Charity Shops

So as I don't hijack Diamonds clothes disposal thread, if you are donating items to a Charity shop :

Do you consider which charity(ies) you donate your items to or do you just go to the nearest shop ?

Do you prefer to donate to local or national charities ?

Personally, mine go to either a local animal shelter or to a local hospice.

Often make a purchase too. But only Oxfam sell Goats.

I personally sell on Ebay and donate the money.

I kinda know the true worth of an item I have bought and want to get the best price.

We only have three charity shops here. My mum takes everything to the cancer shop cause my grandma died of it. When callum was small first week in december he used to sort out all his old toys coats and dressing gown(ive got an obsession about kids and dressing gowns) and he (obviously i was there) would take them to the volunteer bureau and hand them over and say he would like to donate them to needy children. It was of great importance to me he appreciated how lucky he was.

My first choice would be MIND but we dont have a shop here so i guess it will be cancer shop. But my coat and thick cardis/jumpers are going to asda

I don't give to charity shops mainly because they're so worn out, they don't want them.

But I've bought some amazing stuff out of London charity shops, an Armani suit once for £50.

I prefer to donate to local animal rescue because i love animals and the local hospice because my mum and dad were well looked after there.

No I don't, if I do give something to a charity shop, I give it to the nearest one to where I live. Either that or I do a car boot and sell it

Some charities verge on being money spinning business....I want as much dosh going to the cause...not on the eponymous...admin..

Usually to a medical charity - Cancer, Heart Foundation, Help the Aged - anything like that

But NEVER to Oxfam or other overseas aid. I'd sooner bin the stuff than send it there.

Sorry, but I believe that we should help our own people before we start looking further afield

The reason I have long ago stopped donating things to Oxfam shops is because I saw the article a few years ago that showed just how little of every pound raised in Oxfam shops ever gets on the ground in Africa in the form of usable aid.

It's a bloody disgrace.

I drop mine in at Heart/Cancer/NSPCC shops now

Exactly - the figure was something like 5% - the rest going on admin, then take the corrupt foreign governments portion of that 5% and what is left for the people for whom it is intended ? Zippo!

ps laine i know you and your bargain hunting in your boutiques lol - always wear flat shoes when you go shopping with this lady , your feet will ache by time shes finished

Always handy to have a Maddy with needles and thread on a night out ...... 'vintage' frocks are prone to 'wardrobe malfunctions'

I think that applies to most of the nationals too. So my unwanted stuff goe to the local hospice shop.

I give to animal charities- and try and buy what I can when I can from places like PDSA and Blue Cross. Have picked up some great things in the past. NEVER give to Oxfam due to what other people have said in the thread. I volunteered there for a couple of years and had no idea how little went to where it should until my better half told me.

Time for another clearout again methinks!!!!

In every post we get these sacks for unwanted clothing etc. I never give to animal charities...they're loaded! From my salary via GAYE I donate to NSPCC and SANDS.

I don't buy from charity shops directly, but my daughter does, with my money!
