"Hmmm...I wonder if the BBC would pay as much money as they do for broadcast rights if they knew that every race would be raced to empty grandstands around each circuit. I think not. The people who watch F1, whether that is from an armchair or at the circuit, are the lifeblood of that sport. Without them, there are no sponsors, and without those, there is no F1." The people who watch F1 "from an armchair" and the people who watch F1 " at the circuit" are completely different people. I suspct the cost of broadcast rights would increase if nobody was allowed on the circuit for the actual race - practice etc would still still attract low-lifes, hangers-on and similar wannabees - but, if you wanted to see so-and-so die, live!, you'd have to watch it on telly - the price would rocket.

Well, when a football match is compelled to be played behind closed doors there's no shortage of numpties prepared to shell out for 'pay to view' access to the game. Fans buy merchandise and watch the events either live or on TV and without those revenue streams the sponsors would desert the sport in droves. How many people would remain passionate about F1 or football if their only source of information was a listing of the results in the newspaper the morning after?

I know you're not that great at reading what's actually been written and that you just pick out the keywords which, wrongly, as it happens suit your case but nobody, least of all me, is suggesting that the only access to F1 news and results should be several hours after the event. The world is full of Manchester United/ F1 shirt-wearing, merchandise-buying 'fans' who haven't a clue where Old Trafford or Silverstone are located - who don't give a monkeys about crowd numbers in the sure and certain knowledge their few yen a year will never buy them a season ticket to Ibrox - or wherever.

" On the contrary, you mentioned events being played behind closed doors and in the context of what I was discussing, and you were attempting to, was that that scenario couldn't be applied to F1 as it's sponsors would leave the sport. " The world is full of Manchester United/ F1 shirt-wearing, merchandise-buying 'fans' who haven't a clue where Old Trafford or Silverstone are located - who don't give a monkeys about crowd numbers in the sure and certain knowledge their few yen a year will never buy them a season ticket to Ibrox - or wherever. " I've been to Silverstone many times for the F1 weekend. You couldn't possibly have known that so I'll forgive your comments as they were based upon total ignorance and were simply the musings of a frustrated man who had nothing else tangible to say. As for a season ticket to Ibrox, well, that's about as useful as an umbrella in a hurricane as anyone knowledgable about the game will confirm that the Scottish League is nothing more than giving Rangers or Celtic enough points to win it, and with each team playing each other four times it must get pretty dreary trudging along to Ibrox time after time to watch the same old boring procession. Neither Rangers or Celtic would survive in the English Premier League, as demonstrated by their abysmal record in the Champion's League.

" And re Michael Schumacher, yes he's been a great driver but he's also a d***y driver too. Imho, he was lucky to have the right car at the right time, a time when little else was seriously competing with him/them. Go back through the archives and watch whenever Schumacher has had competition, he thinks nothing of running people off the road, and endangering life in the process!! An archetypal arrogant German, or maybe I shouldn't go there!! " Schumacher was different. In contrast to the stars just before him, Prost, Senna Mansell even, who frequently moved to the "best cars", Schumacher joined uncompetitive teams, firstly Bennetton and then Ferrari, (yes Ferrari were uncompetitive ), and then worked with those teams to take them to the very top. Schumacher was no angel but what he did do, and still does, is make it hard for those BEHIND to pass. That is different from Hamilton who currently tries to drive through cars in FRONT of him. From what i saw of Montreal ( and Monaco ) the passes that Schumacher made were clean, competitive and not made under one-sided DRS rules.

He was parked up immediately behind him. I do believe though that the Monaco finale would have been far far better had teams NOT been allowed to change tyres on the reformed grid.

I doubt many, if at all, were on as they drove. There were sadly a number of tragic deaths. With Hamilton's driving "style" he wouldn't have lasted a season back in the good old days.
