Does anyone have any worst moments at an airport or on a plane?

Mine was when me and the family were boarding a plane home from Majorca on the Dreamliner. I was looking forward to getting home as it was my birthday the next day. As we sat there ready for take off, the captain then says that a couple of passengers haven't boarded yet and we ended up waiting over an hour for them to turn up missing a time slot to fly out in the process. When the passengers finally arrived, I'm sure everyone on the plane including us was annoyed when we saw it was a couple of pensioners that held the plane up for over an hour. I have nothing against old people but to delay the flight was a joke.

As soon as they were in their seats, we were on our way home but it pretty much ruined my birthday as the delay gave us less time to do anything for my birthday.

To me, that was probably the worst moment I ever experienced on a plane.

Try working on one for 21 years,my stories could makes yours seem trivial. Your example happens all the time. It makes my working day longer and I’m paid the same. It’s a pain but I have more tolerance and patience because of it.

Perhaps they had a reason to delay the flight? Bless the old folk.

Never had a bad experience touch wood. Sometimes when I go home the planes can’t land at Gibraltar and they have to walk you across the border to a coach and then you travel down to Malaga check in again and then fly from there. It’s a bit of a shitter but that’s life.

I have several one time with my family driving to Gatwick hit Road works which even though I left with plenty of time meant we got to airport a little late I dropped everyone at airport departures with cases as I had to go to car park leave car and get shuttle bus back to departures my family and cases all there an hour before departure I turned up 25 mins before they wouldn’t let us on, had to book another flight one day into holiday and stay at airport hotel my daughters got a flight that same day and made their way to hotel

I was flying from Dheli to Kabul in 1991 but had to turn back as the airport was under rocket attack by whichever faction the CIA were arming at the time. 10 hours flight to end up where we started but without any holes in the fuselage.

It was a bit of a pisser when all the oil fell out of the gearbox on the only engine......

Then there was the mid air collision and the one that caught fire on take off. they weren't fun either...

Only one unsettling experience on a plane and that was on a smaller plane coming back from a girls weekend in Edinburgh.

We had an episode of pretty bad turbulence and the plane went up and then suddenly dropped down (felt like it was being pushed down) quite significantly. Probably felt it more as it was a smaller plane, but it’s not something i’d want to experience again.

The only thing I've ever experienced was turbulence while flying to Florida back in 2008 and we found out that we actually flew through a tornado that was just dying out.

I'm scared of heights so my family thought a glider flying lesson would be fun. It was going great until the instructor asked would you like to do a loop. I made it quite clear no and insisted we land as soon as possible. The lesson had been delayed twice before over the previous 12 months due to near fatal accidents.

Worst moments include being punched by d*unk passengers.

Best moments: all the sex. So much of it as you come into contact with so many people delay. Airports and airlines are almost like third dimensions with a real detachment from reality.

My worst was a couples ring of months ago. Drove all the way to Scotland but then nearly missed the flight. Seriously had to sprint the length of the airport to catch the flight. And I never ever run unless a bear is chasing me.

Took my 2 baileys to recover.

Love old people, I think young people trying to rush them at self checkouts are scum, or people beeping them at a light for taking 3 seconds too long.

As for my worst time at an airport.

It was when the icelandic volcano erupted and all flights in Europe got grounded and a very expensive holiday to thailand and India and other Asian places got cancelled.

My first holiday in like 8 years, and all I could do is reclaim the flight tickets costs, all hotel money bookings lost due to not enough notice.

I remember the Icelandic Volcano erupting. Our flight to Majorca got cancelled as well. We were able to get our money back plus compensation I think.

The time I was flying to Majorca and some woman in her 50's had decided to get absolutely trollied in the airport before boarding the plane, she then got a nosebleed on boarding which wouldn't stop due to her being d*unk with thinned blood, we ended up sat on the runway for nearly 2 hours while they sorted her out.

I was flying from Barcelona to Cork. The weather was horrendous. Very stormy conditions. It took 3 attempts before finally landing. Each time it was so close to the ground the lines were visible then back into the air again. Passengers were screaming, vomiting, hysterical. When we finally landed they couldn't attach the walkway as the plane was bouncing up and down and from side to side. I watched another plane coming in to land. It was like tinfoil in the air. I had a 3 hour drive home in the rain and wind, through floods. Awful experience. One of my friends was so traumatised she didn't fly for 10 years after that.

Another time going to Italy checked my luggage in 3 hours prior to departure boarded plane all passengers seated waiting for departure my name go called out to go to front of plane, all cabin crew there pilot Co pilot and some ground crew, pilot advised me that their had been a problem and my suitcase got cut in half, they had put all my stuff into a black holdall and they asked me to pull my luggage out of the bag and tell them what was missing, I said " you want me to pull all my luggage out now while all the passengers are sitting waiting to take off? I said no I will look through it when I arrive in Italy " good job it was my case

When I was living in the far East, I thought it would be fun to go with a mate to Tokyo for a long weekend using my staff travel tickets. On the return home flight, we thought it would be fun to fly with JAL as our tickets were code shared...

Then during the takeoff roll, the jumbo engine exploded and the crew considered an evacuation. Fortunately for me, the engine fire was put out quickly by the fire rescue staff, but then we waited on the plane for a tug (1hr), the at a parking stand (1 hr), then for a replacement plane, (3 hrs), and then we landed after the curfew at the airport close to midnight. Lots of passengers missed their flight connections that day.

I’ve been doing it for 21 years and don’t see much sex going on at all. I have zero interest in passengers or meeting at my hotels. I thought there would be more but maybe being just long haul, we are too knackered to get up to much. I prefer it that way also.

Not sure, the airline (can't remember the name) went bust not long after, this is going back to 2009. It was definitely annoying! She was sat there bleeding everywhere with loads of people fussing around her and the pilot looking irritated.

Yeah, when I was flying out to Thailand a few years ago I was in the midst of breaking out in chickenpox. I felt like crap on a packed plane and by the time we finally landed I was absolutely covered in itchy spots and looked a right mess! Had to spend most of the first week indoors.

That's good that it wasn't as bad as when I had it. It certainly ruined half of the holiday for me. One week, I was alright and on the following week, I was very ill

Only a couple of issues. First was when I was 21 on a girls holiday in Ibiza. There was a baggage handlers strike and the reps drove us to the airport and abandoned us. After spending 16hrs in the airport the airline decided to put 200 very angry Scots on a plane to Birmingham, then bus us to glasgow. That was fun

Another time myself and a friend went to New York. Our flight from Edinburgh to Paris was delayed due to fog in Paris. Once we got there it was a mad dash across the airport only to be told the connection was delayed by 90 minutes.

Sadly though, in those 90 minutes our cases didn't manage to make their way onto our flight so no bags when we arrived at JFK. They were delivered to our hotel next morning and baggage handlers had helpfully ripped my zip open despite me leaving the padlock keys. I never lock my cases now.

For me it was an aircraft coming to to stand with the main gear on fire, it delayed me getting the plane checked and powered.

Which in turn delayed getting the passengers off the plane, and me getting the plane turned round and back out again.

There had been a bit of turbulence on the way across (which doesn't bother me, I quite like it) but then on the descent into the airport the plane just dropped. Grown men screamed lol!

Going on holiday last year I measured out enough scoops into several large clear zip lock bags and put it in my hand luggage.

Yes I got stopped at customs, asked "is this your bag, did you pack it yourself? Etc"

I had to stand there while, the case was opened, the bags lifted out very ceremoniously, while everyone around me stood staring open mouthed!

Yes I'm guilty of being a protein smuggler!

Well yes it happens every now & then.

Worst was when we were approaching Phoenix AZ once. It was a bit bouncy so I was hanging on to my glass of wine, when the pilot suddenly called for the attendants to sit. About 2 seconds later the wine shot out of my glass. Luckily it didn't land on me. It crossed the aisle and drenched someone on the other side about 3 seats away. I was most upset, it had cost me about $10.

It came on so suddenly that the attendants had not had time to put the trolleys away. They were hanging on as the trolleys shot up in the air, depositing tins of and packets of bagels in all directions. A right mess but luckily only a few people with bruises.

Delays happen all the time.

Once spent over 12 hours at Athens airport when the plane broke down. Spent 5 hours in the immigration queue at Newark NJ when the computers broke down. Once 4 big suitcases full of exhibition equipment disappeared down the check in belt at Gatwick and when I say disappeared I mean exactly that. Felt a right plonquette next day on the stand at the Las Vegas Convention Centre with only my tablet PC and an emergency business suit in a horrible American style.

Plane went into a nosedive,

Plane landed virtually sideways before straightening up a bit at the last minute.

Plane Landing gear wouldn't drop so circled until it did.

Plane Engine set on fire and fire engines chased us down the runway to put it out when we stopped.

Plane diverted with "issues" to a closer airport.

These are just off the top of my head, the moral of the story Is don't fly with me

My worst was on a tiny plane in the Caribbean. A pilot, 2 others and me, if I remember correctly. We were in a storm, incredibly strong and he told us that it was the worst he'd ever flown in and that it was highly likely that we would not make it.

Just feeling comfortable with the tremendous calamity of the plane turbulence was bad enough, without his prognosis for the journey.

As you guessed,, I'm alive but we were shocked that he shared his horror forecast in the way he did. I'd love preferred just the emergency instructions at the last minute.

Now that I think about it, the hour delay I experienced is nothing compared to being ill with chickenpox and in constant agony on the way home from Florida

I have had the circling due to landing gear not coming down and being chased by the fire trucks

recently coming into land at O’Hare the crew had been told to sit for landing when suddenly we shot up in the air again really steeply and had to go round

that was like being on a rollercoaster!

Yes I got stopped at customs, asked "is this your bag, did you pack it yourself? Etc"

Customs can scan your bag with an x-ray, open the bag and rummage through your bag without telling you. Also as you go into the channels (nothing to declare, declare items) you go through another scanner, if you get away with things usually that is due to them after bigger fish that day.

I've had many scary flights, mainly due to stormy weather. I flew to Corsica and the weather was so bad we had to land at the wrong airport. The lightening was horrendous and I was terrified. I honestly thought we would crash.

I was on a flight to Paris and we over shot the runway and skidded, sparks flying.

Short flight to Amsterdam in a storm where the plane was literally like a feather in the wind. We all cheered when we landed, scary as hell.

All the storms happen when I fly.... and sail for that matter

"Another time going to Italy checked my luggage in 3 hours prior to departure boarded plane all passengers seated waiting for departure my name go called out to go to front of plane, all cabin crew there pilot Co pilot and some ground crew, pilot advised me that their had been a problem and my suitcase got cut in half, they had put all my stuff into a black holdall and they asked me to pull my luggage out of the bag and tell them what was missing, I said " you want me to pull all my luggage out now while all the passengers are sitting waiting to take off? I said no I will look through it when I arrive in Italy " good job it was my case "

Nothing particularly bad, but I was once travelling to Belfast for a friend’s wedding (child free!) and I was still breastfeeding at the time, so I had my pump and bottles in my hand luggage. Went through security, bag was pulled to be searched and test my liquids, bloke does his testing and then asks me where my baby is, I reply “Oh, he’s at home, these are just for my boobs” he looked so confused

Checked into San Francisco airport a tad early, while awaiting at the gate for my flight, I got bored/hungry.

Spotted a bar, popped into said bar had a large beer and something to eat, when left the bar I realised I had missed my flight!!

Than had to wait for next flight and pay double to what I paid for the original flight!

Now I sit by the gate and do not move for anything!!!

Total panic as the whole family arrived at Heathrow 30 mins before the BOAC flight to Baghdad. Mum, dad and five kids. We were late due to car crash on the A20, we should have been there an hour before, but no worries the staff calmed us down and 15 mins later we were on board, our luggage onboard. 1965

Being sent to the wrong gate at Schipol airport, having to run like Usaine Bolt across the airport which is bloody massive, , with a hangover, carrying a crepe pan I'd found in the street the night before (don't ask, that's Amsterdam for you), got to the gate with minutes to spare before it closed...holy f@ck I'm getting palpitations just remembering it now!

In a 7/9 seater sightseeing flight over Ayres Rock, Australia in 1992. The wings were fixed below fuselage, so the pilot had to fly sideways and then flip over to the other side several times during the flight, so that we could take pictures. I managed to keep my stomach down in the hot stuffy bumpy cabin, compared to the others.

Flight from the Cayman Islands to Cuba on a propellered Cubanna flight in 1995. Plane was an hour late, condensation dripping from the ceiling, luggage stacked in the first few rows and you could push the seat in front of you over, like in a 3 door car. Was quite a smooth flight though!

Hong Kong airport in 2010, alone with 2 children and realised I was on the wrong side of the airport, with 30 minutes before takeoff. Had to take the train and made it before they closed the gate!

Gibraltar airport in 1999. Due to weather conditions we had to be bused to Malaga airport 2 hours away, whilst our plane landed in Tangiers. Got back to Gatwick at about 5:30 on a Friday evening on the last day of school term. The 3 of us were all exhausted and hungry (I was 3 months pregnant). There was no vacancies at any hotels or B and Bs nearby, M25 was a carpark and took us over 3 hours to get from there and 20 miles up the M1 to the first services with a Travelodge.

On many other flights I experienced fairly bad turbulence, where food trolleys had to be stored away during mealtimes and stewards told to sit down, whilst we went up and down like rollercoaster. Then there’s the few loons on board that need a little supervision from us passengers - like the old woman who kept on taking her seatbelt off and to eat a banana, just as the engines were powering up and going down the runway. With the stewards already seated, us passengers had to instruct her to buckle up!

As soon as they were in their seats, we were on our way home but it pretty much ruined my birthday as the delay gave us less time to do anything for my birthday.

To me, that was probably the worst moment I ever experienced on a plane.I have several one time with my family driving to Gatwick hit Road works which even though I left with plenty of time meant we got to airport a little late I dropped everyone at airport departures with cases as I had to go to car park leave car and get shuttle bus back to departures my family and cases all there an hour before departure I turned up 25 mins before they wouldn’t let us on, had to book another flight one day into holiday and stay at airport hotel my daughters got a flight that same day and made their way to hotel

I put two soluble aspirin in the bottle, waited for them to dissolve. Opened the lid just as bf was walking back, lid shot about 12 foot in the air, cola everywhere, he glared at me and stomped off again while I laughed hysterically. He came back eventually but didn't see the funny side....

No sense of humour some folk.

I think the longest flight I have had has been about 4 or 5 hours, and I try to get night flights as it means many people will try to get some shut eye, so I haven't had any really bad experiences. The only one that springs to mind was having to use the toilet after someone had oviously been trying to toilet train a chimpanzee with a bad case of the squits. It smelled like a farmyard after they have been slurrying the fields. Couldn't they at least make some attempt at cleaning up after themselves? It makes me wonder how bad their houses must be.

Only one bad experience in Cyprus a few years back.

Travel agents Rep left insufficient time for transfer from Northern Cyprus hotel to Airport in Southern Cyprus, during what was the Nicosia "rush hour". Add in delays at North/South border checks, an accident on motorway to Airport meaning diversions thru small villages, I arrived at Airport 15 mins before flight take off.

Departure boards said flight had Closed but Info desk found Airline check-in desk had waited for me. Once I had checked-in, I had 10 minutes to get to boarding gate which was furthest away on other side of terminal.

Passport Control was a scrum with 100's of passengers queued up for the 1 customs kiosk open. Diplomacy went outta the window as I kicked, elbowed, slapped, punched, gouged and swore my way through only to be stopped by a policeman for my bad behaviour!

Then I had to run thru to the Gate to find it closed and the plane taxiing to the main runway.

But then, an official appeared and checking who I was said, "please wait!" and made a phone call.

In minutes, a set of Mobile Steps appeared outside the boarding gate into which I was told to get in. It then drive me out to the plane which was sitting at end of the runway ready for takeoff! The steps were pushed up against a door and I got inside, to massive applause. Literally as I sat down, the plane moved off down the runway!!!!

Once got 3hrs into a flight to NY and the pilot announced there was a landing gear issue and incase anything happened it would be better to happen in the UK. Couldn't land in Manchester so ended up circling Gatwick trying to burn up some fuel just incase we crashed on landing. We didnt and all is good
