I love too many of them, even the old black and white the longest day.

I just rewatched all of bands of brothers so that's my favorite right now.

If you need a bit of a chuckle and different take though, Air America is a war movie based on true events. Robert Downey and Mel Gibson.

"Beast of War" is amazing, even if you're not a massive war buff. It's more about loyalty, betrayal and fate. Absolute masterpiece of cinema. Everyone I've showed it too loved it.

If you want something really gritty then Cross of Iron would be my recommendation.

I think you may be misinterpreting what appreciation of a war movie is and isn’t - it certainly isn’t mutually exclusive to having respect for those that serve or condemnation and compassion for the atrocities of war. Let’s not be unnecessarily judgemental or assumptive shall we?

The documentary and the book are excellent. The film does them adequate service.

Kelly's Heroes is The Italian Job with tanks. TKM just adapted his screenplay.

Not strictly a war film - but Crimson Tide is really good.

Again, not a film, but Generation Kill is as good as Band of Brothers.

Glory - American Civil War film about a black regiment

In Which We Serve/The Cruel Sea - both excellent sea warfare films

The Battle Of Britain - air battles without CGI

Midway - the original version, very intense

The Colditz Story - Boys Own escapism

Phone on silent, lock the door, lights off- drinks and nibbles ready so you can immerse yourself in close on 4 hrs of possibly the best and most tense film ever made.

Then if you're not too wiped out by that- Letters from Iwo Jima/ Flags of our Fathers (preferably in that order as i found it made more sense that way)

Based on the battle for the island of Iwo Jima, between Japan and America in WW2 and told from the perspective of each side...both directed by Clint Eastwood- which should be enough of a reason to binge on a further 4 1/2 hours of cinematic greatness.

If you're after even more entertainment, while not a war film as such- The Motorcycle Diaries covers the early life of Che Guevara and what inspired him to become a revolutionary in Cuba

I absolutely agree - a terrific film. Another one that is not very well known is Hyena Road - a Canadian film set in Afghanistan.

Kelly's heroes is great fun. Anything with Donald Sutherland as an acid addled rogue tank commander before acid was invented is always pretty amusing in my book.

Paths of glory is a bit of a masterpiece.

Thin red line is beaufifully shot. If only I could work out what is going on..

I recommend Kajaki with a warning of its intensity - it left me feeling numb and quite morose for a good hour after I watched it too.

A few posters have mentioned ones I forgot, Generation Kill is excellent and Lone Survivor! I've become much more of a spotter since joining the army myself, it's easy to pick holes in the ones who clearly haven't had time served military advisors on the production team.

Bravo Two Zero with Sean Bean is decent as well, there's a scene where they do a proper pepper potting section attack which you don't see often in war films, but is taught and rehearsed constantly in teeth arms units in the British army (and it's an absolute lick to do!!)

One missed I think that made an impression on me as a kid was Wild Geese. Mercenaries in Africa. Impressive cast, rarely mentioned. Loved the title theme track too.

Best submarine drama ever. The BBC did the six hour version, in six parts, when they first showed it.

It's an accurate reflection of the book.

The latest telly series was ok - but only the bits on the U-boat were worth the watching.

Band of Brothers is epic. I went on to read the books from Dick Winters, Don Malarkey, Bill Guarnere + Babe Heffron (jointly authored) and Stephen Ambrose. Don Malarkey passed away relatively recently. Stephen Ambrose’s son wrote The Pacific, but that didn’t have the same continuity of Band of Brothers because it couldn’t follow one company/group of characters from start to finish.

Or at ATR Bassingbourne where I did my basic training. Checkout the road signs on camp at start of the film.. all UK style. It was cheaper to fly whole cast and crew out and film it here than in the US.

yeah, I found it not fully successful. Characters/dialogue mostly paper-thin, and a lot of clichés I'd like to have thought the producers, writers et al were well beyond..

but the cinematography, holy shit. For me it felt like the most 'realistic' I've seen [which is someone who's never held a gun]

[as in in an immersive virtual-reality way - obviously actual footage ye see on liveleak et al is realistic because it's Real - but it's that's not 'tailored' in such a direct or attract yr attention]

I read Luttrell's book, and that was worse than the film, as in less 'enjoyable'.

Do you think he's full of shit? There're big discrepancies within his own text
