"Race horses are one of the best cared for equine sectors ive ever worked with. It is in their blood to race. If they didnt want to do it or didn't enjoy it, they wouldn't carry on when they lost their jockey. And they wouldnt get so excited when they saw that white fencing. " Sorry but I disagree worth the last 2 points. I do agree they are well looked after a d don't think it should be banned but the other points are not true. They carry on because they are herd animals at heart and that reaction when they see the fence I'd learned behaviour and picking up on changes in the jockeys signals.

"The Grand National is a lot safer now, the horses want for nothing and are very well cared for. Have you heard of the saying “you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink” same with racing, if they don’t want to race, they won’t! " Really? Do they still shoot the horses if they break a leg, even though they can recover from it given the right treatment?

"As a few posters have pointed it out , I’ll add my two penny worth . Race horses are bred to race . Cattle are bred to be slaughtered and eaten . So what’s the difference ? As far as I am concerned not one person who sheds an ounce of sorrow over a race horse dying during a race should be eating meat ever again . If they do it’s simply hypocritical . Or is it perhaps because we don’t see the cows , sheep , pigs and chickens being slaughtered that makes it ok to be ambivalent to their plight ? " It's because pretty little girls and cute little boys don't beg to ride round and round in a school on a cow or a pig or a sheep every weekend. They are lesser animals to some. I'd gladly eat horse

It's not an easy fix for a horse, it depends where the break is and how likely the horse is it take to pretty much being immobilised and often sedated while it heals. Unfortunately national hunt casualtys are worth less than the flat racers as more often than not flat racers if they are make are still entire and can go on to reproduce and therefor retain some value, The national hunt horse are almost always geldings if male..

"So it seems it is a jockey who had the screen round him and not a horse, although a horse is being treated in the stables after running without his jockey" No the horse being treated is called Saint Are Another Horse Alpha des obeaux fell & as it was standing up got clobbered by Saint are , 2 half ton horses one moving at 20-30 mph & 1 pretty much stationery is going to hurt 1 of them . It had F*ck all to do with it running without its jockey, More likely to be the severest case of horse concussion ever.

" How can you equate a sport to eating meat!?

"I no longer bet or even watch this race anymore, it been about 20 years since I last saw the race on tv, the fences is far too high and brutal for the horses and it's always the horses get hurt and put down, what is the pleasure of that? The fences should be lower and less jumps and maybe shorter course to decrease the chances of the horses get hurt and put down. " You do realise the fences have been lowered? They no longer grow the fences, they used to have stumps left from the hedges where they were cut, hitting them any lower than a foot down would somersault a horse. That no longer happens as they're now layed. The last horse to die in the gn was 6 years ago, jumping loose.

That's a horses natural instinct to run, they are a herd animal and will stay with the pack. Half of these horses live a good life and it's only the unfortunate ones that die. The same could happen whilst riding a horse in a field or whilst taking part in the dressage etc

"The Grand National is a lot safer now, the horses want for nothing and are very well cared for. Have you heard of the saying “you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink” same with racing, if they don’t want to race, they won’t! Really? Do they still shoot the horses if they break a leg, even though they can recover from it given the right treatment?" Yep, unless the owner is really sentimental. After a broken leg the horse has lost most of its commercial value. I wonder if they can insure against it, so it makes even more sense to put the poor beggar down.

"Not meaning to spoilt this hysterical debate but it was a jockey receiving medical attention behind the screens, not a horse" At the time it was being reported that it was a horse down. It has been mentioned numerous times on this thread that it was the jockey that was hurt. (Who, of course, I hope is ok).

"The argument here covers a variety of views and thank god for freedom of speech ... but I don’t believe horses were bred to race any more than jockeys were born to ride them.. I wonder how long the National or any other race would continue if the injured rider was shot as well as the horse .. In my opinion using any animal for entertainment or so called sport is criminal... i rest my case ... ‘ Anything that doesn’t kill you must do you good ... unless it’s a bear ... a bear will kill you’ " There has been a significant number of jockeys who have lost their lives as a result of racing incidents... As to whether horses are bred to race, what do you think that the very substantial stud fees are paid for if it isn’t to breed horses to race?

All those sports are played at the sportsmans own risk. The horses have no say in this. I was going to say exactly this. Me too Life would be dull without sports that involve cruelty to animals? I have no words" The only reasons people have for keeping sports like horse racing and greyhound racing is "the animals love to run" and "people like to have a bet on it". The animals do love to run, but not in the conditions that they're trained and forced to. You can see that they're terrified when they put them in the starting boxes. Humans can give informed consent to take the risks involved in their sports, the animals can't. There is also no need for any of them to be put down because they're injured. I've seen dogs and horses survive far worse than the broken legs that race trainers put them down for. They get put down because they're a waste of money and no longer profitable.

‘ Anything that doesn’t kill you must do you good ... unless it’s a bear ... a bear will kill you’ There has been a significant number of jockeys who have lost their lives as a result of racing incidents... As to whether horses are bred to race, what do you think that the very substantial stud fees are paid for if it isn’t to breed horses to race?" I’m sorry for those jockeys but they chose to race, the horses didn’t .. as for being bred to race, I’m fairly sure horses were not put on this earth to race, we have bred them to run as fast as possible ...regardless of the danger to the horse, or the jockey ...the plan I guess is to breed a flying horse..? It’s all about making money at the end of the day and sadly I guess that some human beings will go to any depths to do that ...

Truth is the people doing the riding are in more danger than the horses over the big jumps. And life would be so dull without these sports thats for sure. Rubbish! All those sports are played at the sportsmans own risk. The horses have no say in this." . Neigh neigh neigh

The OP WAS completely incorrect, as they were referring to the individual race run at 5.15 on Saturday, there was no mention at all of other races at the meeting or the sport in general.

"The green canvas was out, horses diverted around beaches brook A horse is being put down Really In 2018 We allow this barbaric race to continue the green screens went up and are used for both injured horses and jockeys to stop sick people taking pictures on their phones. It allows the vets and doctors privacy to do their job. However the horse was treated and was retired after 4 grand nationals in which one he was 2nd. Should this race now be stopped or made much safer"

"Race horses are one of the best cared for equine sectors ive ever worked with. It is in their blood to race. If they didnt want to do it or didn't enjoy it, they wouldn't carry on when they lost their jockey. And they wouldnt get so excited when they saw that white fencing. " Utter shite

If the horse doesm't have a choice then why do the ones that unseat their rider continue running and jumping? Because they are herd animals and simply follow what the others are doing. Their fight or flight instinct kicks in and see all the others fleeing. "

" Not really - most will simply do as they are trained to do unless their anxiety reaches such a high level that they rebel. Horses are astonishingly willing creatures on the whole, and I do feel the National is a bit of an abuse of that willingness.

"The Grand National is a lot safer now, the horses want for nothing and are very well cared for. Have you heard of the saying “you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink” same with racing, if they don’t want to race, they won’t! Really? Do they still shoot the horses if they break a leg, even though they can recover from it given the right treatment?" Most owners treat their racehorses as a commodity. if they have no potential for racing or stud, they are generally put down, even if the injury is survivable.

What utter crap, you obviously haven’t heard of the ROR and all the other places/charities that take ex racehorses and retrain them for their next career. I’ve retrained 6 ex racers and they are all out there doing well and have good homes, some came with injuries too!

"They are not killed, they are put to sleep. Making generalised sweeping statements, about racehorses being knocked on the head because they have an injury is untrue. I have taken on ex racers that have injuries that stop them from racing anymore, but they can still do low level comps/hacking, the owners wanted the best for their horses and to see them go on and have another career. Obviously if the injury sustained is too bad, then yes they are put to sleep, but this doesn’t just happen with ex racers, it’s happens with all horses/ponies. " You are making a distinction between "killing" and "putting to sleep"? Seriously? You're ending the horses life. What does it matter what you call it. A quick Google shows that whilst there are charities that take in retired race horses, many are killed because there aren't enough organisations willing to take them.
