"I had this last week....let him waffle on for a good 5 minutes before politely pointing out I don't have a computer at home (ok maybe it wasn't politely and ended up with the words now fu** off)" I nearly always shut cold callers off after about 2 seconds saying 'NO thank you.....' in a very loud voice as I slam the phone down!

"Scam definately I would have led them on saying that you had done exactly what they said while writing it all down just in case. Then say "ohhh sorry I forgot I dont have a computer" " I don't have the patience, I normally just ask them what company they are from and if I am not dealing with that company already I say no thanks and hang up, they irritate me!

"Yeah this is an old scam. I had one once where he asked me the same question about a virus on my computer and I said which one? He just kept going "you know, your computer connected to your broadband connection.." when I responded "yes I understand that but which one; I have three!" Bzzzzz " Yeah, it's usually 'that accident you had' (didn't have one) or 'the PPI you are owed' (checked already!).

"Indian sounding person phones and says they are from BT Openreach and getting reports of virus problems with my computer...they want to dictate something to type into 'run' instead of 'MSConfig' and at that point I bail and say 'No chance, I will find a number for Openreach and call myself...' But can you call BT Openreach on a phone? Can you hell! Stuff it, odds on it was just a scam anyway I think. Votes?" Definitely a scam - I used to get calls telling me my windows set up was wrong (I own macbooks) further more I work in the IT industry. Always found it fun to toy and destroy them on the phone.

They're trying to make you install stuff on your computer that will record your private data (credit card numbers and the like). Microsoft, Openreach, Apple, etc will never call you and ask you to do things with your computer. They cannot look at your computer and tell you that you have a problem. Plus Openreach is a business to business service anyway - they don't interact with the public in any meaningful way.

I do run a business from home but who the hell gets reports of virus's on someone's perfectly - functioning computer anyway.

" They wouldn't even deal with *your* business. As far as I'm aware they literally provide services to ISP's. They're the cable laying arm of BT Internet. My partner would know if I had a virus on my computer - but only because he can remotely log in and check it. Which he does every now and again in case I've fucked things up.

"It's one of the best known and widely publicised scams going....can't believe they are still trying it." Yeah, I think I had it before years ago...can't remember what company they claimed to be then.

"This scam has been going on for years. They play on the odds that the people they call are not computer-savvy and will believe the crap that they are shoveling. There are similar scams online. You may visit a website and get a pop-up telling you that there is a virus on your machine, or some other such crap along the lines of 'programs slowing your computer down', 'adware' etc (that really your virus software should be picking up on) and will send you off to download some piece of software that you a) don't need and b) can't get rid of easily when you realise you've been duped." Yes, I've had to dig my 89 yr old Father out of that hole more than once!

" That's good, then all I need is your bank details, which will be forwarded to my official Nigerian accountant and he will take care of the rest of the transaction for you

"They will direct you to download some software which will have complete access to your computer and it will scan through everything for all websites used and passwords, particularly any online banking details etc etc. It can also access and switch on any web cams you have connected. It will also look like a virus and will appear to completely freeze your computer or some similar effect, which they will then charge you (via a credit card) to remove, they will spend enough time (removing it) to entirel scan through your PC. Dodgy as fuck - there is a Internet fraud line you can call to report, or contact your ISP/phone line provider for further details. I had a very Indian sounding man called Brian Smith call me from Microsoft telling me I had a virus. I kept him on the line hanging for over 40 minutes, I checked every 10 minutes and the silly shit was still hanging on waiting for me to "switch my PC on and get on the Internet". After 40 minutes I told him that I was actually tracking his call and would report him now I had tracked him. His response was "I'll fuck your wife and children" then hung up. " Haha, yeah they never do seem to follow them up. My bank card got hacked once and they bought a timberland jacket online and paid their congestion charge (or tried to anyway!). You'd think with their home address and car registration they'd be sending in the swat teams!!

"I was at my 87 year old Dads last week and answered his phone. This man said we have detected a problem with your computer. I explained my dad didn't have a computer. He said ' oh..do you have a computer?' I said yes, at my own home, so he said ' ah yes...it must be your computer then'! " Haha, ah the criminal mind.....

" This is me too, I love stringing them along! No business will ever call you like this OP - always treat it as a scam and say you will call back. If they called your land line just make sure you have a real dial tone before dialling out, maybe make a test call first to another number before attempting to call whoever supposedly called you.

Yes, I was thinking of stringing her along while she tried to prove to me she really was from BT but I don't have the patience, especially when the English is bad, that irritates the hell out of me anyway!
