I am looking at getting a new car and have been swayed by hybrids.

Does anyone have any thoughts or advice on them?

The new tesla looks tastey not hybrid full electric though.

Looks to be reasonably priced too

I had an old shape Auris hybrid

Great on fuel, crap on hills and virtually zero boot space (the battery is at the back)

The newer version has a full size boot but us quite shallow compared to other cars

Higher servicing costs and pretty much main dealer only

"Have you considered the Hammerhead Eagle i-Thrust, as featured on Top Gear? "

My brother is on his 3rd Prius.

Personally, I can't stand them - but mainly because it's a f***ing ugly looking thing.

Personally, I have a 96 Pontiac Firebird.

Yep, I drive a 21 year old gas guzzling yank tank - that just happens to be returning between 32 & 40 mpg.

On part of a journey last night I got my average mpg up to 50mpg!!!!!

I have to say that I have been impressed by what i've seen in terms of performance of cars like the Tesla, but at the moment, the biggest drawback that I can see is range and recharging time.

I wish more development was being done on Hydrogen Fuel cell technology.

That said, I don't like the look of the Tesla - mind you, there's pretty much nothing on the market at the moment that takes my fancy - fussy git, I know.

Now, if someone was to produce a 98-02 shape Pontiac Firebird Trans Am that used Hydrogen Fuel Cells and powered Electric motors, then that would be the puppy for me

Hydrogen is an appalling energy storage/transfer medium though.

Hence why its been ditched in favour of far more efficient battery technology.

I believe they're looking to add sound generators to the newer models of electric vehicles.

Personally i say leave them silent and let natural selection run its course

OP what do you need from a car with regards to driving patterns. The downside of hybrid and or electric the lifespan of the batteries. If you buy second hand then you could be faced with a new battery system soon.

If you are looking at diesel you need to be driving it a reasonable distance every time. If no the newer diesels will clog up the DPF.

My advice would be to highlight what you use your car for and how big ut needs to be. Carry 4/5 people and stuff etc.

Good luck with your choice.

Never had a problem with it in 3 years only other issue was small boot lol

Upkeep issue was that it had to go to main dealers for services as others didn't want to touch hybrids so was a little more expensive but saved loads on fuel as very economical

The robot will be pretty unlikely to run you over given its operating not just visually but with multiple laser raders so jas no blind spot.

If you get ran over by a robot car you're probbaly going to be the one paying for damaging the var :p

You can make hydrogen via a number of means all inefficent, then it needs to be inefficiently transported by road, then stored inefficiently where it will constantly leak, then convert it back to electricity in your car.

Compared to batteries and wires is a no go.

But the typical methos isnt electrolysis like "green" people think you make it from natural gas by stripping the h off the carbons.

So basicaly it's still fossil fuels but you wasted a shit load of energy instead of just using petrol or even lpg

I've got a BMW hybrid. Amazing if you're doing short journeys. BMW claim 25 miles but in reality it's more like 15. Lovely to drive and also extremely rapid too.

If you're always doing long journeys I'd still recommend an economical diesel
