Re-inventing yourself

Having had several career changes (simply because I was a bit bored and I could change) I think now, looking back that there were some external influences that made me take up for example my second career and training in Mental Health. What influenced you to take a path different from the one you had set out as a youngster?

Nothing as i dont have a career. But my chosen career would be an outreach worker with the homeless or working in some kind of drugs/alcohol reabilitation

I've had a career change. What influenced me was I was bored in my old job. You spend a third of your day at work. There has to be something about it that is challenging otherwise you're hanging around for Friday and wishing your life away

ooo yes we all change as we get older and the way we look at things .. one thing never changed for me as a child i loved horses would cry most nights as my mum and dad would never let me have one ... my dad every sunday sat me on his lap and would go up and down saying that was it ....... i got to 19 end up getting my own horse and now have 5 me and my 2 girls jump and show have working hunters and go all over uk ... so maybe we dont change that much we know in our head what we would like and its just going for it.

Very true, I have changed careers several times though and I am right on the verge of doing it all over again - this time it will be in IT and I m hoping that the challenges will keep me interested for long enough.

I hate my job, but it's keeping the bills paid for the next 18 months or so til I hopefully save enough to move and re-create myself again......never done it on the scale I'm planning, so hoping it works!

Hey that is good and I wish you the best of luck in this project. If you want it, if you can see yourself doing it... you can do it. It really does work believing in yourself!!

I can see it- it just depends on whether other people can or not! I'm lucky enough to have friends in the place I want to move to who will be helping though, so fingers crossed

Key to starting a new career is understanding how things should work so the firm does what it is supposed to do and makes money, and what the language means, the words that's obvious to everyone steeped in an industry but which might be new to you

Having friends on the inside is a great help so you'll be fine

Thanks, but there is no firm.... it'll be me, hopefully starting my own business, the insiders live there already so can hopefully tell people how lovely I am

That is a really good point, to look at the market and what is needed before embarking on potentially expensive training. There are for a few professions where people had hoped to get into and found there was no work at teh end of the training and no matter how much you fancy that job, it would be potentially wwasted time and money.

I have completely changed my career path 3 times. Whilst im training and taking exams im happy. Once im qualified then after a while I get itchy feet for something new.

Its starting to happen to me again, though I will stay within the structure im employed in but Im specialised at the moment and I shall look to move into something new. I guess I am quite ambitious too, its not me staying in the same job / career for a lifetime.

Thats what I meant, I get itchy feet after a few years and feel teh need for a change. It would really worry me to think that I would be doing the same thing for the next 20 years.

I wanted to be a journalist...... And then I discovered LSD, which was......interesting

....anyway...... After being sent away from the "distractions" of an urban environment in my late teens, I ended up bored in Devon (surely not!), I volunteered to work overseas for a while, did bits and pieces, came back to the uk, went to university for my bachelors, went overseas again, came back and did my masters..... And well now I ounce around a bit doing what I can, where I can.

So LSD stopped me being a journalist and led me down a more philanthropic road..... I now dislike journalists overseas, having seen some of the stunts they pull to get their stories...

Oh and drugs are bad, mmmmk?

Have always worked. One word children I chose a career that revolved around them as being a mum is most important thing. Started off helping out playgroup and on committee. From there I got a job and college have worked in children's centre. Same again last few years got involved with school P.T.A and reading buddies really enjoyed being in classroom so I am moving up started back at college I have a placement and training to be a teaching assistant. Hard work and homework but loving the new challenge.

Fist career was a qualified french cuisine chef

Problem was i hated cooking

My uncle used ta be the head chef at a very famous golf club

And i wanted ta emulate him fuck knows why now

Anyway i ended up retraining ta be a gas fitter /plumber and here i am lol xx
