For kids . Heard this on radio this morning and mde me giggle , a family have sweary liquid not fairy liquid in house as the kids have been told you swear thats what you will get in mouth.

Hands up all those that have either had it done or done it to kids.

Me I once put Persil washing powder in my middle boys mouth must have been 8 at time was gutted he didnt blow bubbles but he didnt swear again.

A friend threatened to do this for a while to one of her children

Ended up having to carry out the threat only to have the child laughing about it blowing bubbles and wanting more to do it again as it was so funny

She had to find a different method of punishment after that

:-/ I'm not sure that's a very good idea practically never mind morally - detergents can cause allergic reactions.

No i wouldnt do that, i think it would be dangerous. They tell you to rinse it off your dishes because it is bad for you.

Washing up liquid is a bit cruel but some washing powders and liquids have chemicals in that are dangerous if taken orally so its not a good move.

in rare cases it can cause Pulmonary aspiration, some would deem it child abuse. I guess that includes us

My ex once washed my sons mouth out with soap...... whilst they were in Egypt because my son dared to say he didn't want to go to the Pyramids in 100 degree heat.

He was 10 and I got legal advice and a judge to tell my ex that if he ever did it again, he would be on supervised access and would be up on a child abuse charge.

It's disgusting, its wrong and no child should have to endure having anything that is abrasive enough to clean..... in their mouths.

Not something I ever found neccessary to do with my kids, and even if they had over stepped the mark by that much I wouldn't have resorted to something so victorian.

we find mr darcy's electro bed is good for bed wetting, other than that it would have to be the Lupins disciplinarian stick until they know how many poles in an acre.

My parents thought that physical violence, what some people refer to as a 'clip around the ear' or a 'smack' was the way to create order and discipline.

Did it teach me anything? Yes, up until my mid-teens it taught me that if someone doesn't do what you want - hit them - and so I did.

Then I grew up a bit a realised that violence starts where intelligence ends.

It also taught me never to hit, smack, punish my own kids. All of whom turned out to do well at school, take up trades for a living, stay the right side of the law and be non-violent people themselves. And in case anyone is wondering they are all quite formidable inasmuch that they don't put up with shit from anyone either.

Not trying to make out I'm the perfect parent, just trying to make the point that it is possible to bring up children without using violence or abusive methods.

A child that is old enough to have some comprehension of the meaning of a swearword also has the power of reason and therefor it's possible the explain the error.

Question... how do you think, as adults you would feel if you got a smack around the face for a minor error or crime?

Consider if you will, the error/crime was that you let slip a swearword at the wrong place and time and so it is essential you are punished...

Firstly 'real world' I dare say for some it might cost them their job if at work at the time!

Should you have a little smack on the back of your hand?

Should you have your mouth scrubbed out with soap?

Should you be canned across the face?

Should you have a size 12 steel toe-capped boot thrown at your head?

Quite frankly its odds on that for any of the last three the perpetrator would find themselves arrested and then in court on some assault charge!!!

Did my parents methods do me any harm? YES loads! Did any good come from it? YES it taught me NOT to be anything like them and they have both gone to their graves unforgiven by me and my sisters.

If you are a parent who uses the line 'kids need a smack' as comfortable alternative word for violence and abuse remember you are only doing it that way because YOU can't think of a better way!

thankfully my 2 children have only ever used swear words in front of me when asking the meanings of them.

i'm a foul mouthed uncouth sod at the best of times but kids have never heard me swear, ever.

i instill in them certain values and respect for they way i treat them and they return it to me.

it's not to say that they can be foul mouthed snotty little shits when they're out playing with their friends but they know when to leave it outside just as i do

As a light side to punishment I used to hold out my hand and say to my kids run onto that ..... one actually did!

I always found the time out and sent to the naughty step or naughty spot worked perfectly.

Soap and other things put into a childs mouth is assault ..... make them eat sprouts and broccoli I say ... one of mine would rather eat soap.

sounds like child abuse, how people condone whatthey do to there children is beyond me, if it was done to an adult in the street they would be arrested!!! Only our opinion, and as you can see we not in the smacking/punishing children, take things away from them ground them etc
