Forum members; I reach out to you to survey how many of you have eaten a vesta chow mein, or indeed have heard of one?

It makes no sense that this weird little concoction that I've eaten occasionally over the years, that has stretched across decades, typically after a d*unken night out where the infamous "d*unk man's" omelette hasn't quite made the cut. That has been hidden in little unnoticeable areas in supermarkets that I'm starting to believe only a very small elect are aware of (rule one, don't talk about vesta chow mein club) still goes around unheard of, yet still makes it into the mainstream retail environments!

I don't know if it's embarrassing or a taboo similar to "swinging" or enjoying a bit of "bieber" or comparable boy bands, but I've had enough!

Therefore, I invite the wonderful Fab audience to participate and be proud, like me, that you enjoy the occasional VESTA chow mein. That there's nothing more enjoyable than finishing off the preparation watching your noodles immediately turn crispy, whilst the strange but wonderful aromas hit your nose from the saucepan.

And then finally, you plate up, sit at the table and then shake your soy sauce sachet over the crispy noodles.

I'm proud to enjoy this weird guilty pleasure and today I come out!

I know that after years of being on the shelves, there is a market out there.

So come out and join me!

Maybe an evening of swinging and vesta could be on the cards!

Oohh is that the one that comes with the crispy noodles?!? Loved that...not had one for a very long time tho...remember my dad having the beef curry too...yum! Better than a pot noodle!

Yay! Not just me.

Indeed I make my own curries and Chinese food from scratch.

Yes they are probably not good for you. Loaded with MSG and all other sorts of shite. Probably the stuff from the maccy D adverts which they deny is in their food!

Bad - Yes

Lots of Shite - Yes

But do they taste good? - Oooo YES!

Lol they are indeed. And I don't just mean budget stores.

I've seen them in Asda, Tesco and Morrisons.

Might even pop into Sainsbury, Marks & Sparks and Waitrose to see if they stock!

When i first left home in the 1970's i thought that "doing" myself a Vesta Beef curry, i had arrived as far as culinary skills was concerned lol. They tasted good, they wearn't too big to get one down quickly........................ahhhhhhh fond memories

Haha would love to see this on the menu at the Fat Duck, Purnells or the Oxo Tower. Michelin star vesta! It's got to be a winner!

Vesta prawn curry was the king of meals when I was younger, sadly they stopped making it about 30 years ago

and yes the best thing about the chow mein was the crispy noodles

a quandary, could you change my mind?

Vesta, I'm thinking the last time I had one, I was wearing shorts for school and no I'm not a teacher now, so about 7 or 8. I would like to try the crispy noodles again though.

My friend used to love the beef curry, when we were teenagers.

I never tried any of them, we were a Pot Noodle family.

Pot noodle or boil in the bag Birds Eye curries for me. But I have no issue with those who occasionally embrace a Vesta. I also now have a sense memory and slight craving for a Findus crispy pancake.

Crispy pancakes were a staple for us. I'm surprised we all grew to be adults.

I'm going to make it my mission to contact vesta and campaign for crispy noodles as a solo.

You could have them with just about anything!

By the way, did anyone ever try getting a few of the soft noodles sachet and seeing if they would turn crispy, so you could have more crispy noodles?

Memory is telling me I did once, but was an epic fail.

They were a Saturday tea time treat, I remember the bright orange breadcrumb & the piping hot filling that scolded the roof of my mouth!

Lol yep might be best left there. I did do that with something once, as it wasn't the same. I fear the crispy pancake falls into that category.

So far, only Vesta Chow Mein and Farleys Rusks make the cut for me.

Speaking of Rusks, that reminds me. I remember Gripe Water tasting great, but when they took the alcohol out; it was comparible with Special K.

I prefer the old flavour, though the new one was alright and kinda grew on me.

The crispy noodles are made from "Rice Flour, Wheat Flour, Tapioca, Salt, Vegetable Oil, Turmeric, Maize".

So any reasonable dried noodles would do.

Crispy Noodles

Ingredients

serves 4 - 6

400 g noodles

fat for deep frying

Method

1. Cook the noodles in boiling salted water as directed; drain well.

2. Leave to cool completely.

3. Heat the fat, put some noodles in a wire basket and cook in the fat until crisp and golden-brown.

4. Drain on soft kitchen paper, and keep hot while cooking the rest of the noodles.

I've never eaten one but Vesta curries used to be a Tuesday (for God knows what reason) treat for my dad in the 1970s and I can still remember the pungent smell of them. Can't say I've ever been tempted to try one myself though, and on a similar note have never eaten a Pot Noodle either.

Most of my food nostalgia relates to various defunct chocolate bars and sweets ...

I think they did sell them separately for a while ?
