Flying with kids

Our daughter will be 5m old when we take her on her first flight. Has anyone got any tips for flying with kids?

If her ears start bothering her, very gentle wiggle her jaw side to side to relieve the pressure in her ears

I found giving mine a lollipop just before take off helped for the ears. Take some colouring pencils and a book, anything to try and keep her occupied on the flight.

Out daughter was nealry 1 when she first went on a plane and she pretty much just slept on the plane but we also payed for her to have a seat so it was abit easier for us. You going anywhere nice x

Not meeting

Bulk buy ear plugs for other travellers with a little note thanking them for their patience. Sounds daft but will make a huge difference in the attitude of the other travellers!!!

Try to keep baby awake so they sleep as much as possible on the flight.

Be very organised in your packing babies dehydrate on flights very quickly so plenty of water & nappies!! I once ran out of nappies on a flight & spent 3 hours cold & damp!!!

Don’t worry about other passengers ...

If little one decides to cry, then they will cry. Don’t get stressed or embarrassed ... just carry on as you would normally and ignore any abnormal behaviour from others around you.

When my boy was 8mths we went to ibiza and i was holding him in a sling and i gave him his bottle as soon as we got seated,then sang him a song,by the time we started take off he was asleep and didn't wake again till we landed, this happened on the return too.

Last year we went again he was 20mths and he didn't sleep but i bought from charity shops little toys which I hid from him in a bag so everytime he got restless i let him take a toy from the bag and it really helped pass the time.

My wife and I fostered for about 20 years. If it's not associated with me, I don't really register crying/screaming children (except to sympathise with the parent/carer).

But to answer the question, the best way is to try and get flights that fit in with the child's sleep cycle, rather than start in a bad place!

Both of our boys have flown with us since their toddler times, and we’ve had perfect silence on most flights, we’ve been that couple with the kid who screamed the whole flight, and we’ve had the restless child who wanted to walk up and down the aisle, chatting to everyone as he goes. Nobody ever gave us a hard time for having ‘The Screamer’, or being pestered by the cute kid being nosey. YOU will feel like everyone is cursing you if the worst happens, but they won’t be, it’ll just be in your head. If your child doesn’t sleep, just keep them occupied, you’ll be fine

The worst time of my life was flying home from Turkey with baby twins. One screamed for two hours then when he fell asleep the other one screamed for two hours. I still pity the other passengers on that plane.
