Tories are getting things wrong, Labour are going to wheel out their last dismal prime minister to state the bleeding obvious.

The truth is that Labour will harp on now because the tories are innefectual, then the next PM will come in and make some changes that will make labour look right all along.

Sounds like politics to me.

Neither of them can do anything. Nor can the rest of the Tory party. Johnson is off on holiday and the government are paralysed.

He's fucking his own party over because they fucked him over

"Winter is coming "

It's going to get worse, a lot worse.

As long as Russia keeps being stupid, the price of oil and enegery will keep rising, which affects most things.

We need the Saudis to flood the market which will drop the oil price, but they won't, because they are making Megabucks on current prices.

Our govt can intervene with help, but that doesn't solve the problem (which will keep getting worse)

Gordon is right though, extra help is needed.

But where does the cash come from?

We've spend billions on Covid, Truss is going to reverse the NI rise, so the NHS needs the funding from elsewhere.

The cost of govt borrowing is increasing because of interest rates.

But it could be worse, we could be in Sri Lanka!

In fairness, The PM (even one who is a lame duck) doesn't get a real holiday. There are still daily or more frequent briefings and so on.

Gordon Brown protected the foundations of this nation in 2009 by bailing out the banks. His reward was to be accused of wasting money by the Tory right and his term in office was cut short.

The vilification that he gets is completely unjustified because in the face of a National crisis, he spent money to prevent a National disaster. The parallels today are similar other than ordinary people are not faced with the indirect consequences of a total collapse of the UK banking system and instead they are faced with the direct consequences of soaring inflation and energy prices.

This Government could intervene and protect ordinary people by bailing them out, or forcing the energy companies to take the hit even if it does make them go out of business. There is no risk to ordinary people if the energy companies go bust like there was if the whole banking sector had failed.

He didn’t have much foresight when selling off the nations gold.. and those who can’t afford to feed themselves should not expect tax payers to fund their pet ownership… #misplacedpriorities

Was he not Chancellor when Tony Blair announced that this country needs to reduce reliance on pariah states and introduced the term "Energy Security" in 2006?

Didn't that government, both Blair then Brown, not kick Renewables, Nuclear and Wind down the road for many years and failed all investment to bolster our energy system to reduce reliance on fossil fuels of all kinds?

They all presided over the removal of our own Gas storage facilities and never once questioned the effects of living hand to mouth in a crises.

Neither Blair, Brown, Cameron or May did a single thing to protect this country and today we stare down the barrel of people literally dying this coming Winter.

They've allowed houses to continue to be built with badly specified insulation, meaning even houses built today are not to standard. They allowed a house builders to avoid 'building in' Renewables and Storage where technologies available for years could reduce energy reliance by 80%-90%.

They've all allowed businesses units, industrial estates, shopping centres to be built with no legal requirements that the roof area be utilised to provide its own and exported energy.

Only ALDI have actively fitted Solar to their roofs, not to savevtge planet but to reduce running costs by providing their own. Google Earth your local ASDA, Sainsburys, Tesco and your local retail park and see the lack of Solar panels. A complete waste of money earning, climate saving roofspace.

They have all failed and broken UK Energy which is why 50% of our electricity is based on Gas and why we face £4,700 energy bills.

Over the last few weeks:

----

Head teacher on Radio 4 whose annual energy bill has risen from £40K per year to £150K. I've looked at the school, his roof is big enough to accommodate 250kwh Solar.

A school near me, claims they spent £75,000 on improvements during COVID due to kids being at home and lights, computers and heating was off. They should be ashamed at statements like that, their roof is big enough for 400kwhs Solar.

----

Hospice in the South, brand new building from charity donations now facing removal of critical services due to energy bill increases. Their roof is big enough to hold 350kwh of Solar. In relation to the cost of the build, Solar would be peanuts.

----

Government buildings with large unused roof space and not a single Solar Panel. The government, local councils would drastically reduce energy bills and money saved used elsewhere. Our local court's roof is massive, yet they sit inside with lights and computers on lining the pockets of energy companies.

Why? - over production could be sold and reduce LGO energy bills, giving better value to taxpayers, reduce demand and help the price of bills to everyone.

Not much done since 2006? Blair and Brown had the chance to change it many years ago.

As said above, Gordon Brown the man who sold 56% of the UK gold reserves for $3.5 billion and considered a low point in British history. He even thought the Euro would generate a better return than gold!

never mind gold .... the losses from underselling during the privatisation of the various nationalised industries by the conservative and unionist party dwarf those of the gold sale into absolute insignificance, and the losses continue whereas the losses from the gold sale don't.

Yes. Gordon Brown did more to protect ordinary people than any Prime Minister since he left office.

Successive Conservative Prime Ministers have destroyed the U.K. economy, placed the NHS into intensive care and now laugh as inflation and energy prices threaten to place tens of millions into poverty.

Gordon Brown (and Tony Blair for that matter) would not be letting this happen to ordinary people.

Do not mention the greed of the labour party eating out of the financial troth of zombie banking practices and the 1% paying 30% of the tax burden which they tell you with joy.

The bank bailout was when labour held office of government, and now the tories are bailing out the energy companies at a dizzying height of £50 notes kilometres high.

"Are you serious ?"

Bailing out the banks prevented a run and likely collapse of numerous banking, insurance and financial institutions. The indirect of such a collapse in the United Kingdom would have resulted in a recession that we would likely still be in today. The United Kingdom would have effectively shifted from a primary global centre for finance to a third rate economy that struggled to pay its debts. An IMF loan would have been inevitable and the country would have taken decades to recover.

Gordon Brown stopped that happening. He protected ordinary people from the indirect consequences of economic disaster and all that would have gone with that.

Subsequently, the bailout loans were all repaid with interest.

So you are in denial about Gordon Brown selling off 56% of the UK's gold reserves. A point of which is a fact and not fiction.

The only falsehood is your statement.

Central

Don't know the detail but sometimes the bleeding obvious is absent from public discourse.

The UK deserves far better than a zombie government doing next to nothing at such a critical point.

We'll pay more dearly for not doing the right things now. Every politician should be very vocal about things being done against the national interest
