Here occasionally, but mostly somewhere else

I'm the worst guitarist on the planet, but I don't care, there's something truly joyous about an open A chord through a slightly distorting amp.

I tend to err on the side of woodwind and keyboard instruments and play pretty much all of them, some of them not too badly. I'm also not bad on a vibraphone or harp since they follow the same principles as a keyboard in what you play, just the method differs. But me and strings don't really get on; I gave up the violin and can only manage a few chords on guitar or ukulele and three or four bass riffs. Percussion wise I'm limited to a basic 4/4 or 6/8 beat on a kit although I have OK cabasa, cowbell, triangle and tambourine skills.

l was most natural with stringed instruments and less so wood wind. Mother plays viola. Pretty musical family. My Scottish side would play old folk songs and sing them in the kitchen. You don't get that anymore. Well, unless l'm in the car with my dad; then we try and vocal harmonies to things like the Everly brothers lol.

That just took away the nasty ear taste residue I encountered earlier hearing a Simon and Garfunkel cover that was great apart from the fact it only had one vocalist, which missed the best bit out entirely as a result.

There are lots of inexpensive analogues that are pretty easy compared to FM and sound great. Wanted an Arturia MiniBrute.

People who can programme the DX series can get amazing unique sounds, which is pretty ironic since it gave us every 80's cliche synth sound.

trying to think of more instruments i can play, got nothing.

Yeah I should really sleep now but napped a lot today last week caught up with me. I played the recorder and xylophone in school that was it. Always been interested in trance and Edm music

why you working again soon or travelling?

get yourself a music maker? i've got a few for the PC, not very good with them but they're still fun.

Don't start till twelve which is good

yeah not bad, even if it is new years. "

I can play the pink oboe. Depending on how well you use your mouth around it, all kinds of noises get made. Most common is 'mmmm mmmmm mmmmmm fuck yessssss'

"Does no one else like Synths? Was going to buy a DX7 but FM is apparently a nightmare to programme. Just about the time you put in.

I do like that but have no idea where to start

There are lots of inexpensive analogues that are pretty easy compared to FM and sound great. Wanted an Arturia MiniBrute.

People who can programme the DX series can get amazing unique sounds, which is pretty ironic since it gave us every 80's cliche synth sound."

.

I can do subtractive synthesis, used to own quite a few hardware synths, now just got a knackered moog rogue and use soft synths.

Spent an hour programming an arturia minibrute in a shop. Brilliant fun, sounds great, and because its one knob/one function its ideal for a beginner.

On the DX7 you have to scroll through loads of menus which just exacerbates the difficulty in programming them. The reason all those sounds on them became cliche is because they were the factory sounds that came with it and no-one knew how to program them so they just all used the built in sounds. Brian Eno used the DX7 to brilliant effect though on his 'Apollo' album, apparently he had 7 of them.

I can play guitar, bass, and melodica too, pretty badly though tbh.

The whole Eno Apollo album has the DX& on it. Masterpiece.

l follow a guy on youtube who has been plugging away on the DX7 for 30 years, and shows how to get more out of it, instead of just using the presets.

The menu diving doesn't put me off the DX range even though the 80's screen is tiny and grainy. l think i'll upgrade it. l think people are put off even learning because it's so different. lt's practically learning all over again.

I did spend a couple of months on a soft synth called FM8, Have you heard of it? Its based on the DX7 but has apparently got a much easier interface. got some good sounds out of it but realised I was hardly going to use it in any songs so I sacked it off.

But yeah, love programming synths, just wish I had more time to do it. I'll be doing it even less now that I'm here!

Yeah I've heard of that one. Is it by Native Instruments, or something like that? I heard it was pretty good. Sounded almost as good as the DX7 but so worth it because it's far easier work with.

I am on a digital trip right now. I like Elektron stuff but it's way too expensive and boutique.. They discontinued their only digital synthetic : the monomachine. So prices are shooting up.
