The BBC news site just notified me that as of the 24th of July face masks will be required when you enter shops, failure to do so could result in a £ 100 fine.

As things stand that would mean that face masks must be worn on all public transport and in all shops, but not in pubs and restaurants, it all seems a little strange Considering that the threat level is being reduced and lockdown has been eased .

Covid is still out there infecting and affecting people lives , does it not seem odd that face masks are been used now rather than at the begining and if it is so important why is it not in effect till the 24th rather than tmz

Of course it is odd, but you are talking about a gvt that started quarantining people coming from outside the U.K. in June when we had more cases than most countries instead of doing in February. Why should these idiots who’ve done everything later than everybody would not do the same thing with masks?

I guess the delay is to.give them time to publicise it and give people time to get used to the change. Between now and July 24th I think you'll see more people voluntarily wearing masks in shops and also more shops making it mandatory themselves.

As for the pubs and restaurants, I don't see how it would be viable or workable. Plus it would kill their business stone dead.

As for taking so long, I think it's now a case of the govt being desperate and just implementing any measures it can.

It's going to kill the high Street. Why bother going shopping when you can't try anything on, have to queue to get in places and have to wear a mask. Most people will just shop on line, shopping suppose to be a pleasurable experiance, may as well save on the petrol and parking and get everything delivered to your door!

In Asia face masks are commonly accepted, and Asian countries have some of the lowest rates of infection.

But for some reason Britain and the US are full of whiny little babies who can't cope with the idea.

People have been wearing them in Asia for years but due to poor air quality not to stop the spread of any infection.

The reasons why infection rates are lower in these countries is because of the autrotiarian governments which locked down early and controls their populations at their will.

Saying that I do question the reported death toll especially in China where its probably considerably higher than they admit.

If we have to wear them so be it, if it's stops the spread its a good thing.

The reasoning is all wrong though. Surely it should be to stop the virus, by excluding certain premises pubs, restaurants, gyms surely these are higher risk with people being in close proximity for longer periods. I admit it's not practical but surely the logic for having them in shops is the same for all public indoor places.

I understand all the reasons for wearing them, but I find it extremely hard to hear what anybody is saying when they have a mask on.

I didn't recognise a friend and I couldn't hear what she was trying to tell me when I bumped into her in a supermarket.

I know that my hearing isn't 100-percent perfect, but I didn't realise that I slightly lip read as well.

It certainly will make me less likely to go out as I hate asking people 5 times to reapeat what they have just said.

I know it can't be helped and I know the reasons people are going to be wearing them everywhere now.

Makes you wonder if the governments opposition to face masks at the start was not that there was no evidence that they didn’t work. But that the government were worried as we had insufficient supplies

Central

We've become a bit more like Trump and the USA, wherr he's now worn a mask. They've needed a week or so to take a decision that could have been tain less time than they've spent, just in the last week, talking about making a decision. They play the public for fools and some are happy with this.

It's a show of doing something that is right, like when they imposed incoming traveller quarantine in June, not March onwards.

We've had many different changes in a short period of time and knowing which of them may have made things worse, if any did, is probably not going to be possible.

After a long list of poor results and decisions, it's now about pushing out anything that can get money back to business and adjust public perception in favour of the government and to feel good about being out returning to a similar life to pre covid19.

The good news is that wearing a mask may help prevent infection and it's fairly easy to achieve. Scotland have been in the lead here.

No guidance from WHO said that there was no evidence they work.

Plus its not masks were being asked to wear just a covering could be as simple as a scarf and I think everyone has one of those.

"Ok, so any nurses here? How often do you change your face mask when working?"

I’m currently an ICU porter/doffing assistant working within clinical. Face masks SHOULD be binned every time you remove them... that’s due to not letting infected materials leave the red zone but also that if there’s any infection on them you should raise them to your face again as you are at risk.

Having said that... the first 2 weeks of lockdown we where asked to use one a day and keep it in a burger box when it wasn’t worn...

The washable ‘face coverings’ should really be washed daily.

A very common complaint on wards too, communication especially in emergencies is a real issue. It’s actually the muffling and the masks tend to inhibit mouth movement too so speech volume is really low x

There’s a growing fear... antibody testing is tending to show immunity is perhaps only lasting 2-3 months, add to that we will approach a potentially more infectious time as colder weather appears, add to that there’s actually a large number of people recovering who are seriously weakened by COVID-19. There’s every reason to try to limit the growth of infection.

I think the timing could be to do with the fact that there is more evidence that masks can be helpful plus the shielding is stopping at the end of August so I think that may have something to do with it to.

I don't know whether a mask gives that much protection or not but we don't really have anything else so even if it prevents the spread by 1% it's better than what we've got at the moment.

I was wondering this too op - why aren't they compulsory straight away?

I have so many other questions about this...

If so many people believe that there will be no second wave, and things are looking good, why is wearing masks in shops being brought in?

Why will it be compulsory to wear one in shops, but not in restaurants or the gym?

Masks aren't recommended for children under a certain age, so what will happen when parents have to take their children into the supermarkets?

At the start of the outbreak, because of the little knowledge of covid-19, they thought that because the closest disease to it was SARS, transmission would be comparable which is very low for asymptomatic people.

The 2m social distancing in supermarkets was in place which would reduce transmission.

I therefore don't believe that the government initially got this wrong based on the science.

Of course, they've been completely useless throughout and as more was known about asymptomatic transmission and shops began to open up, face masks should have been enforced at that time.

The situation now looks very much like the Government are seeing how much better Scotland has got the virus under control and are copying Sturgeon...

The rules came in last friday. On Thursday, when I went to supermarket, I'd say 30-40% were wearing masks. Certainly it hasn't been the normal for 2 weeks.

Also, we need to catch some of the other nasties to give our immune systems something to do so hopefully this won't be for the long term.

But yes, it does have some advantages and people just need to accept that wearing them helps to bring this virus under control

My opinion is that when all this started and they were struggling for ppe then it made sense to say you don’t need face masks as it would have put more strain on sourcing ppe. And now people are so scared to go out shopping, you only have to look at local towns they have such a low footfall now. I believe they are introducing masks to try to get people back out into shops to boost the economy.

Good post, when they weren't mandatory you felt slightly silly wearing one,

now that they are, you don't, everyone else is wearing one, it's just the norm.

.

If wearing one makes others feel safer and more willing to go to shops etc, get on with life, then fine, happy to wear one.

If wearing one helps slow down the spread of covid, then brilliant, surely that's better than having to go into local lockdowns

Supermarkets have been serving customers since all of this started and yet infections have fallen. I have yet to see a supermarket worker wearing PPE, unless those nice uniforms offer some protection Seriously, it seems clear that the current mitigations work and may explain why they are they not required to wear face coverings under the new guidance.

As others have said if this is about managing risks then we are being completely inconsistent by not requiring them in pubs, restaurants and gyms as they reopen. All pose similar or greater risks and we tend to be in them for greater periods of time.

I do wonder how the benefits have been calculated without a "standard" of construction / filtration and how long the effect is actually maintained before it needs changing as it ceases to be effective.

If it works and is effective then few people would not comply. The problem comes out of the inconsistencies that really do not make any logical sense if the science is sound.

I’ve been wearing a mask for supermarket shopping and the odd trip to the garden centre for 8 weeks now. I got some 3 layer homemade ones in a really nice fabric from a woman who makes them locally. Washable up to 60 degrees and look quite good for a mask. I can wash them regularly without concern.

I never wore it for my protection. It became clear to me over 8 weeks ago that if everyone wore face masks we would protect each other more from droplet and aerosol transmission of the virus. I noticed over that 8 weeKs each time I visited the supermarket there were slightly higher proportions of people starting to wear one. Making it compulsory could have happened considerably earlier as the advice was becoming clearer about how it helps stop the spread, but mandatory use now will help reduce risk of transmission. If we all do it we will all help each other. It really is that simple.

If you look at the amount of people out and about.

At the start hardly a soul about very limited shops open. Social distancing in place and people were terrified about getting too close. The more restrictions have eased the more people have ventured out. More people = higher risk of exposure. Face coverings work best to prevent you from passing it on.

Bollocks !!

Poor air quality is not the only reason they wear masks.

They wear masks whenever they have a cold, flu or any other respiratory disease.

You also say:

“.....The reasons why infection rates are lower in these countries is because of the autrotiarian governments which locked down early....”

Bollocks !!

South Korea and Japan are democracies, not authoritarian governments.

And in case you didn’t know, South Korea & Japan did not lock down at all.

The wearing of masks among other measures has contributed to why they have managed the the pandemic better than many others.

It's going to kill the high Street. Why bother going shopping when you can't try anything on, have to queue to get in places and have to wear a mask. Most people will just shop on line, shopping suppose to be a pleasurable experiance, may as well save on the petrol and parking and get everything delivered to your door!

Are you saying wearing a face mask stops you trying on clothes? "

Most shops won't let you try clothes on at the moment

It does seem a desperate measure, a last ditch effort to control the virus and prevent its spread. The government know they can't afford another lockdown. With that why take so long to decide this measure though

Maybe all those who won't wear or don't want to wear a face mask can just panic buy in the next 10 days.

I understand we have to wear them, I do question why now. I find them uncomfortable, with having hay fever and probably won't go shopping in town, but shop online, no problem. Walking by our local pub, there is little social distancing and obviously they can't wear masks whilst eating and drinking, but we have to wear them to get our essential shopping. I'm assuming all shop staff will have to wear them.

No but shops don't let you try clothes on. I was making a point that wearing masks will be the final reason people don't bother heading onto the high street other than to do essential food shopping!

Seriously do you not think people will go, oooo this is more serious that I though so now I'm staying home more.

It's interesting the article on the BBC briefly mentions that mask can increase the risk of spead when taken on and off but that bit of info is being ignored alot.

I've got allergies and am wearing masks. It's uncomfortable but not restrictive.

But ultimately I don't think hayfever is an exemption and we all need to do our bit.

Don't see what all the fuss is about.

In Germany we have to wear one in all shops and on public transport and have done so since the end of lockdown.

In Spain it is the same but also in the street when keeping 2 metres apart isn't possible.

There is a very simple reason as to masks are compulsory now.

We were told to socially distance lots are not doing that regularly.

Because we are not sticking to the rules they have had to try something else.

I know there are debates About the effectiveness of wearing a mask but the way I look at is even if its only 1% effective its the only protection we have right now.

Why are you bringing America into the mix when your earlier comment was about Asia?

Has America now become part of Asia?

Sounds like you are just backtracking now when you realise that you original comments have no legs to stand on.

So let’s get you back on track :

You said :

“People have been wearing them(masks)in Asia for years but due to poor air quality not to stop the spread of any infection.“

And I’m saying you are wrong about that because some Asians wear masks whenever they have a cold, flu or any other respiratory disease and not just for air pollution.

You also go on to say:

“.....The reasons why infection rates are lower in these countries is because of the autrotiarian governments which locked down early....”

To which I say you are wrong because Australia, South Korea & Japan are democracies and not authoritarian governments as you claim.

You also say these countries locked down early.

To which I say South Korea and Japan did not lock down at all. The wearing of masks has contributed to why Japan and South Korea have been able to control the virus without having to lockdown.

I'm guessing that the phony bullshit about the covid partials are now airborne and the science has changed only applys to shops and not the pubs n bars, what a total loda crap, truth is they've scared everyone so shitless this last 3 months they can't get them out of the house, Oxford St is only at 30%, and now just found out that the shop workers are given the option, can't make this sh*t up... There is absolutely nothing covid related about this.

We already have a two tier justice system in many ways.

But "you must do x except in y circumstances" is very common in the law. If shop workers get an exception then they get an exception. Doesn't mean that shoppers do.

So let me get this straight,by following "the science" any shop worker that chooses not to wear a mask, will automatically be asymptomatic covid carrying immune, yeah makes perfect sense. Being "a shop worker" isn't on the list of exemptions

Nope. That's not what I said.

I think the laws are half hearted. The laws are not the science.

The science says covering your face helps. So to help you should cover your face. Take responsibility for your own part in controlling the pandemic.

I don't know what the law is concerning shop workers as I'm not one. They are as much a risk as anyone else.

Asking us to wear face masks in shops 6 months into a pandemic is akin to wearing a condom at the baby shower

Bit satirical - but in honesty maybe this should have been implemented at the beginning?

We didn't have the evidence at the beginning.

We should have done some time ago.

But in this case the condoms prevent the party guests from falling pregnant and the new baby having an Irish twin.

So Hancock is saying it's to keep shop staff safe, which is of course a good thing and those behind perspex screens is good for staff and customers, there are still staff on the shop floor, who could be asymptomatic and passing the virus on to shoppers.

Yes we do go out less. I was pleased when shops started to open and was keen to support my local high street, but it's not the greatest shopping experience and there may now be less people wanting to go out, thus affecting the local economy.

no, because there ain't anywhere near enough police to enforce this. as for from the start, from the start the south east, manchester and birmingham should have been locked down totally in february to help at least slow it (these are the places where things will land first). incoming workers or whatever should have been quarantined immediately, no cow towing to farmers who might have needed pickers etc - make the dole dossers do it for their pay. as for the masks thay hardly keep out the particulates they're designed for, and almost every virus will pass straight through it because of their size.

I agree, but they are not wishing death on anyone... Before last night, washing our hands and social distancing was enough, now it's suddenly all changed, you can see why people are a little confused. Do the existing mask wearers go into the supermarkets where the staff don't wear them and thus not protecting their customers?
