We want to do this right, we are happily married for 10 years etc and past that we both had tests to check for STDs.

We haven't cheated but would like to be checked to start.

Is this a common occurance?

our boundaries are soft ATM and full protection will be used.

Do people go for regular tests?

What do you say? Especially if you're married?

Here there is one waiting room and depending on what you are there for you will either see a male or female nurse. If it requires intimate examination you get someone of your own sex.

We go to our local GUM clinic together. It probably amuses the staff but they are professional and only have a giggle if we do.

They know we are swingers and just list it as group sex. They stopped asking numbers when we said what we do.

When we go for our check ups we just tell them we want checks for everything as we are swingers. Never once has any of the clinic staff been judgemental. If anything they are curious. One female nurse even asked how she and her husband could join this site.

Maybe because condoms are not 100% effective, and Stis can be contracted orally, and most people prefer not to use them for oral sex?

It would be in more of a mess if we had a rise of hiv, syphilis and hepatitis. Regular testing and educating people is much more promoted and appreciated by the nhs.

Don't think many go every week and to be honest that would be overkill as most STI's don't show on a test for a fortnight and the more serious one's like HIV/AIDS can take up to 6 weeks.

I go every 3/4 months depending on how active I've been and am completely honest with the nurses there. They're used to me now, and have had some interesting conversations whilst in the stirrups! If anything they are glad of my honesty so they know the risks I'm exposing myself to and what to test for...if I wasn't as honest I don't think I'd get throat swabs and bloods every time as they don't seem to be standard practice in my area.

The GUM clinics are there to be utilised, when people so wish to do so. I personally go every 3 months, even if I have no reason to suspect anything, have had no incidents with split condoms etc, because I can and want to make sure I stay safe. Clearly, this means I AM educated to sexual health. Some people never will be. And it's because of them GUM clinics need to continue to provide the services they do for people who do give a Damn about their health.

Yes, there will be people that don't practice safe sex and that is their choice...I choose to look after my own sexual health rather than concern myself with others. I use condoms on my meets to reduce the risk of any infection and have regular testing so that if, god forbid, anything did manage to get through I can minimise the impact it has on others. If one person did pick up an infection then yes, it does put others at risk but at the end of the day sex with multiple partners is higher risk too...all we can do is minimise the risks by playing safer...or leaving the scene altogether!

must say we have never been asked this, in all the times we have been to be checked.

I do get asked if I have long term or all different partners, think it's just to judge the level of risk? Although if you're married/together (I'm guessing with being a couple!) they may assume that you wouldn't have regular meets and that your other half is the long term partner? Does seem to vary though from clinic to clinic, and NHS Trust to NHS Trust too for some reason

must say we have never been asked this, in all the times we have been to be checked.

They start off by asking if I'm single married etc. I say I have a long term partner and they ask his ethnicity, is he bi/ has he ever had anal with another man, do we use protection.

Then goes on to the last three sexual encounters. If it was my long term partner they just write the date and LTP. If it wasn't they want to know their ethnicity, what types of activities there were and if it was protected. Hence the question 'was this one your long term partner'. There have been times when I haven't seen my partner for a couple of weeks and have had other meets or been to a club in between, so can easily fill up the last three encounters without getting to one that involved my partner.

I've not seen anyone say they go every week.

Results take two weeks to come back from the clinic I use so that would be rather silly!

I go every 3 months, or if something happened like a condom splitting I would probably wait a week (without playing with anyone else) then go get tested and tell them what had happened. Have done this but I was due to go anyway so it coincided with my usual visit. I did go straight to Boots for emergency contraception just in case.

I get checked every three months or so, depending on whether I've met anyone or not. I go to my local sexual health clinic, not my gp.

The first time I went after I started swinging I just told the truth - the nurse was faxcinated and I was in there for about an hour answering all her questions. Apparently I was the first person she'd had who had told her they were a swinger (what the rest of the swingers in my area tell them, I've no idea lol). She must've written something in my notes 'cos I've not needed to explain myself since then.

We get tested at our GUM clinic regularly. We were both totally honest about things - asked why we wanted our first, we both said because we were swingers. We were also asked how long for, and said for many years. R was asked if she enjoyed it by the health advisor and she said she absolutely loved it! They are very relaxed and non-judgmental about it and we always get given loads of condoms. They tried to get R to use a dental dam on her girlfriends and she said no thanks!

I'm not sure if this is relevant or not or true or not but what has occured to me is, if you visit your GP then the cause of your visit is recorded in your medical record so if you say went for an HIV test then you have to declare that when applying for insurance if asked. Or maybe that was in the past. I dunno maybe some of you wise sages out there may know better.

However, when you go to the GUM clinic there is no need for you to tell them your real name or any thing that can be linked back to you. Let's face it the activities we indulge in make us more liable to the risks involved so it is a good thing to do to get checked out now and again.

Thanks for comment. I suppose what I was trying to get across is that you can attend a GUM clinic in absolute confidence.

When I've been they just ask for your name and date or Birth and a contact telephone number if you want results by text. I suppose you could lie about the name as they don't check it or anything. The point I am also making is it is far better to attend a clinic now and again than just let it ride, keep your fingers crossed and play the ignorant card.

For my first visit the guy asked me when i'd last had sex with my wife (she was in the room for moral support) i said yesterday, he then asked if i'd had sex with anyone else? i said yes saturday, he asked if there'd been any other people? i said ermmmm yep that would be saturday again!!!! he's gone ahhhh you're swingers then lol

the second test i went for was a cute foreign doc/nurse/consultant, she's filling in details on a form then stops saying oops wrong form, holds up the form and pic of female bits and says you havent got one of these have you? i was a bit flummoxed but came out with 'well i have but it's at home!!!' lol

The GUM clinic I go to are very professional as they all are.....apart from last time when the nurse taking my notes said she was new and it might take a bit longer to fill the form in....

When we got to the bit where I said I was a swinger...she froze and said 'there's not a box for that on this form' !!

I just laughed and said ' better go and ask then'

So she did....!

I think it's ok to tell them everything at the GUM clinic if you feel comfortable with that, or tell them very little - lie if you feel shy. It makes no difference if you have had sex with 1 person or 50 if you are having the full suite of tests. In Brighton they offer the full works to everyone who comes in. The most important thing is that you are there and that you are being responsible enough to get tested, don't let the worry about being questioned stop you from going to get the check up.

I've always just used my real name and get results by text but reading the mentions of anonymity above I wonder - how does it work if the clinic needs to prescribe an antibiotic and they don't have access to your medical records re allergies etc?

Really don't know. When I go to my local clinic they give you a clipboard with a sheet of A4 on to fill in with name address date of birth name and address of GP (though you can tick a box to say you don't want your GP to be informed about your visit). I'm pretty sure that my results are linked to my NHS number. Maintaining anonymity sounds like more hassle than it's worth. Enjoying sex isn't illegal is it?

The GPs can only do some tests in Scotland so it's better to go to the GUM clinic, for all the tests.

You don't really need to say anything but if you have to I'd say you were entering a new relationship and like to be tested.

you don't. So that's why the only thing that matter is looking after yourself, making sure you know you are free of anything and always playing safe. Other people's sexual health is their business as long as you look after your own.

In Birmingham (not sure of elsewhere) you can give any name you like with a date of birth. No asking for GP info. Your address doesn't need giving (is an option). And all that can be done beforehand when booking. Results via text.

Exactly the point I was making! I look after me and treat all my meets with a certain level of caution, hence condoms and regular testing

I take noones word that they are clean but one porter on here clearly thinks regular testing is not important. My point was anyone who wants a meet with them is a fool.

My girth has had me split condoms until I found Skyn large and do I regularly, 6-8 weeks would visit the GUM clinic. I still do even now.

They are used to alsorts and it is kept in their files so your GP is unaware. I needed to do that as my GP is a family friend.

GUM have walk in as well as appointment and are very welcoming. The biggest challenge being peeing to order into a little pot ....

Like I said, someone else's sexual health status is not something anyone can trust maybe responsible for, you can only be responsible for your own.

I had my first visit to the gum clinic 4 weeks ago.... They were brilliant, made me feel comfortable, about talking about what I do

in fact the dr was so interested she asked me loads of questions and I even asked her if she wanted to have a look at my profile...she was really excited at looking at it

bless her !!!

I received my all clear results by text ... Lovely people who don't judge

There's no absolute guarantees about this.

All anyone can do is get themselves tested regularly, behave sensibly between tests and always practise safe sex.

You have no control over what anyone else does or has done, regardless of what they might say.

I go regularly, the staff are always friendly and relaxed....

Last time was lady doctor and older lady nurse.

I did chuckle when the doctor asked me to drop my trousers behind a curtain, sit on the bed, then she had a look at my tallywacker....which was ok by me...and the older nurse was peering over her shoulder! Tiny room, just us 3...and she made a fuss of pulling the curtain so I could zip up! Bless em!

Maybe they do a sweepstake on size ...hope she didn't put any money on mine!

We are tested every 28 days & know the hospital staff on first term names, we have been doing this for about 8 years...it was every 3 months before this & touch wood have never had an std in the 16yrs doing porn or swinging.

Having regular tests is very important as the test don't make you safe to do whatever but it can be used for data bases if an outbreak start.

We know lots of couples who go to the clinics so don't feel embarrassed xx.
