there are some lovely areas in yorkshire as well as some god awful ones

i am sure that is true of most counties ?

I guess it depends on your up bringing, and the area you live in. Just been Cornwall for a long weekend and its so chilled out and relaxed, people gave direction and were very happy to help and advise on area's to see... if i lived in a busy city perhaps the attitude might have been different

Was born in Harlow, Essex, mother from Leeds, Father from Sandy (Bedfordshire) moved back up to Leeds when i was 10 years old so accepted as a local, the times i go visit family down in Essex, if i go in a bar always get asked where i am from, until i say well i was born here, the people are totally unfreindly,

Not having a go at Essex or southern folk, just the way it appears to be for me

In the past 30 years I've lived and worked all over the the UK and have seen how differences can exist from region to region.

For instance, I moved from London, to take up a new job in Edinburgh. I arrived a couple of days before Day 1, and my new boss showed me around the area to familiarise me. But within a few minutes, he was calling out, "Where are you rushing off to? You're not in London now, you don't do things at their pace up here, so slow down!"

A few months later, I was temporarily seconded back to London within the company to assist at one of our hotels there; I noticed my Edinburgh pace of life didn't suit London.

I suppose if you have lived in the South of England but have experienced life elsewhere, there are marked differences in the pace of life; there are differences in people, attitudes and so on as well.

Well it isn't just a question of north and south in my opinion, but east and west.Having moved to the West Country from London, I found out that West Country people were very different from Londoners in both good and bad ways.

I also have some recollection that when the M1 was built, Watford Gap Services was the first Service Area built on it, hence a focal point on the Motorway.

It was also referred to on a recent programme, that all the National Express coach services out of London, used to stop at Watford Gap Services as the refreshment stop, reinforcing the fact that anything beyond WG Services was North!

I have to agree...I lived in london for a few years and it is very cold. Although I tried, the only person who spoke to us was the woman over the road on the day we were moving !!

We have moved to a few places since, and the neighbours and shopkeepers etc always chat or at least say hello.

It would appear that Watford Gap is considered to be the unofficial North/South divide because Watford Gap Service Station was the first service station to be built on the M1 and it was at it's original halfway point - ish.

The original M1 started at what is now J5 in 1959. J4 was added in 1966. J1, 2 & 3 were extended down from J4 to Brent Cross in 1977 but were always planned for. (J3 provides access to Scratchwood Services only). The M1 originally terminated at J44 - East Ardsley nr Wakefield, but is now the site of J41.

Taking all that into account the original length of the M1 was 176 miles, so it's half way point was 88 miles (it is 76 miles from Brent Cross to Watford Gap Services and 69 miles from J4 to Watford Gap), not quite half way but it was more of a symbollic dividing point between the North and South of England.

At Watford Gap Services you will now find a sign that marks the North/South Divide and all it has on it are two arrows - one points North and the other South.

oooh... for me.. the further north i got the more friendly it gets...

couldn't get out of romford quick enough for uni...

leicester was nice... but not north enough...

newcastle is fantastic... in fact i am the founder of the "just bloody make it part of scotland" movement...

obviously it is a club of 1 at the moment.. but at the weekends it may well me part of scotland for the amount of scots who come down!!!

There is a difference between people from the south and north. Neither are better or worse but they do have a different approach to things.

Jay and my last long term relationship are both southerners.

Most of the guys i play with are midlands based.

Guys from up north make me laugh.

One guy i met walked in, sat down, kicked his shoes of picked the remote up and switched the football on and said oh you dont mind if we watch the end of the match do you.

I wasnt in the least bit upset or annoyed yet if you had asked me beforehand i would of said id gone doolally if someone did that but it was just the way he had about him

Born, and bred in the north, but lived most of my adult life in London.

Moved to Glasgow, and then back to Royston Vasey, which I never planned to do.

Having lived hither and thither, people are pretty much the same everywhere.

The only difference is that if someone chats to you at a bus stop in the smoke, they are a 'nosey git'. Whereas if the same things happens in the north, it's seen as being 'warm and friendly'.

I think it helps if you're nice yourself.

Dickheads are attracted to other dickheads wherever you travel.

to true you cant get much further south in Europe than where we live now , but I found the Expats living here defo comply to the north south divide stereo type the northernes being far more friendly than the southerners
