Torquay

I judge Groups and Singers more by whether or not their songs have longevity in them rather than if I 'get them'....

So although I have never been a big Beatles fan no-one can doubt the song writing success they have earned over the last Five Decades...

Saying that, I 'don't get' the hype around certain bands and singers that often over rates their actual ability.

So in that vein I would suggest...

Amy Winehouse, Michael Buble, Eva Cassidy....just don't understand their hype.

As previously stated in the other thread, Queen and Elvis. But there are many many more, most stadium rock bands and too many others to list.

On a slightly different tack i don't get why they call a group where none of the members play any instruments a band? WTF?

Never really got the beatles thingy. They were ok but that's as far as it goes. Having said that, Lennon and Macca wrote some belter songs over the years.

Elvis was my hero - loved him and still do

Of recent times, I have to say that Amy Winehouse was very high up on my list of faves.

From years gone by, It has to be Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Holliday, Louis Armstrong, Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, Bennie Goodman, Acker Bilk .....

For a start I would need to know what "just not get" means! With music, there is nothing to "get" it is just music! You have three options, you like, you dislike or you are neutral to it! You don't suddenly get an "Oh yeah!".

The Beatles were without doubt one of the biggest influences of early "Pop" music. If you like any chart music from the sixties to now, you are swayed by their influence.

The Stones were the antipathy of the Beatles and they influenced the “bad boys” of the Pop world

Elvis, was a good singer in his early days but who succumbed to excesses and became a laughing stock. There are still the die hard fans who say that everything he did was good, but like the two groups above, there was a sizable chunk of crap as well!

If the ”Don’t Get” thing is “don’t like” How long have you got?

I beg to differ Rumour.

Have a listen to this version of Melanie's "Brand New Key" and you get several "Oh Yeahs"

Apart from rap, disco. All of it.

The Bee Gees, I thought they were taking the piss when I first heard Saturday Night Fever, those ridiculous falsetto vocals.

Grease, 9 fucking weeks that Your the One That I Want was at No 1, Bob Geldof earned his knighthood just for getting rid of it, with some style it has to be said.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=opd14v2I7Ik

Boney M were particularly hateful they not only bored the pants off any one with any taste in music with River of Babylon. When it finally got knocked off the top and hoped we'd heard the last of it, some stupid cunt DJ flipped over the single and the even worse Brown Girl in Ring, went back up to No 1.

Sorry brought back painful memories.
