A no particular month, no particular topic, anything goes PDI thread.....shout out what you're most looking forward to, your favourite places in PDI, restaurants, clubs, whatever....or have a rant and get it off your chest, what don't you like out there?

We've missed the place so much...by the time we return, it will have been 2 years since our last holiday in GC....but we have 3 holidays booked already, to make up for it.

Looking forward to the weather, the first ice cold Tropical, the Pork Fillet at Los Porsches, checking out Studio 69 and catching up with old friends, as well as trying out the other new venues of course

Not looking forward to any testing, paperwork, or delays at the airport

Looking forward to stuffing myself silly, to the point I feel ill, at Wapa tapa and at Sakura teppanyaki.

Spending far too many nights in Cita.

And most importantly: cannot wait to be lying in the sun, butt naked, on a Tuesday afternoon, and having a nice buzz on instead of being sat at my desk while it's just grey outside my window

Salamanca Boom, over the bridge at Jardin del Sol. Great food. Not too expensive either.

Closed on Mondays but open the rest of the days, 13.00-16.00 then 19.00-23.00

Definitely recommend a pizza or plato kebab, either chicken or beef. Nom nom nom

I hear the EU have agreed to let in UK tourist with complete vaccinations, but now need to devise a system to check the validity of this status. They may require PCR tests regardless until a system is in place. They are hinting at some kind of announcement tomorrow...

For every glass half full, there's a glass half empty. As you know, I've expressed my scepticism, more so last year, in the early stages of the pandemic but things have definitely turned a corner(albeit a lot slower than anyone could have predicted) and I'm optimistic, to the extent that we've gone ahead and arranged 3 trips back to GC.

So the vaccine update. 900,000 jabs have been giving. It’s ramping up everyday. Yesterday we did just over 22,300 in one day. 290,000 are fully vaccinated. It’s been slow but the past 3 weeks it’s been getting better and better. They hopped to have 1,000,000 jabs before the end of May. That definitely will happen now, hopefully 1,100,000.

As i Said before we would always have the odd high days of infections. That’s happened the past few days. Nothing really to be worried about. Over all the numbers are in free fall. Just to think under 4 weeks ago. We have 4500 live cases. Today that’s down to only 2000.

Big thing for us last night was seeing hotels open at long last. The bull opened yesterday and RIU opens tomorrow. Bars are starting to reopen, the ones that have been open are now looking to start taking staff on. Over the Next 4 weeks the plan is to have a lot of the hotels reopen. 24th of June 60% are planning to open.

Locals are starting to go back to work in the hotels, some have been closed for 14 months now. They need a lot of work to get ready to open!

On Saturday the airport bus depot was packed with buses. Something not seen in 14 months.

Long way to go, but getting very very close now xx

San Fernando, Gran Canaria

The Council of the European Union has announced its decision to update the recommendation on restrictions for travel from third countries, which was first presented by the EU Commission on May 3.

In a press release, the Council explains that the Member States have agreed to allow more travellers from third countries to enter the block, in particular vaccinated travellers, who have been inoculated with a COVID-19 vaccine approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA), SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

“This amendment responds to the ongoing vaccination campaigns by introducing certain waivers for vaccinated persons and easing the criteria to lift restrictions for third countries,” the press release notes.

It also explains that the recommendation has been updated to take into account the possible risks that the new COVID-19 mutations pose, thus making available an emergency brake mechanism, through which the block and the Member States will be able to quickly react to the emergence of a variant of concern in a third country.

Through the amended recommendation, the Council advises the Member States to lift restrictions on non-essential travellers from third countries, who have received the full dose of an EMA approved vaccine at least two weeks before they enter the block.

Yesterday, an EU official had confirmed for SchengenVisaInfo.com that the leaders of the EU countries agreed on the reopening of the borders for more travellers from outside the block, as well as to open borders for travellers who have been fully inoculated against COVID-19.

Under the new rules, the Member States are urged to increase the threshold used to determine the list of epidemiologically safe third countries, travellers from which are permitted to enter the EU for non-essential purposes from 25 to 75 new COVID-19 cases per 100 000 inhabitants over the last fortnight.

“Other existing criteria continue to apply, including a stable or decreasing trend of new cases, the number of tests performed, a four per cent positivity rate among all tests carried out, the overall response to COVID-19 in the country and the reliability of the available information,” the Council explains.

It also notes that reciprocity should continue to be taken into account on a case-by-case basis, just as it is now taken into account for China, Hong Kong and Macao. The EU has placed the latter in the list of the epidemiologically safe third country, however, since they have shut the doors to European citizens, the EU also keeps the entry ban in place, thus applying reciprocity.

And finally, the Council reveals its plans to treat vaccination certificates of third-country citizens as equivalent to its digital green certificate as soon as the same is launched.

So are we good to go? Northern Ireland is permitting travel from 24th.....but when returning from a Green List country, you are required to have tests on day 2 and day 8, following your return...only 1 of which will be free. Different to England....why?

Why does anyone who has had two vaccinations need a test at all? It contradicts the whole idea of vaccinations in the first place.

My understanding is tests for the vaccinated are just a stopgap until a system is in place.

Because the vaccine isn’t 100% and no one wants new variants flying into their country. Plus the vaccine doesn’t stop you getting or transmitting the virus. A PCR test is the best way to make sure you’re virus free.

Vaccinations are the best solution we're going to get. So either the world needs to accept them as sufficient or forever be stuck with what we have now.

They do a great cortado or leche leche largo for a caffeine kick with some cheap churros.

Since the end of the State of Alarm the decline in infection rates has ceased throughout the whole of Spain. Here in the Canaries we have a situation where GC is doing really well with curbing infections but Tenerife is spoiling that data. Today for example there were 99 cases in Tenerife compared with 22 in GC. The entire municipality in which PDI is located has just 4 active cases.

While infection rates are somewhat higher, hospitalisations and Covid-19 related deaths are on the decrease.

As for vaccinations we have now hit the milestone of 50% target population having their first dose. The other day we got over 27 000 jabs done in one day. Vaccinations are no longer prioritised which speeds things up. It seems we are headed for 70% vaccination of target population by mid July.

Vaccinations aren't 100% effective. But PCR tests aren't either.

The argument for variants holds true for any new virus. On those grounds non essential travel should be permanently banned.

Vaccinations are the best solution we're going to get. So either the world needs to accept them as sufficient or forever be stuck with what we have now.

Any update on the day to day infection rates/vaccination rates?

"

Thankyou, UK has massive numbers vaccinated with 1 dose but now things aren't being relaxed until the numbers with 2 doses has been increased greatly. Infection rate up but(so far as I know) many less hospitalised....that has to be a positive. So impatient for it all to be over....as much as it ever will be over.

"Surely the finest restaurant on the island is either Lolas ( the sheep's neck is devine) or Carma Chiquas octopus or caviar bisque ...?

But most looking forward to seeing the hosts with the most ( that's you you two lovelies) xx"

I’m quite sure if I asked for an all day breakfast at Lolas I’d get thrown out sharpish! Booked in there for dinner tomorrow

So what's in the news today?

UK contemplates allowing fully vaccinated passengers returning from amber countries to forego quarantine....

Some of the airlines have now started legal proceedings to get the decision makers to give transparency to their traffic light system.

In Spain it has been announced that there will be an easing of restrictions with regards to wearing masks in open areas. When? Soon. (See mañana - meaning, tomorrow, next week, next month, next year and also... never)

And in other news epidemiologist have reportedly advised against travel to prevent the Delta variant from spreading in the UK.

And also 91% of all new cases are of the delta strain.

Matt Hancock reminds me of those thriller movies where the victim locks and bolts the doors once the killer is already inside the house...

Let's hope they get their eyes tested thoroughly at Durham Castle before looking at anything

I believe this may make the people currently not wishing to vaccinate rethink their perspective. All vaxxed up here and counting down the days. I even kinda started packing earlier, well, I wrote a list, that counts right?

The Spanish government have announced that the wearing of masks is no longer compulsory from Saturday 26 June 2021.

Good news for people on their way over soon and those already here.

Great start - only for outdoor spaces - will still require them in shops / restaurants until seated etc - but will making walking etc more bearable
