Or even worse, Ed Milliband." Who would replace Starmer really is the issue. As useless as he is there isn't a big field of potential successors Rayner may be popular with some of the more left leaning grass roots members but the Brighton flat scandal just won't go away. Burnham is also quite popular and would be more user friendly than some of the others but he's not even an MP. Finding a "Safe" Labour seat for him won't be easy and if that bye election did happen the media circus would have Farage licking his lips. Streeting is doing his best to keep his hands clean and would probably get enough support from the parliamentary party. But he comes across as very lightweight in the charisma stakes and would almost certainly be beaten by Milliband in the final members vote. Which leads us to Milliband himself who I actually think would win if a leadership contest happened today. Firstly it would lead Britain into uncharted territory. We've had plenty of mid parliament leadership (PM) changes over the years, not least with the last government, but never has a defeated former party leader made such a comeback. He really would become the ultimate "back door Prime Minister". Because of the size of the Labour majority he would probably cling on to power for a while but I don't see him going full term. Trying to last 3+ years without his own mandate would be more damaging to Labour than sticking with Starmer. It's stick or twist while in a full on "rock and hard place" for Labour. | |||

I am by no means close to Reform, but it is likely that for example the DTI will be headed up by Anthony Bamford, and that idea had been openly floated by Zia Yusuf. I also very much doubt that Reform would want an early election. They aren't ready. Next May's local elections offer them the chance to have elected and then blood potential ministers ahead of a GE that is still 3 years away. Should Ant Middleton win the London mayoral election (which I doubt he will), then he'd be a prime candidate for Defence Secretary. After all, who'd have thought that a failed junior bank complaints handler would make a great Chancellor? | |||

Yes probably qualifies as strong speculation especially as both the chancellor and PM refused to rule out an income tax rise when questioned on it several times. Surely if they were not strongly considering it they could have simply ruled it out when asked. Most people exaggerates their CV a bit. It's almost standard practice. But although I don't like her at all, she does have a brain. It's not routine for someone who goes to a comprehensive school to get four grade As at A-level in mathematics, further mathematics, economics and politics and to be the Britsh under 14's girls champion at chess. I'm not a Labour supporter but some of the attacks on this government seem to lack perspective - as if Starmer is some kind of communist when in reality he is pretty much like John Major. | |||
