Self scan checkouts.

These do not exist in Kazakhstan. What does exist in supermarkets there is a lack of trust at all levels, which mirrors society in general. When you go to a checkout, they will routinely open all boxes of toothpaste and cosmetics, to ensure that the current item is on there. It feels like a casino with pit bosses - if they handle large amounts of cash, they show it to their supervisor. Bags are checked at the front.

Upon returning to the UK and using a self scan checkout (and yes, they're if still fraud with these), it's possible to wonder why it works in the UK, but not ex-soviet countries. The answer is a social contract and sense of right and wrong that cannot be taken for granted. Perhaps it's not perfect, but it's definitely alright.

Having travelled extensively throughout the UK I have never ever witnessed this in any supermarkets

Well this post has been up for 14 hours and the single thing that makes you proud to be English is the self service checkouts in supermarkets

Didn't have that on my bingo card

So, does anyone feel pride to be English and what gives you that sense of pride?

Fwiw I'm a Welsh European, and as much as I love my 'hiraeth' I am deeply ashamed of the way my part of the world has evolved. A complete lack of civic pride and mismanagement of resources has turned it into a litter strewn zombie inhabited shit hole. I am embarrassed to bring my children there to visit their relatives.

I was born here and I live here but I wouldn't describe my attitude to Britain or to my Britishness as "pride". There's lots to like about it and I'm happy I'm here to enjoy those things, from the Beatles to the Lake District and so on. I've also lived in another country and I've been to lots of others and all of them have things that are unique and cool about them.

I think the 2012 Olympic opening ceremony, directed by Danny Boyle, covered a lot of ground about what makes England (or more accurately the UK) a great place.

For such a small country we've also been surprisingly good at creativity in the arts, sciences, technology etc.

I won't be negative, in the sense of knocking anyone else's pride in their nationality. That's purely for them.

But for myself ? Nothing. I guess I'm quite pragmatic in the sense that I'm just a collection of atoms in a meat-popsicle. Anything else slathered on top of that is entirely man-made and artificial. I try and look beyond the artificial, and consider the human first, not where they are from. Which is why I'm probably more aligned to humanism.
