Any watch connoisseurs in the house?

I'm turning 25 on the weekend and have been fancying a nice watch. The last watch I had was a buzz light year one when I was 5. So I'm not really up to date with things

What's good and what's to avoid?

Any suggestions appreciated

they have some impressive ,expensive looking watches, dirt cheap but take 3 weeks to arrive from the far east.

Depends on your budget. People have mentioned Hugo Boss watches which a a few pounds and Patek Philippe at tens of thousands of pounds.

Impossible to advise without knowing your budget.

Go for an automatic. Omega have an amazing reputation the speedmaster and seasmaster are very popular models. Sinn are a German brand with some lovely pieces. If you want to spend a little more maybe Rolex, the submariner is a classic. Rado also have some nice pieces too such as the Radio D-star blue dial. There's also Oris and Tudor too (company is owned by Rolex).

Maybe dress up? And mention that you are serious and looking to consider options for a purchase. That should get them engaged.

Rolex and omega etc will set you back thousands. If you are willing to spend thousands that's great but for a decent well styled watch in the 200 to 400 range check out the range of emporio armani watches. I have 3 and always get comments on them

Buy a Rolex Ladies datejust, factory diamond dial with box and papers. Spend £2-3k and it will go up in value every year.

If you're looking for a classic style dress watch, have a look at the Christopher Ward website, reletively new British watch company with a good range of styles (and currently a half price sale if you fancy a bargain). FOr a more modest budget but similar style, check out Marloe watches, British startup using swiss movements- only have one model at present (few styling options), really nice watch for £250

I've had my Seiko Kinetic for 15 years. Still as good as new. I've been scuba diving , rock climbing and even jumped out a aeroplane with it on. ( luckily they gave me a parachute ) and it still looks great. Cost around £200. Money well spent

Depends on how much you want to spend?

I personaly enjoy fine watches and consider a good purchase to be an investment that will increase in value over the coming years.

So to me spending say 5k on the correct watch that will increase in value and be worth double what you bought it for in say 5 to 10 years can only be seen as a sound investment in my opinion.

I bought a Submariner in 2006 bi-metal for £4200 and today to buy the same watch new would cost around £8500.

You wouldnt get thet return with the £4200 sat in a savings account for the same amount of time at recent interest rates.

So for me i have a sound money investment made and also a beautiful watch to wear and enjoy at the same time.

For me thats a no brainer.

I like the submariner but they're expensive! I was generally looking up to £2k....£2.5k at the most. But like I said I'm in no rush to go out and impulse buy.

Another good buy for investment purposes as well as a lovely looking watch for your budget are in my opinion these...

Omega Seamaster and Planet Ocean

Tag Heaur Monaco and Monza

Dont buy new but get a mint used example with full paperwork and boxes and cards etc and ideally with original sales receipt if not bought from a watch specialist or jewellers.

These watches will definitely increase in value from day one if you buy sensibly.

I'd go for a Patek Philippe if your budget stretches to £15k min, otherwise go for a Rolex £5-10k - both will hold their value over time might make a profit if you look after it, expect about £400 pa servicing

Rolex always look cheap to me, seen a fair few genuine ones, seen a fair few knock offs- all look the bloody same. I'd go for the Breitling over the Rolex- bit less Del Boy

The pictures don't do it justice, i was genuinely bouncing up and down opening mine

Comes in beautiful presentaion box, two drawers, one with the watch and and embossed thankyou/authetification card, second drawer contains a lovely soft leather storage pouch. Is almost a shame to have the skelerton side on the back, its so beautifully made.

Debenhams are doing better deals on Seiko (and some other makes) at present. Bought one before xmas, £250 watch- half price....minus some vouchers i had. Buggers have now discounted it to 70% off!

Perhaps have some things in mind before you go looking.

Questions to consider are.

Leather strap or bracelet

Round face or oblong

Do you want lots of twiddling bits or just a tell the time watch

How much is the budget

Brand new or vintage

Going in with thus information makes you sound like you are confidently considering a purchase and not just passing a few hours till the pub opens

In personally like Marc Jacobs skeleton watch - have a mooch on the the watch shop on line & they have all designer watches at at least £100 cheaper than retail prices - mega bargains x

D here -

Everyone is different when it comes to watches. I would look ridiculous if I were to put on a thin leather strapped watch but equally I am uncomfortable wearing something overly bulky like a TW Steel.

I have a number of watches in various styles and brands. I have a watch for everyday use that I have had for over 10 years now, then I have other watches that I only wear on certain occasions.

If you want something for everyday wear have a metal (chrome) strap and something that doesnt have a large face or buttons. Coloured metal will chip and deface easier, fabric straps get very grubby and the rubberised straps are horrible at rubbing at your skin - these are all my opinion any way.

You can't go wrong with an Omega Seamaster.

If you really want to splash the cash and if you can find one, go for the 007 Omega Seamaster, though they only seem to make/release them when a Bond film is out, and even then in limited quantities.

Fine watch though!

Like i said previously you cant go wrong with those choices i mentioned.

Good choice is Seamaster. Try a planet Ocean as they are even nicer im my opinion but obviously everyone has their own taste.

You can't go wrong with a Rolex Submariner, it timeless (excuse the pun) or if you want to push the boat out a bit more a Rolex Day/Date beautiful watch.

I've seen one second hand for half the price of a new one...box and papers.

For a first watch im not massively fussed about investment value.

Having tried a few Rolex on now, I was massively disappointed. The ones in my price range didn't suit me at all, I need something over 40mm and can't drop £4.5k on a Rolex submariner at the moment

I could probably save up for a few months but then I'm not sure I'd want to wear it everyday at that price.

Have a look for a nice vintage watch. I bought a 1960'd Rotary Monza Jo Stiffert watch that immaculate. You can get a lot of watch that's different from everyone else's for a lot less than a new one.

Rolex all the way I have two and Rolex sub no date and a GMT Master 2 (batman) also rolex hold there money well..

Rolex have just done a 10% Price increase so a no date sub has gone from 5k to 5 and a half better then money in the bank lol x

The poster above who mentioned buying pre owned was sensible advice. There's a good auction in the jewellery quarter in brum who have regular watch sales. That can be a good place to buy, remember to factor in fees but if you look in their catalogue at the estimates the lower estimate will also be the reserve price (95% of the time).

Buying new at full retail rarely will represent an investment unless you purchase something rare. I bought a Dubey & Schaldenbrand a good few years ago which has quadrupled in value from my cost to the actual price I could physically sell it for but that is rare. I also did well on a Franck Muller Crazy Hours which I wore for a few years and then sold on at a small profit. However both these watches i bought New at a huge discount off retail through the trade.

Although I own a number of watches including Rolex, for me Patek is and will always be the best both for quality of the timepiece and for investment purposes. I wouldn't rate Tag as a watch to hold its money but if that's the watch you desire then purchase what makes you happy. You might find it's a good 'gateway' watch to start your collection.

I own a Breitling Chrono Avenger, and just last week bought herself a formula 1 Tag.. she wanted the mans size watch..

Simple test... get the jewller to put it on your wrist without looking... then twist your wrist around and look at the watch.... buy the one that makes you go wow and smile instantly... you'll know..

Are you going a quartz watch or an automatic movement...

Either way you get a huge amount of pleasure from a high end timepiece..

The problem is that many confuse having expensive toys as being the same as having character. However beautiful items, creatively sculpted cost money, and what cultured people do is appreciate the craftsmanship rather than the price tag. If you want to know the time OP's Buzz Lightyear watch worked fine but if you want something beautiful ....get a Deadpool digital watch as I have. But seriously you get something that is the display of skill and imagination. Or as one of my best friends says" I want a watch where I know some Swiss person has spent years learning their craft as to how to make and put these beautiful things together. Not some cheap digital mechanism and the cost is the brand name". He wears an Audemars Piguet. But a factor OP should think about is would he be mugged for his watch if he wore it in the street.

Ye's you're right. Michael Kors. Thomas Sabo. DKNY. GUESS.Armani and Boss. All made by Fossie, and a mark up for the designer brand. People in the know wouldn't touch a TAG unless it's a Carrera or Monza. With a shitty stick.

Omega. From 2.5k. Tudor from 2k cash. The best buy for class and reliability is a Longines £650 for a good auto.

I've got 4 watches, Apple Watch which I would not buy again, Burberry which is ok but needs batteries every so often and 2 automatics a Mont Blanc which is "heavy" and sporty looking and great quality but my fav is the Rolex datejust, had it 20years, timeless in style and quality and never loses a second of time, always gets appreciative looks and is worth more now than I paid for it back when I did, great investment and great watch.

I've decided to go with a different make as the aqua terra will probably not hold its value in 20 years time..

So, I went shopping today in various jewellers even looking at second hand and one thing I kept hearing was about 'grey watches'.

I had no idea what the jewellers were talking about but have since done a bit of research and got the jest..

One on-line company said they could get round the warranty issue but it's a lot of money wasted if there's issues!

Has anyone ever bought these grey watches and do you have tips whether to go with them or not?

Sounds like grey imports from the electronics world- genuine goods but purchased from elsewhere in the world at a lower price, so the territorial warranty registered to the serial number isn't transferrable to another location (hence checking things like DSLR cameras have a worldwide warrany, not a regional one).

Back on the subject of watches, off to look at something a little different next week, a Movado Edge- a somewhat unusual design but very eye catching
