I can't answer for others but my inclination to chat varies a lot on how the initial contact is made. I get far too many emails, generally from people with minimalist profiles, consisting of a single line or fragment along the lines "whats up", "what are you looking" etc. These sorts of messages are far less likely to get my engagement than something making it clear what they are interested in and that this in some way matches what I am looking for.
