I think it's moved on from being used exactly as the acronym implies to a generic term for (usually) an older, attractive woman. So if a woman wants to call herself a milf then she should.

Now I hate the term cougar but don’t mind milf as much!

To me a cougar is a sad old bat who goes out in the real world to night clubs etc and takes advantage of pissed up young guys who wouldn’t look at her twice if they were sober! Needless to say it’s not something I’d do, or something I appreciate being called!

If someone is going to use an acronym to describe me I prefer W. for woman as that's what I am. If they genuinely believe it I'm not averse to A.W. for attractive woman. All these other acronyms leave me a bit cold.
