Sending your personal details to a porn website.... There are many reasons why this is not a great idea.

Personally, I think this could have been resolved through ISP's making the content opt-in as default. This has very little to do with child safety, in my opinion.

We are already seeing people circumnavigate the checks which will allow the government to then start shutting down those alternatives until all internet activity can be identified.

Like I say, there are better alternatives that impact the daily user significantly less. Mobile phone providers requires age verification before unblocking adult content on phones, ensuring the user isn't inputting details into a website to an unknown entity (where most offices are not even in the UK)

If your not looking at illegal porn then there is zero issues.

Plus many are actually giving alternative ways to age verify.

Illegal porn - which would already have been illegal before this legislation and therefore not accessible through porn websites? Completely irrelevant to the topic.

Like I say, there are better alternatives which I have demonstrated.

Went on a site yesterday, it just scanned my face to determine that I’m over 18. Then went about my business. There are so many potential issues but it really does upset me how young kids could easily access (before these measures) hardcore porn which could easily fuck them up at such a young age

Agree 100% but a lot people have a phobia about providing info digitally for a variety of reasons (I’m not one BTW). There was talk of adding a .xxx suffix to all porn sites and then all parents/providers had to do was block sites with .xxx, thought it was a good idea at the time but maybe a little easier to get around than ID verification.

my point was children can download a free vpn and won't need the checks. It takes about five min to work around it.

Hmmm, you mean you'll have to go to a shop that requires ID to prove you're over 18 to purchase...the irony

I think that if children's patents, carers and guardians kept an eye on what they were looking at they wouldn't be able to download a free vpn.

There’s a really comprehensive and factual blog about this on pornbiz worth reading.

Lots of things I wasn’t aware of!

How old were you, by the way, when you first discovered porn? I was only 14!

I think this is the right move, even if it cuts down the majority accessing stuff they shouldn’t it’s a positive.

My issue is how the age verification works, how is the data stored etc. I also don’t want to scan my face to prove age, what are they doing with the image they scan, is it held on a data base?

Also, it is easy to get around with a free VPN

Amazing how worried people are about their details getting leaked.

Yet they are on here and other socials etc

If people want your details they will get them.

We trust certain companies, but not others, how do know what Amazon do with our details?

Use trusted companies like The one that rhymes with Worn Rub who have far more to lose with any data breach.

For more than 50 years we've had to prove we're over 18 to buy porn, this isn't any different, just the paranoia.

You'd have to use another option to verify.

A face pic is taken, encrypted, then destroyed. Apparently.

On one hand its a good idea. But I'm so suspicious. Is it just another excuse to get id and info from us plebs?

I've given my id and info directly to a government department in order to get a passport and a driving licence. They really don't need a round about method, I willingly provided it along with a photo that's checked every time I leave or re enter the country.

This could go wrong in so many ways.

- Legit porn websites getting hacked

- Insiders from porn companies leaking data

- Phishing websites pretending to be legit porn websites stealing people's identities

- Fake websites getting random from people blackm@iling them about their porn habits

- Kids trying to access fringe porn websites which have content which are even worse for them

It's what happens when politicians with little knowledge about technology are allowed to pass laws on how it works.

As well as the VPN there is another potential workaround - tricking the age verification with a random photo of someone (preferably AI generated!) and a "virtual" camera (meaning the photo appears to the age veri to be you). I'm fairly techy but was not able to get this to work over at xhamster.

Everyone understands that, but how many future data breaches will there be where people are asked to pay or have their details exposed from a porn site? So a VPN Is safer for most.

‘Apparently’. More than likely the image is stored in a bucket on some cloud server and the flag in the database is set to verified.

Then once there’s a data breach all those images are available online, along with the fingerprinting done to find out what type of porn people are watching.

Let’s get real it’s all about government wanting to know what you’re doing. How many off us watched porn before we were 18 and how did that harm us, I bet 99% of the population watched before they were 18. Kids will find a way around it

You have to admit that the some of the porn out there now (and the sheer volume of it) is proper grim and potentially very harmful to children. There wasn’t all this stuff so readily available when I was a teenager

Yeah when I was a kid, I had to find shops with private internet browsing to find porn. Or wait for one of my friends to download the videos, write them to a CD and then pass it around.

But this level of difficulty means we get to see some new porn about once a month or so. That too pretty soft stuff. It's wild what's out there today.

I agree that the amount and content of porn available is damaging to the kids and even many adults. It's just the method used here that I am concerned about.
