show your employer, ticking the box to say you have been contacted by test and trace. The self isolation period is two weeks, not one week.

incognito mode ;-)

Hopefully they have put this in writing as proof for your employer,As your employer would be the one to ask

Not all that North of North London

I would hope an employer would give you the time off as compassionate leave it allow you to work from home.

You are not qualified for sick leave as you aren't I'll just shielding so if the don't it would be annual leave

This is what the NHS website advises people to do in a pre hospital household isolation situation.

Or it suggests the person needing surgery separates themself from the rest of the household so the others can still go to work.

Whether the NHS advises or not, it's a terrible bit of advice. Lying to an employer to get time off is never a good idea

Have you had a chat about it to your boss? I think legally it depends entirely on your contract of employment but in these strange times I think there’s a lot that could be resolved with compassion and understanding etc.

I'm in exactly the same situation. My employer is allowing me to work from home.

However, we'd previously agreed if that weren't possible we'd split it. 2 weeks pre operation as annual leave. 2 weeks post operation compassionate leave.

as someone already said Citizen's advice.

i cant see how your employer is going to pay if its your partner i think it would be a case of unpaid leave.

I read an article by a surgeon who said some people are turning down elective surgery because they can't afford to lose their partner's salaries. He said he thought the two week isolation was unnecessary and a pre admittance Covid test would be just as safe.

Surely you would want to avoid any risk of infection post operatively anyway?

Hey guys,

Thanks for all your replies

I have contacted my Hr department and have received two conflicting answers as one person said it goes as sick and another person from the same department said it’s annual leave or unpaid.

My partner can’t stay anywhere else as her family live miles away and even if she went there then they would have to self isolate?

Just wanted to know if anyone on here knew before I went back to the hr department.

I’m laughing to myself that I’m trying to get the information off a swinger site but couldn’t get it off google

Wife had an op last Monday...had to isolate for 2 weeks before and has to for 2 weeks after. Had a Covid test the Thursday before the Monday op.

You could take it as holiday, your employer might take this as sign of your support for them in these difficult times.

If the NHS are prepared to give you a 'fit note' then your employer can treat this time as sick leave. Search for 'dependents leave coronavirus', the working families org gives some good advice there.

If you are unable to get a fit note then I agree with your HR person no 2 that it would be annual or unpaid leave as it is planned time off.

Depending on how many cases are in your area could you not mask up and take extra precautions ie. refraining from unnecessary trips out etc. Your partner will still, I hope, be tested prior to any operation taking place. You will be able to find out how many cases are in your area online which may help you decide which option you need to take.

Good luck and I hope all goes well for you both.

Kx

Could you stay with a family member or friend whilst your partner self isolates?
