"Been a while since the last thread, so either you've all lost interest or you're all overthinking whether you should start the thread or not. ![]() ![]() ![]() Quite straightforward really. GP made a referral to NHS but it was a 4 year wait!! I managed to get a reasonably priced private assessment.

" Interesting. I've been diagnosed with ADHD recently. Hi ![]() 4 years is utterly depressing and sadly not unusual! Do you mind sharing who you had your assessment with? I've seen some of the prices for private assessment and they are eye watering. I went through the right to choose process with psychiatry uk so had to wait 6 months for assessment.

"All I think I got from being diagnosed was a bit of an explanation for my ways. Asperger's explained my hyperfocus, style of pigeonholing friendships and always feeling like a bit of a misfit. It also explained why I hate noise and have a shite sense of smell. Dyspraxia explained my clumsiness and poor executive function. ADHD explained everything else -- impulsive behaviour, obsessive projects, inability to complete tasks, boredom in relationships etc. But, many of those traits can cross from one condition to the next -- so it's difficult to know where one thing starts and another thing ends. To be honest, apart from personal understanding, I don't think any of it has been really helpful. I couldn't handle ADHD meds, I was turned down for NHS talking therapy for being 'too complex' and I'm not in any position where I need 'reasonable adjustments' made for work or education anyway. It's odd really -- they're all classed as 'hidden disabilities', but for the large part, the diagnoses have caused me more obstacles than just being a bit of a misfit. It doesn't help that the NHS won't revoke my historic personality disorder diagnoses, that I believe were given to me by a clinician who didn't understand neurodiversity." Interesting! So over all are you glad you got your diagnosis or not? Just thinking out loud... BPD Favourite person Fear of abandonment Mood swings Unstable sense of self Autism Special interest can be a person RSD Emotional reactions to change and over stimulation masking Erm make it make sense! Surely they should have dropped the BPD diagnosis when you were diagnosed with autism and adhd. I don't think 6 weeks of CBT with the NHS is worth it for neurodivergent people, you haven't missed out. It was designed to be delivered over a longer period of time. Who wants to do homework for therapy anyway, 0 dopamine in doing that. Filling it out 10 minutes before an appointment isn't that helpful ![]()

Really has am a lot more self aware and getting a better handle on my emotions and impulses which had gotten me into trouble before. Just starting the titration route for meds and see how that goes. Has helped me professionally to. I'm now starting yo accept and really like who I am now I get why I do stuff.

"Has anyone else found that while being diagnosed with a Neurodiversity, that you also discover you have a comorbidity? M" My ADHD was picked up on while I was a couple of weeks between the diagnostic interview and the ADOS part of the autism assessment. This was with a different psychiatrist though, where I was complaining about being turned down for talking therapy just because I was on the autism waiting list.

I can hear the frustration in your words. Perhaps you can ask to see a statement with your current diagnoses over-ruling the past diagnosis. As for "too complex", ask to see someone who understands the complexities. I can totally relate as I had a counsellor at my GP practice. Session one: talked about the trauma. Session two talked and the trauma and what we will do in future sessions. Session three: sorry you're too complex... Discharge. Tw@t!

"Diagnosed with Asperger's a year or two ago. I feel like I'm rewriting myself bit by bit after 40 years of masking. Maybe my instincts are right for me. It's scary, not sure what's going to be left when the dust settles... Got some long-term counseling support to help make sense of it, six weeks just isn't enough. I hear you about "reasonable adjustments" at work. For me, it feels like i need wholesale change not tweaks." Reasonable adjustments are to comply with legislation, namely the equality act 2010. If your company has occy health, pay them a visit. If you feel the company should make major changes, it may have the right to deploy you elsewhere in the company, or ask you to leave. Perhaps it's just a major change in attitudes?

Thank you and yes -- the Personality Disorder Service wrote a letter to explain why I wasn't a good match for their service, but stopped short of actually writing off the original diagnosis, and as such it remains on my record like a shit that won't flush. Anyway, I've kinda decided lately that I need to stop other people's opinions of me defining how I actually am, regardless of how 'expert' they may be - a lot of psychiatry seems to be turning into a bit of a pseudoscience.

"Oh hey! Diagnosed C-PTSD and suspected but unable to asses just now for either ADHD or BPD. too many overlapping symptoms. Anyway... hi. " Personality Disorders are a learned or acquired response to childhood events, trauma or not being accepted due to developmental differences and parental or peer expectations. They don't really manifest before adolescence, but it's entirely possible to have both -- they should look at your whole life, rather than what's going on now.

"Oh my. Am so glad to find this thread / series. ADHD here. Some days are harder than others but there’s not a moment of my life that goes by unaffected. The really hard stuff: 1. Making mistakes due to things like problems with executive function and then paying the price for that socially 2. Mental and physical co-morbidities, including but not limited to… fatigue 3. The role played by hormones in increasing my worst symptoms. Apparently women with ADHD have to be concerned about this. The things I wouldn’t change: 1. Abstract thinking 2. Creativity 3. Hyperfocus " The world needs lot's of different minds ![]() ![]()

"A question to any of my fellow ASDers does anyone else struggle with forming connections with people and struggle socially. Maybe it’s just me but I really struggle to connect with people in a meaningful way " Yes, I am currently in the same waters as you dude. I won't divulge too deeply into it all, but yesterday (as I got an invitation) I went and hung out with a little group of people I know well. Good lovely people, but I spent near enough the whole time quiet/not being able to speak much or contribute to the conversations being had. I'm very sensitive to energies, but I feel that in my silence, of not actively engaging with those people, I was creating a sort of awkwardness and un-comfortability amongst people there. That then set a negative thought loop in motion which didn't help at all. The one thing I'm always doing through naturally being an inquisitive person, is looking within myself to understand who I really am, why I am the way I am currently and what is necessary for self transformation. I am certain it is possible for people to completely transform into something new and fresh, but it needs a deep awareness of the inner and outer, and a passion for learning.

"Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale Score (ASRS-v1.1) 4 Does anyone know what this means?" I think it's a screening tool used to assess whether someone needs a formal assessment. Scores between 4 and 6 are indicative of potential ADHD. There are three formally diagnosed types of ADHD - inattentive, hyperactive or mixed, but professionals now recognise that someone's presentation can change throughout the course of someone's life.

"~I did read the Dorset Neuro dept's webpage on the subject, but \i was thinking of the human side, ie how does it compare to others here in the forum?" I scored 6 on the test above. The shrink who diagnosed me with ADHD used the Diva 2.0 test - which I think is the standard diagnostic test - casually told me I was 'off the scale'.
