What was the purpose of sending troops to Afghanistan and should they now be withdrawn

Did the government ever tell us why they sent ground troops to Afghanistan other than to fight the war on terror?

Think they did throw in.. it was to stop terrorist training camps personally i dont understand why a small reconnaicence speacial forces wernt sent in to mark the camps and then call in a few jets the blow them up. save needless deaths of our ground troops and save billions of pounds in these times of financial need in sending in ground troops.

From what i hear from 1 soildier there badly kitted out and at the beggining they would secure one area only to then have to go back to there compund headquarters due to a lack of resources and other soildiers to claim the ground they just won.. and next day the taliban would come back and take back the area ..As there are no more al qiada camps in afghanistan anymore ..they all moved to our err brothers in arms pakistan ..it all seems completley futile and pointless to me and as such feel that our troops should come home. speacailly when our own prime minister is possibly funding the taliban who from what ive heard on programmes seem to be mostly pakistani or pakistani uk nationals with our taxes in internation aide to Pakistan?

Personally I think a war on terror and the attempt to liberate an oppressed people is a noble cause.

On the issue of leaving, I think it's quite complex. There are many factors but here are some that I think are quite key:

Afghanistan got into a mess when we left them after helping them overthrow the old communist regime in charge there, so we are now weary of repeating that mistake.

Power hasn't been consolidated and we don't have control of the whole of Afghanistan. Upon leaving there will be a massive power vacuum and the current regime is not prepared to deal with it.

Conversely, it is almost impossible to have full control of Afghanistan, it has been that way for centuries. Many have attempted and many have failed. The tribal nature of the inhabitants makes it very difficult.

nope no oil in Afghanistan, or gas for that matter.

It can be argued to some extent that stability is required in that region to build a gas pipeline from the Caspian sea to Pakistan and India and that this was an ulterior motive.

However, until I see evidence I choose to ignore conspiracy theories, especially considering the most popular one is the utter nonsense that the moon landing was faked.

I've got no idea about it being faked but photos from two trips to different areas of the moon seem to show the same background...As for the OP,you know what,i can't remember why we're there. It seems to have got jumbled up with other stuff. Our boys do a great job but whether I think we should still be there is another matter.

It is handily close to Pakistan for the Yanks tho

Theres also the fact that the exact position of the landing is well known, no one can see the landing module via telescope.... should be easily viewable. Also during the film footage there are clearly shadows from craters falling in different directions.... from film lighting spread around....if the only light source was the sun....the shadows should all uniformly fall in one direction xxx

Firstly, there is a bar behind the flag a bit like a curtain rail. You can tell it's there by looking at the pictures.

Now about the gravity, gravity isn't what makes something "wave" its wind or as was the case on the moon the momentum of the astronaut planting and twisting the flag into the surface. In the absence of an atmosphere, i.e. a vacuum, the flag would continue to wave for a significant amount of time as there's no atmosphere to slow it down.

Armstrong likes his privacy and did so before the space flights. He is a private man who always avoids publicity.

Besides do you think the Russians wouldn't have jumped at the opportunity to embarrass the Americans if it was all a sham? We all know they would have loved to do so.

This is one of the funniest thread-meanderings I've ever seen. From why our troops are in Afghanistan to faking the moon landings - priceless

As for Afghanistan, I believe we are only there because the Yanks told us we had to be there. Best of luck to all who are there against their will.

Moon landings - I believe the first one was faked because of propaganda reasons, and that the second one was a success and it was them who put the flag in place.

No telescope on Earth or in space has that kind of resolving power. Even with the biggest telescope on Earth, the smallest thing you can see on the surface of the moon is something bigger than a house.

There are however pictures of the lunar modules on the NASA website taken by a lunar reconnaissance orbiter.

"nope no oil in Afghanistan, or gas for that matter.

It can be argued to some extent that stability is required in that region to build a gas pipeline from the Caspian sea to Pakistan and India and that this was an ulterior motive.

However, until I see evidence I choose to ignore conspiracy theories, especially considering the most popular one is the utter nonsense that the moon landing was faked.

okay goin of thread theres no gravity on the moon in the footage of them planting the usa flag how come its blowing in the wind... with the advance of technology since.. how come no ones ever gone back to the moon ..just a thought

Erm... hate to point out the obvious flaw in your arguement but... 12 guys actually walked on the moon, meaning not only did "we" go back, but "we" went back a few times!! "

well hey its a free forum were all entiled to our opinions i wasnt aware i was seeking an argument just enlightenment and giving my opinion as others give theres be that in agreement or not.....personally i tend to base belief in facts rather than someone telling me so someone once told me they met god at a car boot sale but i didnt buy what they were selling.

"Who's to say Bin Laden is really dead? No photos of his bullet riddled corpse have been released yet we all saw the photos of Saddam hanging.

I reckon Bin Laden did a deal with the Yanks and is now living in Connecticut as a waitress for KFC."

funnily enough there's a programme on itv tonight called 'The hunt for bin laden. Its on from 9 til 11

Which is ironic

"purpose = secure oil & lick USA ass. We can get troops out now as we have got very good oil contracts. Just need to keep the pipeline building safe.

I might be wrong here but i dont think theres oil in afghanistan if you mean Iraq and tony blairs bull on wmd as reason to invade and try and nick there oil with bush then yeah i def agree with you there.. they tell us its to remove dictators (iraq) taliban (afghanistan) for regime change given that ...How come mugabes still in power in zimbabwae then ?? ...oh i no oil in those there hills ..still i dont think there is oil in afghanistan but i could be wrong on that.

ERM , COPPER , GOLD, IRON , COBOLT ... etc etc , Afganistan/s got trillions of tons of minerals . and is the next richest country in reservese's to be raped of them ...... "
