We have a rise in cases in the UK and another lockdown looms impacting on the hospitality industry as well as our economy!

We love GC like everyone else and gutted we can't go to help with their economy. Two holidays cancelled this year so far!

I read with astonishment how the desperation of some to get out there will travel from Tier 3 to Tier 1 areas to get flights.

Has anyone considered that they are spreading the virus across the UK and then taking it to GC?

Before you all start attacking me #bekind, I've lost family members to this awful virus! We have young friends who have tested positive with no symptoms!

So everyone let's start thinking what is really important in our lives!

That's the idea of people having to provide a negative test before they go. It will take for GC to ban us, for some people not to go

It will also depend if he advises not to travel abroad, or if he makes it law. If it's the former, people will still go.

I must say the Gov.uk page has not changed and is saying recommend against all bun not essential travel. "The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) currently advises British nationals against all but essential international travel."

This has not changed with the latest announcement.

It has been advised against since March...

But it would seem to follow that we should not be nipping off for a holiday..

Are people just selfish?

Do they have learning difficulties?

Or

Just no bloody common sense????

France, mainland Spain and Germany have lockdown, now England.

There's a reason for this?

I want to go away and escape the winter.

I have a chronic health condition that's affected by cold weather so winter sunshine helps me.

I miss dressing up, dancing in the clubs, meeting old and new friends, flirting, getting down and dirty with our European friends

but

I accept that to get things back to normal quickly I don't need to be told to not travel.

I listen to the news, five live debates, read reports, listen to the scientists and have worked out it's not safe to travel!

If you are so desperate, read my hashtags for ideas on how to get your fix!

100% agree with you OP. I don’t understand this obsession with having to get to GC at all costs. Don’t people have more important things to focus than a handful of days in the sun. It’s kinda scary. People will only stop this crazy pursuit once planes stop flying - guess they will start looking at ferries then!

Relax and get there next year.

Let me explain it to you then. If you are working from home and behind a laptop you have a choice. You can work under the umbrella of your warm garden and after work hang out in a relaxed bar till 2am. When you go for a shop it will be with laid back Canarians and there will be toilet paper on the shelves. You have a mimute chance of catching Covid-19 in PDI.

Or....

You could stare out the window into cold, probably drizzling weather. Be under lockdown. Queue to get into a shop only to find items sold out or restricted in number you can buy. Chances are much better for catching Covid-19. People here seem strung out and angry.

Weighing up where you'd rather be isn't necessarily an obsession. Travelling on a plane right now is probably safer than getting on the bus.

You miss my point but why am I not surprised.

YOU CAN CARRY THE VIRUS WITH NO SYMTOMS! I'd love to be there but do not want to infect others or be infected. They want you to test but you could pick it up after testing. Please revisit my hashtags if you need sexual relief or use fake tan. Stick the heating on and a beach scene on the TV. Let's all stay well and keep the island free of covid_19 to enjoy holidays next year. You don't count though as you've already been

I'm so glad I'm on the forums. 10 months of Covid-19 and I managed to avoid the fact people can be asymptomatic.

But by 14th November. A negative test will be required to go into tourist regulated accommodation.

You will know before you fly if you are virus free or not.

"But by 14th November. A negative test will be required to go into tourist regulated accommodation.

From tomorrow the small number of flights going to GC will be reduced to a trickle and then almost nothing.

So there will be a small number of people, an even smaller amount of them infected, and a smaller percentage of that percentage asymptomatic.

And as you point out from the 14th even that drops away.

OP, you start this thread with a request to be kind but then post further comment which can only be construed as being unkind to others with a differing view to yours.

We abide by the government restrictions. We also work in sectors where work loads have doubled through Covid and moved to an alien remote environment which has increased tensions and stresses. We are not irresponsible but we do need a holiday. We choose to go to GC when it is safe to do so and when their Government believe it is safe to allow tourism.

We were fortunate to be out there in september. The devastation to the local economy and to ordinary peoples lives was truly heartbreaking to see. We determined to return as soon as we could to do our bit. We were the last people out of la mirage before it closed for two weeks with no real idea of whether they would open again. Long serving staff were laid off, some were having to move house as they couldnt now afford the rent.

You may think that our approach and that of others is selfish and stupid. We do not. If we are to follow advice then surely that means if we are told its safe to go then that’s advice we can follow too.

Many people are suffering as a result of this virus both directly and indirectly. Some people need a holiday for a whole host of valid reasons relating to their mental and physical health. GC is ‘open’ and has the benefit of winter sun. Testing is being done before travel and whilst not perfect is in our view a proportionate approach.

Your original post was provocative and deserved a response. Please be alive to the fact that everyone’s circumstances are different. They are not necessarily selfish nor do they have learning difficulties. They may even have exercised a lot of their common sense!

My real reason for posting this response was that I see that despite your firm views in this post, you have posted some 12 hours ago on the ‘January 2021PDI,whose going’ thread, a thread you yourselves started whilst the virus was prevalent, that you are looking forward to meeting others out there in january. We calculate you will be on the island around 4 weeks after we leave. Will the virus have gone then? Do you know something we dont? To quote private eye.... i think we should be told! X

I really do sympathise with OPs view. I think we all love the island and the people on it. None of us want to see the virus spread there once again. None of us want to see a repeat of the very strict lockdowns they have just endured. So I think we all stand together on that one.

At the same time no one knows what is happening on the ground in the Canaries more than the Canarian government. Certainly not us. If a wave of tourists were bringing covid into the country then I am sure they would have simply prevented tourism. However, quite the converse has occurred. The Canarian government has all but pleaded to get tourists back on the island, even offering incentives to airlines. I think it is their decision to make not ours.

From a personal perspective I did not want to have my working holiday ruined prior to leaving in October and so practiced a regimen of isolation prior to leaving.

My post did not advocate orgies and gangbangs, but rather the enjoyment of working from a warm garden under an umbrella. The notion that there's a lot of meets going on in PDI right now is not accurate.

Right now GC has a low rate of infection, mainly in LP and mainly from work related transmission. PDI has an extremely low rate but has not abandoned vigilance which is something we in the UK could learn from.

I think the OP is very selfish sharing all these ideas but not letting us know where we can get the Black Friday deals

Joking aside, I do see part of their argument and support it, but equally there are some fantastic responses that I support too, so here’s my contribution.

1) I’ve also endorsed the Canary Islands, namely Gran Canaria and promoted the area of PDI/Maspalomas as a wonderful holiday resort to enjoy a holiday. I have never called it a swingers resort, but instead a holiday resort with a tolerant and liberal area in respect to the sexuality and lifestyle of people. Therefore our holidays here have never been swinger centric. It’s a holiday where we come to wind down and relax. And in all the times we’ve been here (and that’s quite a few) we can count on one hand the naughty fun we’ve had.

Based on the above, we have come to Gran Canaria with the exact same mentality as all of our visits, with the exception of acknowledging this is going to be a completely different holiday we are used to.

And this doesn’t mean from a swinging side. It means that our usual nights of loud music, socialising and mayhem with be swapped out with isolated occasions of enjoying warm weather, al fresco dining and long walks.

We’ve conceded there will be no naughty fun entertained, which is no different to us being in the UK and that’s fine. Do we miss this part of our life? Yes of course, but it is what it is.

We have come to the canaries, knowing we are going to be as safe, if not safer here than we are in the UK. So based on what the locals are doing in order to accommodate the tourists and make it welcoming and safe to save their livelihoods, we are more than comfortable to be here and conform to their rules (which also include walking the open streets with a mask on).

On the other side, we too know that we are coming here healthy and will not contaminate the islands efforts in making here as safe as possible.

Therefore, the risk is minimal. Eliminated no of course not, but minimal. We can only hope that tourists coming here if of the same mentality.

This is equally true every time I leave my house in the UK. Every trip has a level of risk, Covid or otherwise. But in relation to Covid, we are of the side that rules are there to be followed, not rules are there to be broken.

Now whilst our mental and physical health is strong and we are coping with 2020, we have taken the decision to have a holiday and practice what we can in minimising risk.

2) Will people swing during these times? Of course they will. There are many opinions around this pandemic. And whilst we choose to not be swinging left, right and centre, we can be sure that we are taking ourselves away from this environment to support our low risk approach to the current climate.

Personally, if people are going to swing, we would say swing in a small swinging bubble, like a swinging support bubble, for want of a better word. But that would heavily rely on all parties having a massive trust and understanding.

But to make it clear, we are not expecting to be part of any mass orgies in Gran Canaria. We will enjoy to continue the holiday in the same way we have enjoyed our first 6 days. Our health and well being feels much better for it.

3) Some members are supporting the come back next year and enjoy. There’s a strong chance that next year will not be the same here. Like everywhere in the world, businesses are struggling. Unlike the UK where we’ve had government support (granted it’ll be payback in years and years to come). Businesses here have had no support. Not even subsidised utility rates of nothing. They really have struggled. A small plot in the yumbo center costs €8000 per month in rent. When you include bills, staffing costs, materials etcetera, you can appreciate how many covers per day they need to break even. The footfall is nowhere close to make the numbers balance. Our contribution is a drop in the ocean and the place certainly needs more.

I’m sure it’s the same for everywhere, but today PDI has my sympathy especially in the fact businesses and the government here have gone through time and expense to minimise risk and save their livelihoods, and could all be in vain.

To conclude, I’m supporting the don’t spread the virus to GC. And I hope by the time Lockdown 2 has finished, there will be further measures in place and development to ensure tourists come to GC with no Covid health risks, and can continue to enjoy a holiday in a way they like to enjoy one.

Right. I’m off for a wank

Stay safe peeps x

Spelling errors aren't important. Enjoying your time on the island is important . It's a good posting. Have a great relaxing time, enjoy the sun and the relatively safe environment.

Well done for supporting the locals

"OP, you start this thread with a request to be kind but then post further comment which can only be construed as being unkind to others with a differing view to yours.

The post for our January holiday was done prior to the second wave and we were optimistic about getting a holiday, support the economy, finally socialise with old friends and make new friends. Things changed and we cannot remove that post. We will change the date of the holiday if things remain the same.

We are relieved TUI cancelled our holiday so we could get a refund as we would have not taken the risk to travel.

Everyone has a choice what to do but personally yes I think there's an element of selfishness.

Some of my comments have been due to responses that have not understood my point. I usually get ignored with polite posts and notice the provocative posts get conversation flowing.

I need to stop being selfish and find out about the Black Friday offers though

I usually get ignored when I do polite posts so want to thank everyone for responding.

I can now resume back to my friendly and reserved disposition.

Have a great holiday everyone and stay safe

PS: I don't think this is the forum for Black Friday deals but I'll do some research and direct message you

Lol Please let us know Nell.

TBH Nell, it was a good post because I think it’s important to have “elephant in the room” conversations like this.

As you know, everyone has a swinging journey and everyone now has a Covid journey, and it’s important to air these views to the fence sitters so they can make up their minds.

We are now a week into our vacation. We have treated PDI with the respect it deserves and have conformed to local guidelines, whilst adding our personal measures to keep ourselves safe.

We’ve discovered areas and places that we would overlook in normal holidays here.

To date, we have had a fantastic safe time and although the odd night finishing at 12-1am we have felt like we could party a little more, it’s been refreshing to take 2/3 hours of drinking and partying time off the agenda, and discover something called the morning (apparently it lasts until 11:59).

We have certainly got more value from our time here than in previous years.

We’ve had a great time in Maclennans, soaking up the sport and fantastic mojitos and daiquiris.

And we’ve yet to visit a club. We’ve had many a great safe night in the Imagine Bar where Saskia and Tonny have looked after us.

They even have a gun to shoot us with every time we walk in (obviously we’re not as hot as I thought we were)

We even learned that the miserable one called Tonny (who we have never found miserable personally) makes a mean gourmet burger. We’ll write a post for this soon.

But we have had a great time and it’s exceeded our expectations. The difference being you start your night earlier, finish your night earlier, enjoy more of the day and it can be done in a very low risk way.

With our new hindsight, we have no hesitation for booking next year if we have to have a holiday similar to this one.

We would love a holiday in PDI but holding on until better times

We live in Bournemouth Poole area

Since the August bank holiday we have been invaded buy many holiday makers lots for tier 3 areas who should not leave their area .

Our numbers were very very low till August now we have many cases of the virus like rest of UK

I'm sure all thought they was doing no harm having a holiday Which they really need and deserve but when they go home we are left with increased numbers locally

I think GC may find the same x

It's been on the news over the last couple of days and newspapers on line. It's regarding the lockdown in England. Any breaking of any Covid rules/laws can potentially attract a fine, this banning of travelling for holidays, is no different. I don't know what's happening in the other countries of the UK, as that doesn't affect me, you would have to check that one.

If you are trying to bend the rules then you shouldn’t really be doing it in the first place. I believe it’s quite irresponsible to encourage people to do so and I believe breaks Fab rules anyway. But hey I suppose everyone is doing their bit.

There is always a way to get round a ban on travel, there are valid reasons too..I guess you would have to show some kind of evidence for your travel, like a dental appointment card?

If you are trying to bend the rules then you shouldn’t really be doing it in the first place. I believe it’s quite irresponsible to encourage people to do so and I believe breaks Fab rules anyway. But hey I suppose everyone is doing their bit.

That was in response to someone else saying there is a way round it. I was discouraging breaking the rules, not encouraging!

Ah right.... errr ok but it appeared you were suggesting an excuse then smiling at making the suggestion. Obviously it can be seen differently to what you intended.

So basically you are saying you shouldn’t be trying to bend the rules.

Still not sure what there is to smile about though. Don’t think my humour is the same as others.

I'm not sure if you've read the whole thread..someone else suggested you could go for dental treatment, which I found amusing and suggested they take their dental appointment card for proof! Yes I'm saying don't break the rules, non essential travel is bannned!

Good I’m glad you have now made that clear.

Yes I have read the whole post but your comment could have been read as encouraging it. Sometimes the written word can be interpreted in different ways. Glad you aren’t."

Yes meaning can definitely be mis construed in the forum's it's all down to interpretation.

Arrived in PDI today after flying BA from Heathrow.

Wasn't challenged at any stage of the journey. The plane was quite full except for business class which only had four occupants. Business lounge was closed and the plane filled from the back so priority bording got in last. So the only real benifit was the baggage allowance which we needed since we needed to bring an entire office, documentation, plus tools.

Checked into our hotel with nothing but a warm welcome. The guy at reception said they were half full, not overloaded but not deserted either.

In October I posted that I was headed back here for business and would need a revolving door at Gatwick.

It's business that is very urgent and also needs to be done face to face. So it waa always on the cards.

I am still with OP on this. People really are obsessed with the place. PDI/Maspalomas isn’t really 5* and is actually bland and in areas run down and shabby. And yes I do know it, I lived there for 7 years, as much as I love it, it really is ‘kiss me quick’ sort of era. Relax and go back next year - there are places in the UK that need your ‘support’ too

Well as I posted earlier the Act specificies reasons that are acceptable for leaving the home. Acting like a yob in 600 strong protest wasn't one of them. Hurting officers also not one of them.

Going on holiday was not part of the legislation. It just doesn't fall into one of the reasons for leaving the home. Hence my post. Why is all the focus on people going on holiday whilst we ignore the people causing 25000 new infections every day? Perhaps it has more to do with the green-eyed monster and less to do with moral outrage.

I haven’t read about the issues in Manchester but will do so once I’m at my desk top. Agreed that it’s totally unacceptable. We’ve cancelled three holidays this year as we couldn’t justify them as being essential travel in the current climate. I guess everyone has their own opinion as to what they consider to be essential. No “Green Eyed” monsters here. We make our own decisions based on the information we glean. Maybe next year we’ll be back in the Canaries, or Corfu or Cornwall.

Don’t think it has anything to do with green eyed monsters. You can’t compare civil unrest in tinder box Manchester to the desperate/at all costs 7 days in the sun.

I think that was his point Samiss. You couldn't go there at the time for this lifestyle so find somewhere else which is more attractive and 5* standard.

We have found if you venture outside of PDI area there is some spectacular scenery to be found and is not so commercialised. Hence why we go there for a holiday first and lifestyle second.

Hope you are keeping well my friend x
