I did a fun experiment. I filled up a 2 litre cola bottle with sand and it feels alot heavier, it feels like it is about 7kgs, how come it feels heavier, is it cos of density and how much would it weigh?

There are far more interesting experiments. Try buying a chemistry set.

Not at all - you can have a litre of a solid or a gas aswell as a liquid..... I think OP had some the issues with particle size and density....

I know, not sure you undestood it there, the example was of an empty 2 litre bottle which you then filled up with sand so yes it would be measured in kgs then.

With sand, as with any granular or powdered material you have density and bulk density. The density of a single grain is different to the overall density of a large amount of them.

Some can be compressed so almost no volume will be between the particles. The volume decreases, but the mass stays the same ergo the density increases.

The molecular weight of the silicates in the sand remain the same though.

Try using lead, mercury or gold. More expensive but your weights will be smaller!

Freezing something only affects it's volume. In the case of water, the volume increases (quite rare in physics). As the volume increases but the mass remains the same, the density has decreased. That's why ice floats on water.

I think I read something somewhere once that water is the only thing that increases in volume in the transition from a liquid to a solid...

I'm quite enjoying this topic BTW..

That's what I was taught years ago, though something else might have been discovered by now that does the same.

Apparently Antimony and Bismuth increase when frozen. Gallium is liquid at 30oc but when being transported, the vessels have to have room in them to allow for expansion if the temperature drops too far below and it freezes.

Weight is all about specific gravity of the item you are weighing

I Kg was originally based on 1 litre of water

Thus if sand dry has a sg rating of 2.65

It should weigh 2.65kgs

Simple

This 2 litres of sand should equal

5.3 LG’s

Sand does vary

But it has an approximate sg rating of 2.65

That is right as different sand weghs differently, like some beach sand is heavier than normal sand

You can google anything...and get several hundred answers.

Unfortunately you still need some modicum of education, experience, common sense and logic to be able to decide on a correct answer.

It really does show too in this thread. It's a scary reflection on society when everyone is a google expert, yet they only know the copy and pasted words and have no true understanding or education on a subject.

Gravitational force is equal to all irrespective of mass, however it works differently on board surface area (unfolded paper will take longer time, but if same paper is folded will fall fast)

How do they know there are actually more stars in the Sky than all the grains of the sand in the world?. I mean, grains of sand are pretty small and you would think that on the average there must be a fair ole few of em. But there are quite a few beaches in the world and then there’s quite a lot under millions of square miles of ocean . So how do these scientists know,?. And how do they know it’s possible to squeeze all the matter in the entire universe into the size of a golf ball or whatever ( maybe it was a Tennis ball). I mean I can never squeeze all my grass cuttings and dead flowers into my brown bin and that’s a lot bigger than a golf ball. ( never mind trying to fit the entire universe in)
