Just how many times am i supposed to say, "Thank you, but i'm not interested", before they finally get the message?

Sometimes i think i'm too polite.

It's the idiots supposedly from talk talk or now BT that call to tell me my internet isn't working... I just tell them to piss off (sometimes not even that politely) in my broadest glaswegian accent. Got fed up being nice to these muppets. Always seem to call when I'm trying to get my nephew to sleep!

I've been registered since it came out on both my landline and mobile and I still get the calls. The scam callers don't care. It does help with the plant company cold callers though.

somewhere close to you

IF the nuisance calls do not stop (and you know who they are for example double glazing company) threaten to report them to the ICO (Information Commissioner's Office) as under new Data Protection (GDPR) they are not allowed to do so and the ICO take this very seriously. They can issue huge fines. And they do issue those fines.

UK registered organizations should not be breaking the law - overseas businesses aren't restricted.

TPS registration for your home and mobile is wise, as others have said.

Report law breakers to the Information Commissioners Office - they have online page to do it. Huge fines await the companies.

If I'm suspicious it's that type of call I remain silent until they start or disconnect from me. It's stopped almost all unwanted calls now - potentially one a month.

I ask them if they realise where they are calling. This usually gets silence followed by a slightly nervous no. I then tell them it's a funeral home and they usually go very apologetic and hang up. It's not of course but you have to have a little fun.

Hiding in the shadows

I've had this land-line number for about 5yrs, only a handful of people have it.

I've been getting calls for the same 5-6 names weekly since day 1, from the same companies.

No matter how many times I say "I've never heard of them" "this isn't their number" "please remove from your list"

These “idiots” are all people just wanting to get by in life.

The lady I claimed 51k back for on her ppi wasn’t pissed off

Nor the couple that bought an alarm that saved there life

Thousands of entry level jobs have been wiped out thanks to gdpr. Nice one

Not to mention the single moms who could do part time work whilst there kids are at school.

Everyone moans about double glazing calls but I’d like to bet most of u had new windows following one.

Ok there are some companies out there taking advantage

But what is wrong with people working for a living cause guess what

There are more on the dole now eating up the money that u pay in

You cite two examples of why you feel good about cold calling , but you must have made thousands of calls to people who didn’t want the call . It’s an invasion of ones privacy , it’s unwanted , and an unnecessary intrusion .

I don't. I keep the menu's and just bin the rest. It's instant. No questions to ask, I don't have to stop what I'm doing to answer an unwanted call. I don't have to Google the number in case it was an important call.

I'd much prefer a few leaflets than calls.

I wait for them to ask for a specific person, I tell them I'll just go & get them, leave the phone on the table, then go make a cuppa or have a shower etc, then go back. If they're still there say sorry that person hasn't lived here for 5+ years.

Or I tell them straight away, the person they're after died a couple of days ago.

With my mum being disabled you can imagine we get lots of calls trying to sell us disabled equipment. The same company would call 2/3 times a week to sell me a stair lift. As always I would explain why we didn’t need one. One day they rang and I had some spare time on my hands so I let’s them pitch their sale for over half an hour asking all kinds of questions. I was really showing and interest in wanting to buy one of their super duper lifts. At the end of the conversation he then arranged a date to come out and measure up for the lift and asked where my stairs was situated in the house. Yes you guessed, I said stairs I have no stairs I live in a bungalow. Although I don’t live in a bungalow but said that to piss the guy off. It did the trick though because after an exchange of a few harsh words from both me and the salesman the company has never rang again trying to sell me a stair lift

I treat my phone calls like I do my messages on here. If I don't recognise the number I don't answer it. Anyone important will leave a message. My phone identifies a lot of spam/ fraud numbers as well but I'll Google any persistent calls. Then I simply block the number if it's not legit.

GDPR doesn't mean that cold callers can't process/use your data at all. It means they have to apply what is being called the Balancing Test - your individual rights and freedoms vs their legitimate interests i.e. the right to run a business and conduct activities that allow them to do so. So you'd have to prove that they were breaching your right to freedom in making that call.

I only get the automated ones asking about "the accident you had that wasn't your fault". I tell them I'm a little teapot, and if it gets to the next question (less frequently now) I ask if it was the accident involving a bands, a food processor and my cock. It usually disconnects at that point.

Otherwise I just don't reply but don't hang up. If I can waste just a little of their time then they're not bothering somebody else

Not a cold call but similar.

For years I would receive invites from a well known American credit card company. Always politely refused by tearing up their invite and returning in the reply paid envelope.

Eventually, not so politely I returned it, but scrawled all over the reply envelope in red felt tip,

"How many times do I have to swearing swearing tell you I don't want your swearing swearing card"

That worked a treat

I cancelled my BT contract a year ago. Got a brand new number (part of fibre broadband package) registered with TPS and made sure it was ex-directory, from the word go.

I've only ever given the number to my sister and my parents.

Things were blissfully quiet for the first few days but within a week, cold-caller assholes started bombarding me with unwanted shite.

Anytime from 7am to 9pm, regardless of who they might get through to.

It might be a job to them but it is a goddamned menace, to those of us who hate the bastards.

The usual ones are 'I work for Microsoft department and I'm calling about your computer problem" (bullshit), or "We are calling about the recent accident you had" (bullshit), or "Is it time to get your oven cleaned?"... etc

I welcome any legal efforts to stop them.

the right frame of mind -London

I read about a guy who got them at their own game:

First he got them to give him a company headquarters address and landline number he could call them back on.

He then used this to send them a letter by registered mail stating that they should cease and desist all future unsolicited calls and stated that if they did not obey this request he would be billing them for £X per hour for wasting his time and this was his going rate per hour.

he then waited for them to call again, made sure he was recording the call, informed them of such and warned them that he would be charging for his time as per his letter dated... and kept them on the phone for as long as he could before invoicing them for the full duration of the call. he followed this up with a reminder letter when they duly ignored his first letter and then finally took them to the small claims court where je won his case.

Now he practically relishs the thought of an unsolicited call.

"I read about a guy who got them at their own game:

Do a google search for: Cold caller firm pays out for wasting businessman's time -it links to a Telegraph article -now what was that about BS?

"Dude u have anger issues"

I'm a very relaxed, happy and well-balanced individual, thanks.

When people cold-call me, they are breaking the law.

I'm sure you are pleased to have a job (#SoProud) but there is no excuse for blatantly circumventing the law, to repeatedly pester people, who have taken steps to block you.

Anyway, back to Article 6, and the six reasons an organisation can legally use personal data as part of their business activities, for example to cold call potential new customers. These are listed in Part 1 of Article 6, and go roughly as follows (I'll paraphrase, but you can check the actual text for the full definitions):

If someone’s given you their explicit consent for you to use their data then you’re free to use their data for that purpose

If you’re entering into a contract with someone and you need to use their data in order to fulfil that contract, then it’s fine to use their data.

If you’re legally obliged to use someone’s personal data, then you can (and probably should) do so.

If the processing can be demonstrated to be necessary to protect someone’s vital interests, i.e. their health or wellbeing would otherwise be at stake, then it’s a good idea to use their data.

If use of the data is necessary to carry out a task in the public interest then that’s fine too.

If none of the above apply, but you can demonstrate your “legitimate interests” aren’t overridden by the individual’s “fundamental rights and freedoms” then you may be able to use his or her data.

Under the Duvet

I don't get them so much any more.

I just use to keep repeating "That's fascinating!" in a random American accent to everything they said or asked.

They got bored before I did.

I actually found it quite entertaining but I don't get out much.

"With my mum being disabled you can imagine we get lots of calls trying to sell us disabled equipment. It did the trick though because after an exchange of a few harsh words from both me and the salesman the company has never rang again trying to sell me a stair lift "

Company called twice a week?

I have had some where the caller turns nasty and asks are you a wanker or is your mum a whore etc etc.

Had one where he said will you do me a favour? I said yes to which he replied go and ride your mum and then kill yourself...

Their livelihood is to sell the product or service.

The method of doing so tells you a lot about the type of business they are. Cold calling businesses tend to be full of shisters, conmen/women, underhand shits who are only interested in fleecing you of your cash.

If I want to buy something I will chose when and where I will do it.

Random calling, followed by repeated calling and harrasment is not selling

Can I say I am very very proud of myself for the wonderful and fantastic job I do of caring for my elderly disabled mother full time

And can I say before you start shouting your mouth off and judging me try being a little more reasonable

My mother is paralysed from a massive stroke

We don’t need a stairlift because a stair lift is no good to her

She has to be hoisted in and out of a bed into a chair/commode and wheelchair

She sleeps in the lounge downstairs that’s converted to her bedroom

My mother struggles to take calls because you can barely understand a word she says because her speech is severely affected and most people can’t understand what she says

And she also has vascular dementia as well

So the answer to your question about how does my mother cope

She doesn’t cope because she relies on the strength and the caring of her daughter aka me

As for hardship the company calling twice a week

They was repeatedly told every time of my mother’s situation as to why a stair lift wasn’t any use to us

If they had took note and took us out of their system like I had asked many times then I wouldn’t have had to have played them at their own game

So please do not judge me or jump to conclusions thanku

Get the by call bloking phone

If it's not on your accepted list then the leave a message and hold on the line.

The phone will ring you listen to the message Then decide if you will accept all calls from that number, only the once or bloke the number always.

Can honestly say we don't get cold callers on house phone now

However the mobile phone still do but have app to bloke in future

Don’t judge or jump to conclusions? But it’s ok for u and others to character assassinate people and waste the time of people just for doing a job?

I agree there are companies that go too far but for the most part it’s just people wanting to earn a living.

People jumping on the band wagon just to destroy people’s livelihoods is out of order.

I’m sorry for your mother’s position my mother too was disabled and how her life changed when she brought a rise and reclining chair.

If the cold callers are from reputable companies, it's still a pain, receiving numerous calls a day, but at least they're not always trying to con you. It's the financial scam callers that I have an issue with. We had one recently and my husband was drawn in by this con man. I spoke to him and it didn't take long to call his bluff, I could spot the signs, having worked in the financial industry. Reported the company and there was a piece on tv last night to say they had been rumbled! I was asked to do cold calling when I was in banking, but didn't think it was right, so refused. I don't think banks are allowed to do it anymore, because of misselling

I strongly disagree with cold calling and along with door to door salesmen, in my opinion it should be banned!

I would never do business with any company who employs cold callers and/or door to door salesmen. If I want a product or service I will go and look for a company who provides it. There are plenty of ways to advertise your product and services without using the deplorable tactics that many cold callers use.

As for the person who said that they think all employers use cold calling, utter shite! I have been in employment since the age of 14 and have NEVER worked for a company that uses cold calling!

The only time I can think of us ever buying off the doorstep was when a young man came around selling his art work. Hubby bought a beautiful A4 pencil drawing of a cat for a fiver which we had framed. The picture is so beautiful that we were hoping he would call again as we would have loved to commission him to draw pictures of our own cats. Sadly, we never saw him again. Hubby didn’t think to get a phone number for him and despite our efforts to find him or his work on social media and the internet we have drawn a blank

There are plenty of ways to advertise your product and services without using the deplorable tactics that many cold callers use.

As for the person who said that they think all employers use cold calling, utter shite! I have been in employment since the age of 14 and have NEVER worked for a company that uses cold calling!

This, I would think if your company was successful you wouldn't have to cold call to a non receptive audience. If we want to buy something, we research the internet, if we want financial advise, we would go to our bank. I too wouldn't buy off the doorstep

When it suits eh lol"

I did state that this was MY opinion, not OUR opinion, there is a difference! As much as a love the picture hubby bought, if the man had knocked the door when I was at home I would have said no thank you and sent him away, I would not have looked at his work!

Incidentally, I presume by your posts that you wait until you are cold called when you’re thinking about making a purchase.......no thought not! I stand by my statement that cold calling is a deplorable practice used by unscrupulous businesses and should be banned!

"It’s not actually illegal to cold call people it’s only illegal to withold your number if you’re a cold caller and under the new GPDR they can still cold call

From the TPS website: "It is a legal requirement that all organisations (including charities, voluntary organisations and political parties) do not make such calls to numbers registered on the TPS unless they have your consent to do so."

"

Well done, you can quote a page of website. I read contracts and am careful to tick/untick boxes to say so. All The Time.

What do you need to drill into your head that I DON'T WANT YOUR CALL?

"I read about a guy who got them at their own game:

Bs

Do a google search for: Cold caller firm pays out for wasting businessman's time -it links to a Telegraph article -now what was that about BS?"

Interesting! Just read it, he's now set up a website, think I'll have a look later

The worst calls I had were from charities. I used to sell a few draw tickets for several charities. Then they started phoning me trying to get me to subscribe to a monthly lottery, as well as the draw tickets. I was hassled so much that I ended up not donating anything to anyone them.

All cold callers should be shot. They are a pain in the arse forcing products on people that are either forced into buying something to shut them up or end up being scammed out of money. If people want to buy something then they go and look for it. I need a new tv but I don't sit around waiting for Currys to ring me on the off chance I need one. I've been a cold caller on many occasions throughout the years. I've earned a good wage. I've been a cold caller thats helped people out of debt or been paying far too much for their energy(gas/elec)..I hate 'cold' calling..but facts are facts..some people are unable to use things like 'which'...You will be amazed at some people paying £200+ on their energy bills and had no clue they were being charged that.

obviously when I get the cold callers saying I'd been in an accident, they are told to fuck off..

I know several people that got shafted with PPI...they then get back thousands they were mis sold on.

When I am in a cold calling job, I'm polite, friendly...and a fucking good salesman...and I'm not on the fucking brew and rarely have been for a few decades.

I work hard(when in these jobs), 0 contract hours, performance related pay...no job security...if lucky you can survive on bonuses etc.

Make them think about your answers so for example, electricity bills. No, my home is lit by candlelight

Had an accident that wasn’t your fault?

Yes, it’s my funeral tomorrow.

Yes, I lost both ears and so I’m now deaf

I know they’re silly answers but it will ensure the call taker stops to think about what you have said and then you can prepare to give another awful answer to them

I have worked in an energy industry a few years on and off..when people dont have access to the internet as much as others, they miss out. There are so many things there to help people..from insulation, to better heating systems.

lets not get by the fact energy prices in the last decade have almost quadrupled.

On some days, I cant even sell 'free' stuff...because people think its a scam...

Only just yesterday I had to convince a women she woul have this free insulation that would save her £200+ on her heating bills..at no cost to her..(I did win her over), facts are facts...either save money...think about environment..blahhhfuckingblahh..

I welcome any legal efforts to stop them.

Dude u have anger issues"

He doesn't have anger issues at all.

You have credibility issues when trying to justify an industry that became a blatant nuisance to the point where it needed Parliamentary action and legal methods to try to curb its excesses.

Try having someone in hospital, or serving overseas and see what receiving a spate of unwanted calls after hours does to those people.

Excuses like "it gives someone a job" are exactly that: excuses.

Drug dealing, pimping, handling stolen goods also helps give people "jobs" in the black economy of our crap world but that isn't a reason to accept their existence and it's no reason to accept cold callers either.

BT call guardian(and other networks)

dont fill in personal information online(some people fill in 'WIN AN IPAD NOW!')...in most cases there a box that says do not pass my details onto others..its no guarantee you wont have more contact, but it does die down when you get on the telephone preference service(its free ffs.

again...I will say...some people(mostly elderly0, dont see the things they can get from online sources...because they dont have the internet/or know how to work it.

it is very ying and yang..

easy enough to use some phone blocking services..the calls eventually will stop(also if you are inclined to use many different online services, you might want to check who passes details on to 3rd parties).. and like your profile states, NO SINGLE MEN!

(Unless I express an interest), it would be better to block all men...just saying lol
