Alcohol tax

Just want to sound out your collective wisdom .... lots on telly about alcohol abuse and the cost to the NHS. Does the team think that booze should be taxed to the hilt in off licence type places including Chateau Tesco. Pubs and bars should be able to serve up to 4 pints (and equivalent in spirits) at low tax price then there after full tax price so people can socialise without getting hammered (financially as well as physically). Would this help the NHS as staff would have less d*unks to deal with?

I like a drink but have come across a number of alcoholics and shitfaced people and must say we do not enjoy the experience.

when the average binge drinker will spend over £80-£100 on a night out

do you honestly think putting 10p on a drink will have any effect

and how would bars know when you had had your 4 pints

it sounds like another "lets get loads of money of the public" plan to me

and why should every one be punished for the stupidity of 10% of drinkers

i.e. causing problems, and the police say, 'you had a good night now it's time for you to go home', if you don't £100.

As per usual, the 'innocent' will get hammered at the expense of the guilty.

In common with probably 90% of drinkers, we enjoy a drink at the weekend and we very very rarely indeed set foot inside a pub.

We would normally get our booze at the supermarket with our shopping, take it home and drink it.

If this further tax was imposed on booze, we would suffer with over inflated costs thanks to the minority of idiots.

And I wonder how Goverment would spend the additional £Billions that would be generated as a result of the tax hike ?

This is just another piece of BS spin by the governemnt. Binge drinking is part of this nations culture, putting the price of alcohol up is not going to stop that. Would increasing the legal age? would reducing the legal age?

The europeans seem to have it right(not that im any expert) why dont we ask them..

I watched a piece on the news the other day in a downtown area showing a boozeshop (forgot the word lol), and they interviewed a ropy bloke and a not so good looking lady...where were the attractive people? its subtle negative measures like this, that really get my goat.

The problem is not the supermarkets, not the pubs or clubs not bringing cheap alcohol from abroad.

The problem is people who drink to excess and cannot control themselves.

Most of us like a drink but don't get d*unk, almost anything in moderation does us no harm at all.

Taxing ciggarettes to the hilt only had a minor impact.

If you need to get d*unk to enjoy yourself you should be looking at what is wrong in your life.

Dutch courage is a great thing, sponsored by the government since the first sailors were issued a rum ration and since the rum ration was given to the brave guys in the trenches but its dutch courage not d*unkeness.

Perhaps taxing alcohol more would be a bad thing for the social, responsible drinkers, perhaps charging for "self inflicted wounds" at hospitals would be a fairer and more impacting deterent.

Charging for the call out of Ambulances, charging for hospitaL time, after all if the police find them they can give them an on the spot fine of around £80

Now I am ashamed to be British, if this is our culture, culture is about traditions, long standing traditions, things which make us who we are to be passed on proudly from generation to generation, things to hold up to the world and say this is Britain.

If going out with the sole purpose of getting out of your head on drink or drugs is part of our culture it is a sad, sad place.

try livin in scotland there a lot gettin bandied about with this subject one example is minimum pricing per alcohol unit another is no drink promotions in pubs and all sorts of weird n wonderful shit! what they dont appear to realise is that in pubs bar staff are trained and know when to stop someones drink a supermarket isnt. up here it feels like the government is tryin to close pubs with massive job losses and impact on other areas when the problem mainly lies with off licences and cheap cider etc. the majority who enjoy a drink but can behave are the ones bein penalised!!

thats true that, but id say a good 90% of any alchole related truoble that you hear about are in towns, outside pubs

Personally, even tho i like a drink, i think the stuff should be banned, im not fighing a side for drugs like marijuana etc as i dont take drugs of any kind BUT when was the last time you hear of a man smoking a joint and going home and beating his wife up? when was the last time you heard of street fights of doped up people outside dope shops? lol

Ok you get my meaning, alchole is one of the crulest things going, it kill and wreaks peoples lifes, and not only the drinkers, my dad was a alcholic, we had nothing, everything in the home was sold for beer money, many days the only food me and my sister had was the free meal we got from school, he was violant towards everyone in the home when he was d*unk, and even more so when he had no money for a drink, and this is typical for a lot of children living with such parents

Yet

knowing all this its still legal to buy booze and get into such a state

That i dont get, they ban drugs because they are addictive and can kill you.....in my eyes that makes alchole a drug!!!? so whys it legal?

because of the money that comes to the government in tax!! and the fact if it wsnt sold in a shop we would go back to the days of prohibition. whats happened to u is very sad and u can never get those years back and its the same story up and down the country but in the terms of cannabis the long term impact on mental health ie development of schizophrenia etc and other things its a no win situation some people smoke for years and have no issues others drink for years have no issues but there is always an adverse effect of someone and the impact it has on their families xx

Stop the supermarkets selling it at such ridiculously low prices.

If you are 18, have £10 in your pocket and want to spend the evening in with your girlfriend say, do you buy a bunch of Tesco decent flowers for £6-£10 or a crate of cheap beer, a pizza and have enough left over for condoms?

When I was growing up (oohh hark at me, the oldie), the only place you could buy alcohol was the pub, or cider in Tesco's.

Binge drinking wasn't a culture then because we couldn't bloody well afford it, or we couldn't get into the pubs because of our ages.

If you gave all the taxes from cigs & booze to the nhs it would pay for the services twice over.

I think anyone who's walked about a city at kick-out time will be slightly miffed at how much of our tax money is spent on Policing, and that's before we get into what the NHS spends on pissheads.

I, like most people, enjoy a drink or two but I can honestly say I've never been that wankered I couldn't control myself or remember what I'd done.

The only times I've ever been in fights is with pissheads who have decided they didn't like the look of my face whilst I've been walking past. Fortunately I've never lost, but then I always seem to have the advantage of my fist landing roughly where it was aimed...

The number of Police officers bombing around town in vans and cars every single night is a horrific waste of my money.

Even pubs and clubs aren't so much a problem. The problem is people downing half a bottle of cheap vodka from the supermarket before a night out.

When I was a student I had a job in a small supermarket. I threw a good few people out onto the street after they staggered in from the minky council estate the shop was on looking for another 3litre bottle of White Lightning and fell over in one of the isles.

Supermarket prices are the problem. They make alcohol available in quantity at prices that people can afford often.

That's wrong in my opinion.

I don't believe that high end British produce would suffer either. Good quality gins, whiskys (or whiskeys if you must), rums and ales would not sell in lesser quantities. People punching bus stops and going to A&E are pissed up on an 18yr old bottle of Macallan - thus overall tax revenue on these drinks wouldn't go down.

What we need rid of is all this cheap shite found on Tesco or Asda shelves - their own brand crap etc. I've no idea what they cost now but I swear when I were a student Tesco own brand lager could be had for 7p/tin FFS!

Cheap supermarket crap out - no problem to the high-end UK manufacturers, and probably minimal if any loss in revenue to pubs and clubs.

i really do agree with u that supermarkets pricing needs to be review i think 4 cans of tesco value lager is like £1?? add into that the cider etc u could basicaly get complety d*unk for roughly a fiver!! in pubs its controlled more! shuttin time violence has always been a problem its not a new thing and whether it be on the council estates that you so fond of or in the more affluent areas anyone can be an arsehole with one too many then add in the drug of choice cocaine and u got a deadly cocktail!!! x

Once again the TAX word strikes !!

How long do you think it will be until we are all given some form of digital card to be used in puvs,clubs etc that allows you a certain amount of alcohol per week.

Extreme i know but the way the UK is going at the moment with all the computer monitoring etc nothing like this would honestly suprise me.

Its not just the cost to the NHS that is a problem here, its the crimes commited whilst under the influence that really foot the bill.

I have yet to read about someone having a smoke then kicking someone to death !!

make the fines imposed on the yobs and piss heads cover the real cost of policing and stiching them back together again and the numbers would soon drop.

Just an aside if these piss heads had to get up for work every morning then they could not be d*unk all the time
