More likely men understood that flashing their cocks made them look more like a sex offender than a tempting fuck.

I very much doubt men put cock pics in the post. People went out and socialised at venues. There would have been a lot less attitude than being on Fab.

Life was different before the internet. People spoke to each other and you actually made an effort to go out and meet people rather than hiding behind a screen and being a keyboard warrior!

I used to work for a publication that among other things carried contact ads. We supplied a box number for anonymous contact and people sent letters and polaroids in and often underwear. They often left the envelopes unsealed and the photos would drop out. The internet has just made it easier.

As strenuously denied by Mariella Frostrup after her window boxes attracted some interest (not a euphemism either)

For us it was ad mag, posting a letter off to a box number for it to be forwarded with a postal order for payment. A meet today took 6 weeks to arrange, boy did we have fun

Back when people actually had to write a letter and try to make themselves sound interesting...

I remember all the hassle, and the time spent - but I never, ever, got a letter just saying "Hi", "Wot u up 2?" or "Fancy a fuck"....!!!

Some things were definitely better back then...

Back in the mid-90s I frequented a couple of phone chatlines - you'd leave an opening 'line' of your own, then listen to those left by women (while they listened to those left by men)...

....when you heard one you liked, you'd send them a message, then carry on browsing whilst awaiting a response from them or from someone to your opening line - and you'd send messages back and forth...

....could get expensive if you were on the line a long time (the ones I used were only about 10p a minute, but some were a lot more) - so the trick was to give your or get their phone number quickly, then talk direct...

....in the couple of years I used them, I think I averaged a meet a month - including my first ever with a couple...

The whole scene worked much better in those days. Guys were scared to pose as couples as they didn't know which day the postman might post a reply to their ad, through the letterbox.

Only genuine people bothered to write to a third party and have their letter/photos forwarded on for a sum of money.

Still friends with couples we met way back then.

Loot the weekly free ads paper was where I first stumbled across the scene as an 18 year old living in London for a year.

Scouring the ads, taking the time to write a letter, enclose a stamped addressed envelope and a face and full length photo, walk to the post box and then wait.

Met 3 couples via Loot that year one of them introduced me to parties and away I went.

It was actually easier for single males in those days as I guess the couples knew that if you were giving them your home address and landline phone number you were most likely being honest and were genuinely single.

Desire magazine contacts section hand written letters and Polaroids it took longer but because of effort people only did it if they were totally genuine

I found it so much beter then having been out the scene and come back the internet is great but it kinda bombards u and it's to easy for people who arnt real or genuine just to post for whatever reason they do which I don't understand myself but that's a hole new thread

For swinging the positives of the Internet is the increase in the number of people who want to try swinging and the ease of connecting having seen photos etc.

The negatives of the Internet is the increase in the number of people who want to try swinging and the ease of connecting having seen photos etc!

Basically it has allowed too many people who are either fake or time wasters or dreamers to dabble. As there is almost no effort required it means any Tom dick or Harriet can dip their toe in and not worry about offending people or actually making the effort to hold a conversation first.

Lost count of the number of people who don't even want to swap phone numbers and have a real chat before arranging a meet! We never meet them!

Portsmouth evening news

(There were thousands of local papers)

Had lots of personal ads with box numbers

Much the same as the internet but slower and photos were simply more difficult to take and expensive

(And for gay/bi most public toilets had at least one glory hole (and there was no cctv))

I tried contact mags (New Direction if I remember). Lots of stamped addressed envelopes, and rarely anything back as a single guy.Never got a meet from them. I had more luck just going out on the town but it wasn't really swinging.

Boring, went out less as harder to arrange as that is also pre mobiles. Stuck with awful TV as pre Netflix and sky was just taking off.

The Internet provides a lot of crap but as an entertainment and communication medium it has changed the world for the better.

Yes we used contact magazines like Experience and Vibrations. As it was relatively expensive to make contact you knew that behind every letter was a genuine desire to meet.

I heard that when squaddie's wives put a packet of OMO in the window it meant "old man out." so many uses from one pack of washing powder!
