Somewhere In The Ether…

Following on from the Rock/Metal vocalists thread; As the Bible, clearly tells us, Matthew 4.4: ‘Man and Woman cannot live on Heavy Metal alone’, and with this in mind, may I therefore pose unto you the following question:

Who are your favourite soul singers, both male and female of all time?

As in the previous thread, I’ll award extra kudos and an exclusive signed poster of the Boyband messiah himself, Nathan Moore from Brother Beyond to anyone who mentions and sings the praises of those criminally unsung soul vocalists that have left their mark on the genre over the years.

Off you go folks

For a great unsung soul singer, the late Bobby Smith who sang with The Spinners was amazing (Yay! I get to keep my Nathan Moore autograph after all)

General Johnson from Chairmen of the Board had a wonderfully unique and soulful voice.

Plus Marvin Gaye and Gil Scott-Heron

Female voices: Aretha Franklin, Billie Holiday and Dionne Warwick.

I love Sam Cooke but have to say that Solomon Burke takes some beating and I've always loved Mavis Staples'voice (although might be considered more gospel)

"I love Sam Cooke but have to say that Solomon Burke takes some beating."

Not the best choice of words when one is talking about Sam Cooke!

James brown for me, went from gospel to r&b to soul and then the funk, all effortlessly .

Tough one choosing a lady , but it has to be either Aretha, or on a little jazz side Ella Fitzgerald

Somewhere In The Ether…

It’s so sad that so many of these amazing singers are no longer with us so I encourage everyone, if you see a name mentioned here that you’re unfamiliar with, look them up and have a listen to them - some absolutely amazing vocalists have been listed; thank you everyone so far

I'm gonna throw in Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes to bring things up to date. Although I was listening to a bit of Nina Simone last night and she's timeless.

I was gonna add Brittany Howard. Absolutely love her (although have to say the solo stuff isn't anywhere near as good as alabama shakes imo unfortunately). Amazing singer and incredibly cool

Is the soul singer category going to have the usual blurred lines in to Blues & R&B (proper R&B- not that modern R'n'B shite riding its coat tails)

If so, have a little Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, Solomon Burke and Screamin Jay Hawkins for your musical pot of awesomeness!
