Great car, and far less to go wrong than newer model Golf's. If money wasn't an issue, I would love a Mk 1 Lotus Cortina, but it's house deposit money to buy one.

An ex and I used to share an old Triumph Spitfire. It was red and one of our mates had a racing green one and another had a winter white one. We loved them at the time and I’m still rather fond of spitfires. I haven’t seen one on the roads for years though

I am a restoration but. Done many classic British bikes ('49 AJS,'51 Matchless,'74 Triumph Bonneville etc). Ran a '66 Lotus Cortina. Restored a '56 Beetle to concourse and won awards.

Current project is a '78 Mini 1000 - complete strip down and rebuild.

Austin 3 -litre saloon - ws like a massive version of the 1800 , only made bout 6 thousand of them and I had the privilege of owning 2 of them . They were awesome , straight 6 engine huge interior and gorgeous leather seats , only drawback was if you drove it sedately it would reach 18mpg, In their wisdom they replaced it with the awful Austin Princess

I’ve got an MGBGT that I inherited from my late grandfather.

It’s a bag of nails and drives like only a 1970’s British sports car can drive but for sentimental reasons I cannot bring myself to sell it.

I do about 300 miles a year in it and it’s nice to drive a car that’s not packed full of driver assistance features.

I've saved a 1996 Jaguar XJ 4.0 Sovereign LWB that was going to be scrapped earlier this year by getting it through its mot with welding and leaking fuel lines and steering issues. Took it to the Silverstone Classic and did a parade lap with other Jaguars as part of celebration of 50 years of the XJ. It's been booked by my grandson to be his prom car next summer.

Very much a personal thing as to what actual car but with classics there is one fact of life: If its a minter and running well you will pay big bucks, probably not enjoy it and never get your money back. The other extreme is an old dog and rebuild it. Don't cost your hours because there will be thousands but when its done it is a mega feeling. But you buy cheap and spread the rebuild costs.

Best option is to find one with a good body (as you do on here) and maybe dodgy mechanicals and needing a coat of paint and lots of TLC. Less expensive, still rewarding and you will make a profit.

Just how I see classics having done a few but whatever you choose - ENJOY!

This thread is longer than I thought it may be. Mine is 1987 Audi Quattro Turbo.

I quite fancy meeting like minded swingers for a bit of tinkering.

Bought a mk2 golf Pasedena edition at the beginning of 2021 but sold it almost immediately. Way too rusty to bother with.

Not sure you'd call it a classic yet but I own a mk3 vr6 golf. That's also a rust bucket but it's my baby I've owned since I was 22 so that's currently at the bodyshop awaiting full restoration.

Another that not yet a classic but most certainly will be is my e46 silver grey M3. I hope to keep that to the day I die

I know, it's dragon green too! Can't wait to drive it again, not been on the road since 2009.

Used to use the Halfords classic oil in mine, it was green! Sold the car 5 years ago so don't know if it's still good stuff to use

Some ppl recommend 20/50 others say 10/40 ,as long as its a mineral oil you should be ok with either
