Hello Fab Hive-Mind (again)

I’ve met someone who wants to explore Shibari. What’s the best way of starting, and does anyone have any hints / tips / manuals / experiences to share to help us on our way?

Thank you!

Joe xx

FL local area workshops

YouTube videos

These are the best ways of learning but to be fair just lots and lots of practice and trying things out. You can practice on yourself, on your legs, arms and wrists for some basic stuff.

I know in my City there is a rope group that meet now and then. Maybe there is one near you too? You and the other person could attend together? Failing that a local Munch maybe a good place to meet people with knowledge and skills. Don't worry about being a beginner, half the fun is learning how to do it together with your Guinea pig.... I mean partner. Just do some research (especially the safety side), get some good paramedic scissors and have a play. You won't get it right first everytime but as long as safety is your main concern then is just a matter of practice. Start of with basic ties first, totally put aside the more complex stuff for now, that will come in time. In fact that practice on your subject in itself is a very nice bonding experience.

Oh and as others have said there are some good videos on YouTube (and some not so good/safe).

Another vote for YouTube. And there’s some good specialist websites about.

We love to play with rope! Fuzz is self taught through YouTube videos mainly. Lots of practise, lots of patience and lots of rope is needed! And don't forget the safety scissors!

Stoke area

Contact your nearest club and see if they have fetish sessions or can point you to someone or a group who does ropework.

I am very conscious of the safety aspect, so would recommend having some sessions in person, rather than YouTube or books initially.

Good riggers make the entire thing an experience by playing with the sensations of the rope against the skin, carressing you as they do and holding you in a variety of intimate ways as they tie and untie you.

Sorry to be Shibari police, but clearly only if negotiated before.

OP it is worth looking to see if the Peer Ropes are running in Edingburgh and or Glasgow. Edingburgh is the base for two top riggers.

Personally for me rope is all about sensation, otherwise you get bored bunny syndrome.

In terms of learning 1 to 1 with an experience rigger can't be beaten.

For economy peer rope and workshops.

Books and you tube are good and there are several books out there, but I would suggest they are used with guidance.

I have their second book, which is ok. I prefer;

Shibari you can Use by Lee Harrington

but my personal preference for ease of learning and good diagrams / instructions is;

Essence of Shibari by Shin Nawakiri
